Taiwan Hot Spring | Guanziling Hot Spring
This weekend I took an offer from a friend of mine to join him at one of the most famous hot springs in Taiwan. Guanziling Hot Spring is an amazing place to visit that is located an hour north of Chiayi City in southern Taiwan. I couldn't of been more relaxed with all the amazing mud hot springs and delicious local food there. If you want to get away for a relaxing weekend, Guanziling Hot Spring is the place to go! My skin has never been so moisturized!

Tainan’s Lai and New Taipei’s Chu reaching out beyond their districts
While Ko and Lien are holding out hope in Taipei, two candidates who feel they have a strong grip on their election bids are the incumbents of New Taipei and Tainan, Eric Chu and William Lai. Throughout the election process, both Chu and Lai have found time to stump for hopefuls in other cities. It has led to speculation that these rising politicians could have their sights set on the presidency in 2016. Ahead of the Nov. 29 elections, Tainan Mayor William Lai is not only campaigning for himself but also traveling around the island to stump for other party candidates.Lai not only took to the campaign trail to support candidates in central Taiwan but also traveled north to Taoyuan. In fact, Lai has been crisscrossing much of Taiwan, showing that he’s become a star politician within his party. As for the pan-blue camp, the politician most in demand is none other than Eric Chu. Here we see him stumping for votes in many different election districts, always drawing a large crowd. These two popular mayors are traveling north and south to help their respective camps. In one sense, they have become the most-watched politicians within their party.Cheng Jin-lanPolitical CommentatorThis allows everyone to see their political power. While campaigning, they are building alliances and raising their stature from municipal leaders to national-level politicians. This will help them and is necessary if they want to participate in national elections, such as running for president. Many speculate that these two popular mayors aren’t just running for office in 2014. Their high-profile campaign stops in support of other candidates could be a strategy for positioning themselves for a presidential run in 2016.

20130918; Enderlin, ND
This last-minute and thus poorly planned segment of our 6,300 mile cross-country trip was included as a genealogical exploratory visit to my grandmother Dora Etta Hutchinson Smith's hometown of Enderlin, ND. She was born in Enderlin in 1896 while her father, James Hutchinson, was working there for the SOO Line Railroad.
The James Hutchinson family resided in Enderlin until sometime before 1910 when the family moved to Finley, Washington. Dora, a brother, and a sister returned to Enderlin around January of 1913 after their mother passed away. They resided with their grandmother, Marietta Ginger Hutchinson Mattison, who had been operating a boarding house on 6th Avenue in Enderlin, renting rooms mostly to SOO Line railroad employees.
Dora moved to Michigan in 1914 after marrying George T. Smith (Sr.), a SOO Line employee. Dora's uncle Mort Hutchinson, who had moved to Enderlin around 1906, also worked for the SOO Line railroad until around 1910 when he moved to Washington State as well. Marietta, also known around town as Grandma Mattison, passed away in 1929.
We found an RV campsite in Casselton, ND, operated by the Days Inn hotel chain. This was the closest campsite we could find near Enderlin. We headed to Casselton from New Lisbon, WI after spending the night there having left Washington Island, WI the day before.
Enderlin resides in the heart of flatland North Dakota farm country as you will see as we travel from Casselton to Enderlin. From Casselton, ND we drove south on Hwy 18, then a bit west again on Hwy 18/46 eventually arriving in Enderlin a little over an hour later. I found it a bit disconcerting that unlike here in Lakewood, CO...where we can tell direction by looking for the presence of the Rocky Mountains which designates west, there were no mountains with which to guide us on our way. Grateful for GPS!
Early in Enderlin's history the town became a major hub for the SOO Line Railroad, complete with a roundhouse and major steam locomotive maintenance sheds serving the SOO Line Railroad's steam locomotives. Enderlin was a bustling railroad town in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Enderlin also was...and still is...a community providing grain and other crops for the country from the area's hard working farmers. The SOO Line Railroad provided the means to bring the crops to market. Today the SOO Line Railroad is no longer. Its assets have been purchased and since replaced by the Canadian Pacific Railroad which now carries on the work of its once famous predecessor, the SOO Line Railroad. The roundhouse and maintenance sheds are gone...diesel locomotives don't require near the maintenance as did the early steam locomotives. Vestiges of the SOO railroad's peak presence can still be seen by visiting Enderlin's Historical Society & Museum which houses many objects from that period. The railroad continues to play a major role in Enderlin's commerce.
Included in this video are just a few photos taken during our visit to the Enderlin Historical Society & Museum, along with a few family photos of our relatives who lived in Enderlin back in the day. We owe a special thanks to Ms. Susan Schlecht who drove into town from her home just to open the museum for us during our short stay in Enderlin. We were stuck with having only that day to visit, and Susan graciously accommodated us by opening the museum for us on that day and provided us with an excellent guided tour of the museum's contents! There's so much more to see in their museum...a few hours simply didn't do the visit justice!
We also included a few photos taken around town during our visit. Not being familiar with the community, I can see as an afterthought I should have taken additional photos to include for example the town library and school. Enderlin is a small farm community, the future of which could go either way...either by experiencing sustained growth, or by slowly diminishing into a community shy of the many businesses and commerce required to support a town. Time will tell. In any case, the folks of Enderlin are wonderful! They maintain the Dakota pioneer spirit and know well all about hard work and survival as is the case with most Dakotans I've known over the years. It's a hardy folk that can endure the harsh winters of the Dakota plains!
For additional information regarding the Enderlin Historical Society & Museum, please visit:
To download and read at no cost the interesting history of the pioneer town of Enderlin, check their 1966 Enderlin Jubilee book, which we had the pleasure of scanning from an original book and converting into a searchable PDF file and subsequently donating the results to the museum for your reading pleasure:

