EP7 Seeing Taiwan: Shangri La Tainan, Anping Tree House/Old St, Fish Noodles, Hop on hop off bus
These are a few of the things we did in Tainan. I'm so gutted because at the end of our stay in Tainan I think I managed to wipe/format my SD card so I lost 2 days worth of clips :(
Of all the towns and cities we visited in Taiwan, Tainan was my favorite. The food, the people, the culture and the hotel were all amazing!
The highlight of our trip was definitely the meal we had at 度小月 Du Hsiao Yueh Restaurant (no.2 below) and the charcoal grilled peanut brittle wrap with coriander (no.7 below).
So whilst they are not all captured on the videos, here is a list of all the places we visited in Tainan:
1. 香格里拉台南遠東國際大飯店 Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Tainan
701, Taiwan, Tainan City, East District, 大學路西段89號
(a beautiful 5* hotel I booked for Chris's birthday)
2. 度小月擔仔麵 Du Hsiao Yueh Restaurant
No. 101號, Zhongzheng Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(check out the eating Taiwan video)
3. 花園夜市 Garden Night Market
No. 533號, Section 3, Hai'an Road, North District, Tainan City, Taiwan 704
(check out the eating Taiwan video)
4. 安平樹屋 Anping Tree House
708, Taiwan, Tainan City, Anping District
(a warehouse which has been reclaimed by nature)
5. 安平老街 Anping Old Street

(an old shopping street selling traditional foods and bits)
6. 赤崁樓 Chihkan Tower
No. 212, Section 2, Minzu Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(an old tower build by the Japanese)
7. 土豆伯府城花生糖 Charcoal Grilled Peanut Brittle Roll
No. 200號, Section 2, Yongfu Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(delicious old school Taiwanese snack where the peanut brittle is heated on a charcoal fire then passed through rollers to be flattened then wrapped around fresh coriander; so good eaten warm)
8. 阿江炒鱔魚 A Jiang Stir-Fried Eel Yi Noodles
No. 89, Section 3, Minzu Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(only 2 things on the menu, wet or dry stir fried smoked eel noodles)
9. 神農街 Shennong Street
Shennong Street, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(really pretty old street with a Japanese vibe; aka Osaka of Taiwan)
10. 泰成水果店 Fruit Ice Shop
No. 80號, Zhengxing Street, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(frozen fruit smoothie ice blocks served on half a honeydew/cantaloupe melon... bit over hyped)
11. 蜷尾家甘味處散步甜食 Soft serve ice cream
No. 92號, Zhengxing Street, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(famous ice cream chain, popular flavours sell out early. I tried the Taiwanese tea soft serve and it had really good flavour)
12. 台南雙層巴士 Tainan Sightseeing Bus
701, Taiwan, Tainan City, East District
(Tickets can be bought from the first stop outside Tainan main train station. We got promo tickets for TW$300 = £7.50 for the full day which are usually TW$500 = £12.50. They offer 3 routes which go to the main tourist spots but live commentary is only in Chinese and the English is using the pre-recorded audio headphones)
13. 大東夜市 Ta-Tung/Dadong Night Market
No. 276號, Section 1, Linsen Road, East District, Tainan City, Taiwan 701
(pretty much the same vendors as the Garden Night Market because they operate on alternate days though still worth it to get your night market food fix)
14. 夏家手工魚麵 Fish Noodles
No. 353號, Section 1, Fuqian Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(run by two ladies rushed off their feet; with queues out front. Super cheat eats, really good food. Noodles have a unique chew to them because of the fish meat)