Taiwan: Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch (臺北市立圖書館北投支所) 2012-12-29Sat1033hrs
Taipei reveals a complicated, chaotic mix of architectural features and styles
Since coming to office, Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je has been a proponent of bringing a new “urban aesthetic” to Taiwan’s capital. His biggest effort along those lines was the demolition of Zhongxiao Bridge over the Lunar New Year holiday. Tearing down the bridge made city’s old North Gate more visible, but the new space created has made the large billboards and signage on buildings in the area even more obvious. Is it too late to save anything of Taipei’s old charm? The red brick-colored Cheng-En Gate, also known as the North Gate, was first built in 1884 during the Qing dynasty. To the left of the North Gate is the Taipei Post Office, a prominent example of Japanese colonial-era architecture, and to the right is a contemporary office building. The one location offers architecture from three distinct periods in Taipei’s history.Lin Hui-chengTNUA Professor of ArchitectureOne of the more common forms found in Chinese-style architecture from the Qing Dynasty is a building which is very square and balanced in its design. During the period of Japanese rule in Taiwan, the most common type of buildings were those done in a native Japanese style, and the second-most popular type were those built in a special style which combined Japanese elements with contemporary architectural influences from Europe and the US. That’s why a lot of buildings from this period seem to take their main inspiration from Western forms and trends. When the KMT arrived in Taiwan after the end of World War II, there was little long-term planning done to coordinate the development of Taiwanese cities. Even today, Taipei’s skyline is growing more chaotic as high rises and skyscrapers continue to be built. The lack of any thoroughgoing plan for development in the nation’s urban areas sometimes means that the buildings on one given street, or even the apartments in one building, are designed according to different architectural styles. Agua Chou, a local designer who lived in France for four years, sees big differences in the French and Taiwanese approaches. Agua ChouDesignerParis invests so much more in itself than Taiwanese cities do in themselves. Urban investment in Paris expresses a uniform approach, while investment in Taiwan is made by individuals for themselves, so there’s not as much of a collective consciousness. You can get an idea of the extent to which Paris has invested in its urban aesthetics just by looking at a cleaning truck on one of the city’s streets.Agua ChouDesignerDuring my first trip to Paris, I couldn’t help but notice that the uniforms and tools of the city’s cleaning crews together made up a gradient pattern of shades of green. I think that you can discern a country’s approach to governance in such details. In the case of Taipei, aside from the various historical factors that contributed to a hodgepodge of urban forms, municipal authorities may bear part of the blame for the city’s “ugly” face.Monica KuoChinese Culture University ProfessorOur public servants are all very talented, and I believe that they also probably have very high IQs, but when it comes to the aspect of beauty I think they are seriously lacking. It’s a problem that isn’t taken seriously by anyone in government, including those at the very top, and that’s a big problem for all of us. The seeming ignorance of government officials when it comes to the notion of beauty has unfortunately extended to the construction of urban infrastructure. After such a long period of aesthetic neglect, the residents of the nation’s cities may be starting to lose their appreciation of that elusive quality.Monica KuoChinese Culture University ProfessorWhen the financial situation of the average person improves, they’re likely to want to take care of themselves first and foremost, and not to spend their money on things that others might be able to appreciate from the outside. I think that this marks the disappearance of a certain set of public values. Now, we don’t think it’s embarrassing if the exterior of our apartment or building is run-down or damaged, but in foreign countries, if you don’t take proper care of my yard or windowsill it’s considered a big embarrassment. Without much in the way of planning and supervision, Taipei turned into the city it is today, its streets and alleys peppered indiscriminately with barred windows, power lines, shop signs and electrical transformers. Some attempts have been made to address these four major eyesores, with varying results.Residents of Taipei are all familiar with the landscape paintings on the outside of the city’s many transformer boxes. The paintings were once seen as a way of “greening” the city’s streets, but in the eyes of Agua Chou, they represent a big source of dissonance.Agua ChouDesignerThese landscape paintings appear totally out of place on the street, and they create a chaotic setting in which lots of people become used...
Xuanxi North Competition
Design for Construction of Sites in Xuanxi North, An International Conceptual Design Competition.
Organization: Beijing Yanguang Real Estate Co., Ltd
Result: shortlisted
Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China and one of the most populous cities in the world. The Xuanxi North project is located in central Beijing, within the second ring-road. Part of the Beijing Historic Character Harmonisation Area, Xuanxi North was a popular residence of writers, historians and scholars for more than 600 years during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It also includes the former residences of high-profile reformer Shen Jiaben and of the poet, calligrapher and intellectual activist Gong Zizhen. This place is a kind of storehouse of history and traditions, traces of the past, lost in the mists of time, crossing civilizations and cultures, united in peace and wise coexistence.
The general idea that this art-space will be a sort of educational&entertaining district, where every citizen and tourist find their understanding of the historical and cultural identity. Proposed “art-incubator” becomes a mental intangible door to our past and a place of collective memory. All of these features will help in the development of the China self-identity.
Reconstruction of scholars atmosphere - the basic principle of the block organization. Proposed architectural strategy creates minimal impact on the architectural and visual perception of the place and fully integrates into the existing Beijing structure, takes advantage of accessibility from different part of the city, refers to the past architecture traditions.
Concept of the district development is both high performance and low cost, as it works with existing local resources and improve the current situation.
Art incubator is an intention to create a new, full of life center of culture, history, communication and exchange of ideas. The main leitmotif of the project proposal - an attempt to create an objects not as a physical buildings, but rather a new space of collective memory and identity, a meeting place for people and stories, the system of open spaces, where the spectacular environment integrates with the rich cultural activities.