WHO ARE WE?
We are a small publishing company (Vision) based in Taipei. We produce an English magazine (Travel in Taiwan) introducing you to Taiwan as a travel destination. Read it! Lot of useful information. We also have a website with lots of articles about Taiwan. Visit it! We try to make a video or two every week. Let us know what you think about this channel and what you would like to see about Taiwan. All the best to you!
From Travel in Taiwan magazine 2018-5-6:
Tainan Judicial Museum
The Tainan Judicial Museum (No. 307, Sec. 1, Fuqian Rd., West Central Dist.; judicial.gov.tw/museum/; Chinese) complex, inaugurated as the Taiwan District Court in 1914, is considered one of Taiwan’s three supreme Japanese-era works of architecture.
Blueprint Culture and Creative Park
This is a narrow-lane complex of renovated simple, cement-walled dormitories originally built by the Japanese to house judicial-authority employees. The dorm buildings are today home to an attractive cluster of artisanal outlets and creative eateries.
Little Secret
The “hidden-away” Little Secret (No. 17, Ln. 689, Sec. 1, Ximen Rd., South Dist.; facebook.com/littlesecret17) restaurant is the go-to foodie haunt here. The emphasis is on bringing cultural-creative flourishes to familiar Taiwanese noodle classics, each dish celebrating a regional icon ingredient.
Old Taiwan Magistrate Residence
The Old Taiwan Magistrate Residence (No. 1, Weimin Street, East Dist.; otmr.com.tw), built in 1900, was used as a residence by visiting Japanese royals, most notably the future Emperor Hirohito during his 1923 grand Taiwan inspection.
The Place Tainan
This new boutique hotel is situated at one end of a monstrous block-style retail/entertainment/leisure complex. The contemporary-décor hotel has minimalist-theme guestrooms with strong black and white schemes. hotelroyal.com.tw/tainan
Lin Mo-Niang Park
Overlooking the south side of Anping Harbor is a giant 16m-high hilltop statue of Lin Mo-Niang located in the breezy Lin Mo-Niang Park. Lin was the young mortal maiden who became the immortal Mazu, Goddess of the Sea, protector of seafarers.
Eternal Golden Castle
This “castle,” actually a fort (No. 3, Guangzhou Rd., Anping Dist.), was built by the Chinese in the 1870s as protection against grasping colonial powers. Massive bastions are found at the ends of the four high, thick walls, with a moat making enemy access even more difficult.
Taijiang National Park Visitor Center
Taijiang National Park (tjnp.gov.tw) is a watery world of estuaries, sandbars, tidal flats, old irrigation canals and small-craft shipping channels, mangrove swamps, wetlands, and aquaculture farms. The white-walled buildings of the visitor complex, built on stilts above retired fish farms, resemble traditional fishermen dwellings and circle a faux “lagoon.”
Anping Fort
This stronghold, originally called Fort Zeelandia, was built at the north-end head of a great sometimes sandbar/sometimes silt island (at high tide) that jutted out from the mainland.
Anping Tree House
Old Tait & Company Merchant House (No. 108, Gubao St., Anping Dist.) and, directly behind, the Anping Tree House, were both built by a British trading firm after the Second Opium War forced China to open ports to Western trade in 1858. The treehouse, originally conjoined warehouses, has been completely overrun by massive banyan trees, creating a fairytale maze.
Chou’s Shrimp Rolls
This restaurant (No. 125 Anping Street, Anping Dist.) is one of the best restaurants in Anping serving shrimp rolls, a local the delicacy.
Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields
Just south of the fishing village of Beimen are the Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields, Taiwan’s oldest salt fields, created in 1818. This site is a showcase example of how the bottom of evaporation ponds were paved with pottery shards, producing cleaner salt and making harvesting easier.

Opportunities for learning as Muslim population of Taiwan grows
Last Sunday we were introduced to Nouf, a travel blogger who led a group from the Middle East around Taiwan. Some businesses here are starting to cater to Muslim consumers, who may be locals, immigrants, or visitors. But many in Taiwan still see Islamic cultures as mysterious and unfamiliar. Tonight we''ll look inside the daily lives of Muslims in Taiwan, and explore how these different cultures can be bridged. Here''s part two of our Sunday special report.Chen Kai-ticomes from Indonesia. She’s making one of her homeland’s classic family dishes, telurbalado, or eggs with chilli sauce. After some efforts in the kitchen, an array of tempting dishes appear on the table – but none contain pork, because all Kai-ti’s family, including her Taiwanese husband and children, believe in Islam.Chen Chia-yaoHusband of Chen Kai-tiI used to be Taoist. Because of meeting my wife, I converted to Islam.Chen Kai-tiIndonesian immigrantMuslims have to marry someone of the same faith.Kai-ti’s husband acknowledges that at first it was not easy to convert from Taoism to Islam. But now, like every other practising Muslim, he prays on the allotted hour every day, five times a day.Chen Chia-yaoHusband of Chen Kai-tiIn Taiwan, you could say there exists a kind of veil of mystery over Islam. We didn’t know it well enough. It was only because I met my wife, and then joined Islam, and started going to the mosque, that I gradually got to understand their Islamic laws. The main religions of Taiwan are Taoism and Buddhism. So although there are now 260,000 Indonesians living in Taiwan, mostly either students, workers, or spouses of Taiwanese citizens, most Taiwanese people have quite a limited idea about Indonesian culture and religion. But from a business standpoint, it would be foolish to ignore the chance to cater to the 1.6 billion Muslims in the world.Ma Hsiao-chiFormer imam of Taipei Grand MosqueThe government wants to pursue its New Southbound Policy. In Southeast Asia, the vast majority, more than two- out of five-hundred-million people are Muslim. If you want to do business with them, or even befriend them, on every level, in every industry, you will come across Islamic culture. This biotechnology firm based in Hsinchuset its sights on the Muslim market in 2017. It has already established a presence in Malaysia and Indonesia, which has helped its overall performance grow by somewhere between 5% and 10%. Their success in cornering the market is thanks to the great effort they put into understanding Muslim consumers.Richard TuBiotech firm executiveLots of collagen or extract of animal placenta may come from pigs, for example, it might be collagen extracted from pig skin. So because followers of Islam are not so keen on that, we can’t use it, we can’t use any of the ingredients made from pigs. But as Taiwan is not a Muslim country, it takes more than just a ‘Halal’ label to get a good enough grasp of Islamic culture to corner the market. This is Taipei Grand Mosque. Every Friday Muslims come here for a weekly congregational prayer.Ma Hsiao-chiFormer imam of Taipei Grand MosqueFriday is the day we gather to pray together. It’s called “Jumu''ah”. Jumu''ah is the greatest favor given by Allah, the most graced day in the whole week. In Islamic countries, Friday is the day of rest: if you want to travel or even do business, you might have to watch out, you might not be able to find anybody on Friday, because they take Fridays off.Muslims must perform a ritual purification before prayer – and there’s quite an art to it. You wash various body parts considered unclean, such as the soles of the feet, and you should only touch your body with your left hand, not your right.Ma Hsiao-chiFormer imam of Taipei Grand MosqueThere are also rules about the left and right hands. When you take someone’s hand, or a business card, use your right hand. You don’t need your left hand for picking things up, giving gifts, handing over business cards, or eating.Islamic cultures have very specific rules of etiquette, which if not properly understood, can make it easy to cause offense, or even trigger conflict.Ma Hsiao-chiFormer imam of Taipei Grand MosqueYou can use the Western logic, and say “You Muslims are backward, don’t come in, you’re scary”. Then you make it very hard to do business in this area, you’ve closed that door. With the growing numbers of overseas students and migrant workers, not to mention international marriages, in Taiwan, there are more and more people wearing headscarves on the streets. Only with mutual understanding can people from different backgrounds cultivate mutual respect. In December, a Halal market was held in Daan Forest Park in Taipei, attracting many to try a taste of Islamic culture.HouTsung-yuMember of the publicI think – to be honest I really don’t understand Islam, even though I took some classes on Arabic culture. But really in our d...

Summer Vacation 2019 Part 2: Taijiang National Park (台江國家公園), Tainan City
To satisfy demands for business management, tourism, and conservation research, Taijiang National Park provides comprehensive and innovative services for both tourism and sustainability.
By choosing the area between the north Shi-Tsao Avenue and the Brine Grass Creek as the site for the administrative and service center in the future, the local environment reflects the Taijiang National park's ecological and cultural histories, with multidimensional qualities of various industries. Taijiang Campus is also a candidate of EEWH Diamond grade, the green building certification system in Taiwan which combines the sustainable environment and green technology as a new impression of Tainan.
Taiwan - A Pure Land 佛光山
Buddhist culture is very present all around Taiwan. On this little island, you will find an infinity of temples; Big or smalls, crowded or empty, there is always a special atmosphere in the air. Peace, calm and respect are the 3 words that best describe these places to me. A spiritual presence carries you away, taking over your mind and allowing you to find yourself and be at peace with your own person.
The Buddha Memorial centre in Kaoshiung is probably the most incredible religious spot I have visited in my entire life. In this place, you can find the biggest Buddha in Taiwan and a lot of different temples. This place is called Fo Guang Shan, which means “Moutain of Buddha’s light”. This video is a short visit of this magical place that I will never forget.
Kodamas are always here to help us find our ways.

My First Day In Taipei, Taiwan!
Hey, guys! I'm super excited to finally announce my arrival in Taiwan! I'm staying in the Da'an district, and I love every bit of it so far (besides the fricking jet lag). In this vlog, I get a new SIM card for my phone, tour my temporary apartment, check out street food and the night culture, and tons more! This long journey I'm taking wouldn't be possible without the 9 month Huayu Enrichment Scholarship that I was thankfully awarded this year. Past the point of receiving the scholarship's stipends, I plan on getting a job to further sustain my stay out here. Now, the energy levels are a bit lacking from my part at first, but it's simply because of the jet lag. I'll be back to my normal self very soon! I hope you guys stick around for this new chapter on Harry Hour, and I'll see you in the next vid!!!