I started my Taiwan adventure in Taipei, often called the food capital of Asia for its wide assortment of cuisines and unique themed restaurants including the prawn fishing restaurant where you'll be able to capture your own dinner but also the toilet restaurant where you can eat beef curry out of a toilet bowl.
The best way to start your Taipei adventure is with an epic Taiwanese breakfast at Fu Hang Soy Milk, the most popular joint in town but do come early, lineups can grow very large. I ordered the deep-fried bread stick, egg pancake and a delicious cold soy milk soup. There is a good reason why locals wait hours in line to get this stuff.
One of the most incredible experiences in Taipei was getting a knife massage by knife massage practitioners who require to be vegetarian and meditate daily but don't worry the cleavers used are blunt, it is quite satisfying getting hammered by blunt metal to a point where I fell asleep from relaxation.
For ancient temples in Taipei, visit the breathtaking Longshan temple, also known as 'the meeting place of the gods' were you can witness daily rituals, offerings and many locals praying to the many deities.
One of the strangest foods I tried were the fermented duck eggs which were traditionally made by a mixture of lime, salt and ash turning the egg white base into a gelatin texture and the egg yolk green from fermentation, to my surprise, this was a delicious snack.
As a giant lover of seafood, the Addiction Aquatic Development fish market in Taipei is the ultimate destination. A high-end fish market with some of the best sashimi, grilled eel and other fish products I had ever tasted, a great spot for lunch!
In conclusion, Taipei left a lasting impression on me to such an extent that I returned to Taipei a second time in less than a month time to record even more incredible footage of this mesmerizing city. If you are considering of visiting Asia, do NOT skip Taiwan.