***********************************************************************
We start with one of our favourite noodles soups in the world TAIWANESE BEEF NOODLE SOUP at Liu Shandong which received Bib Gourmand recognition from Michelin this year. The eatery is really popular with the locals and we can see why! The noodles are bouncy and thick and the beef is melt in your mouth. The beef broth is clean tasting and has a rich beef flavour. An array of condiments are on the tables in which to adjust your noodle soup to your own taste. We add fermented black beans, pickled mustard greens and some chilli oil to ramp up the flavours and spice. Highly recommended!
We move on to our next snacks- GUA BAO and BUBBLE MILK TEA. Both stalls are extremely popular and are within a couple of metres of each other. The gua bao is a steamed pork belly bun- at Lan Jia it is made up of half fatty pork and half lean pork. Stuffed into a fluffy steamed bun together with crushed peanuts, sugar and pickled mustard greens, this is one of the best gua bao we’ve ever eaten. Chen San Ding’s bubble milk tea is the best thing to wash down the gua bao. Contrary to its name, this stall’s version doesn’t contain tea but is made up of fresh milk and warm tapioca boba that are cooked in thick, sweet brown sugar syrup. It’s sweet, fun to eat/drink and very rich. Both stalls are well worth a visit!
Our next snack is one of our favourite to eat when in Taiwan- stinky tofu! It gets a bad reputation what with its stink but its smell is far worse than its taste! We eat deep fried stinky tofu stuffed with chilli and soy sauce with pickled cabbage on the side. It’s an amazing snack and the stinky tofu has a beautiful flavour.
We finish with one of Taiwan’s most beloved dishes- lu rou fan. Available at almost every eatery, braised pork on rice is addictive! Jin Feng is a lu rou fan powerhouse- white rice topped with a ladle of braised pork bits and fatty soy sauce. This is one delicious bowl you have got to eat when in Taipei!
Where and what we ate:
Beef noodle soup at Liu Shandong, No. 2, Lane 14, Section 1, Kaifeng St, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100. Open 8:00am to 8:00pm. Closed Sunday.

Forests, Flowers, and Waterfalls
Text: Rick Charette
Sun-Link-Sea
A “forest and nature resort,” a privately operated getaway idyll (NT$250 entry fee).
At the upper end of the resort road is at Songlong Rock Waterfall. At the base of a Cinemascope-wide semi-circular cliff is a large, deep green lagoon busy with fish in the water and eye-catching birds above. Two massive mid-lagoon boulders are covered completely with vegetation, trees “impossibly” growing atop their solid-rock bed. The cliff’s base is “gone,” to a height of 30 meters and a depth of 30, a cave now where once soft sandstone was emplaced. A paved pathway takes you along the cliff base and through the gaping hole, and you emerge directly before the waterfall itself, at its base.

Between Sun-Link-Sea and Xitou – Wangyou Forest
Beside County Road 95, a few kilometers from Sun-Link-Sea, you’ll see a large “Wangyou Forest” sign From there, a narrow road leaps up past tea fields, tilted at startling angles. Take the 15-minute huff-and-puff walk up to the forest-entrance path (NT$50 entry), or use one of the privately-operated shuttle vans (NT$200 return). Wangyou Forest is a section of tall-pine forest drowned when the creek that gurgles through was blocked by Taiwan’s infamous 921 Earthquake in 1999.
Le Midi Hotel Chitou
This is a veritable high-mountain hideaway oasis of regal splendor amidst a world of tall trees and rugged mountains. The owners are avid hunters of European-nobility antiques, and eager to show them off. In the lobby and other areas you are regaled with imperial-French furniture, clocks, and other curios collected on hunting forays in Europe. The guestrooms are all spacious and tastefully appointed in modernistic continental European style, with bright nature-evocative green, white, and brown tones predominant. Room rates start at NT$11,000; one dinner and breakfast included

Xiaobantian Bridge
Opened in 2014, this is mountainous Nantou County’s highest extradosed bridge, its roadbed 60 meters up from the valley floor. Its soaring grey towers are shaped like giant bamboo stalks, just like Taipei’s famed Taipei 101 tower. Xiaobantian is home to numerous fetching waterfalls, Dexing Waterfall perhaps the best-known. On the higher reaches of a boulder-strewn Beishi River tributary stream, it has two sections, the upper, 30m high, has carved a cool, calm pool at its base perfect for wading.
Sky Ladder Scenic Area (NT$50 adults)
A well-maintained trail brings you down, down, relentlessly down to the bottom of Taiji Gorge. Moving through thick bamboo forest, among your gorge-bottom rewards will be the Sky Ladder – a suspension-bridge engineering marvel – a sheer-cliff cave-dwelling Earth God temple below it, and Qinglong Waterfall.
BeYoung Garden
On the second floor of a still-operating small inter-town bus station that looks like a set for a 1950s period movie. “Zhushan” literally means “Bamboo Mountain”; the area is renowned for bamboo cultivation and products, bamboo is a key restaurant decorative material, and the chefs make edible bamboo a prominent ingredient. Specially recommended: the “three-cups mushroom bitter-tea range chicken” and “dried bamboo with soy-braised pork” set meals.

City Zoo - Animal Pop Family in Taiwan
Introduction:
A hybrid dance of nature and city
Jecko Siompo × New Visions New Voices Theatre Company
City Zoo is a socially engaged art project that Siompo has been developing for
more than ten years. Siompo blends elements that represent urban culture
such as hip-hop and modern dance into the dance movements inspired by the
Jayapura and Wamena aboriginal traditions in eastern Papua and the
imitation of wild animals. As a result, he has developed a unique body
language that has never seen before. Siompo has been invited to the
workshops and to perform in many countries, including Japan, Australia,
Netherlands and Germany. Workshop participants enjoy the movement of
dance while reflecting upon the difference and co-existence between nature
and city as well as between the humans and the animals.
For the Tainan edition of “City Zoo- Animal pop family in Taiwan”, Siompo
works with professional dancers and the children, teenagers and young
dancers in Tainan with New Visions New Voices Theatre Company. New

STORYLINE
Final preparations are underway in China and across Asia for the lunar New Year which begins on Saturday.
Workers in Beijing hung decorations and set up booths ahead of the temple fairs which open for business on New Year's eve, while Taiwanese shoppers packed crowded markets stocking up on everything from sausages to fake flowers and toy mascots.
This year will be the Year of the Snake - or also known as the little dragon - and many hope that it will bring good fortune traditionally associated with the full-size fire-breather which in Chinese mythology is linked to all-powerful leaders of the imperial past.
In China, millions of city dwellers and tourists are expected to rush into dozens of temple fairs in the city for shopping, eating and enjoying national cultural performances.
I hope people will be very happy during the new year so that we can make money, said Gaming booth vendor Li Jibe.
This is our primary purpose to be here but of course we are happy to make people feel entertained, he added.
In Taipei, one shop owner described her hopes for the coming year.
The Year of Snake will be a prosperous year, we call it a little dragon year. So I wish Taiwan's economy can be a little bit better, Liu Wen-jiu said.
But in Chinese mythology the snake also has a destructive power.

US Politician Talks Name of Taiwan
In a provocative speech in New York yesterday, Stephen Yates, the Idaho Republican Party chairman, suggested that, faced with repeated diplomatic intimidation by China, Taiwan could declare itself the Republic of Taiwan. The New Power Party and World United Formosans for Independence have commented in response that amending the Referendum Act is a more realistic measure, following which, a referendum might provide a legitimate basis for a name change. In a speech at the Taiwan Center in New York yesterday, Stephen Yates, former Deputy National Security Advisor to the former US Vice President Dick Cheney, addressed China’s recent diplomatic challenges to Taiwan, and offered his encouragement to the island.Stephen YatesUS Republican PartyIt’s very, very frustrating to lose a diplomatic relationship. I personally don’t think that the people of Taiwan should be too sad. First, the value of Taiwan is its people, and no one can take that away from them, no matter who recognizes them in the international community.Yates also suggested that if China intends to cut off Taiwan’s diplomatic relationships, Taiwan should declare itself to be the Republic of Taiwan, pursuing independence in resistance to China.Chen Chong-guangWorld United Formosans for IndependenceThe most feasible way would be through the Referendum Act at first, to gauge public opinion with a referendum.Huang Kuo-changNPP LegislatorI believe there are aspects to Mr. Yates’ proposal that are worth referring to. But the position of the New Power Party has always been that we must pass the amendment to the Referendum Act as soon as possible, and we must initiate the constitutional reform Taiwan needs as soon as possible.Passing the amendment to the Referendum Act is the most urgent priority of the NPP and World United Formosans for Independence. They believe it will allow the Taiwanese people to vote for the future of Taiwan, leading to constitutional reforms, perhaps including changes to the official name of Taiwan, and eventually bringing about a normalization of the status of the nation in the world.