Fo Guang Shan is an international Chinese Buddhist monastic order based in Taiwan that practices humanistic buddhism. The headquarters of Fo Guang Shan, located in Dashu District, Kaohsiung, is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan. The organization is also one of the largest charity organizations in Taiwan. The organization's counterpart for laypeople is known as the Buddha's Light International Association.
Founded in 1967 by Hsing Yun, the order promotes Humanistic Buddhism and is known for its efforts in the modernization of Chinese Buddhism. The order is famous for its use of technology and its temples are often furnished with the latest equipment.[1][2] Hsing Yun's stated position for Fo Guang Shan is that it is an amalgam of all Eight Schools of Chinese Buddhism (八宗兼弘).
In Taiwan, Hsing Yun is popularly referred to as one of the Four Heavenly Kings and Fo Guang Shan is considered one of the Four Great Mountains or four major Buddhist organizations of Taiwanese Buddhism, along with Dharma Drum Mountain, Tzu Chi, and Chung Tai Shan. by GOOGLE

Travel in Taiwan (2016, 1/2)
Have your camera ready when boarding the ferry to Qijin Island at Gushan Ferry Pier. Locals stream onto the lower parking-lot deck on scooters (you go to the upper deck, via a separate entrance). The ride across the narrow, ship-packed Kaohsiung Harbor is so quick that many don’t bother to get off their machines. Qijin Island is a 9km-long silt-created giant sandbar that serves as a breakwater and defines the harbor’s form. Its tourist area is on the north end, beyond the ferry pier.
Qihou Lighthouse, a snow-white 11-meter-high Baroque-style tower erected by the Japanese in 1916, stands at the edge of a sea-facing cliff guarding the harbor’s exceedingly narrow north-end mouth. Enthralling views of the busy harbor can be enjoyed as ships squeeze by below. The old Qihou Battery, on the west side of the hill, was built by a justifiably anxious Qing Dynasty government in the 1870s, fearful of invasion by the Japanese or Western powers.
The young, expansive, and still-growing Pier-2 Art Center (pier-2.khcc.gov.tw), a special zone that is at the heart of the city’s cultural-creative bloom, has become one of its most popular attractions. The numerous old, renovated Kaohsiung Harbor warehouses here, long abandoned, were formerly used to store such goods as fish meal and granulated sugar. Today they are cultural-creative incubator stages for domestic and international exhibitions, festivals, live indoor and outdoor musical, theatrical, and busker performances, and large-scale outdoor installation artworks and graffiti-style/3D murals, many wonderfully quirky and whimsical, some created by artists-in-residence.
The king of Kaohsiung has long been, and remains, the lofty 85 Sky Tower, which looks like a giant spacecraft propped atop two massive booster rockets, ready to launch. Two spanking-new structures, Kaohsiung Exhibition Center (kecc.com.tw) and Kaohsiung Main Public Library (ksml.edu.tw), are within easy walking distance. The park-surrounded harborside exhibition facility looks like a paean to Beijing’s iconic Bird’s Nest. Be sure to visit the green library’s lovely 8F rooftop hanging garden, which has a fine broad view of the harbor and Qijin.
What’s not to love about the Love River? On my first few visits, in the 1990s, it was a brackish “waterway” in which the water moved little, if at all. Today, thanks to dedicated eco-engineering, it is clean, the waters flow freely, and fish have returned. The landscaped banks are lined with benches, bike- and pedestrian-friendly paths, and attractive lamp lighting. The mood is best at night, when the cafés, bars, and small eateries are brightly lit up.

McGraw Library Concept
Library Concept Statement
The Library East Branch was first built in the 1960's, then remodeled for expansion in the 1980's, doubling in size to 12,400 square feet. The library is ready for expansion again having outgrown its size, this time the building will be designed to be about 30,000 square feet. All administrative offices will be moved to the East Branch in addition to offices at the buildings now.
I propose that most of the existing building be turned into private areas for the library staff. The addition will house public areas. There will be an addition added above the 1960's original building, while a much larger two-story addition will be added to the West of the building, connecting the addition and the existing building with a shared wall. A car port/ drive thru will be placed in front of the new addition for people who just want to drop off a book. This means that the parking to the north and the parking closet to the west of the building will have to be removed; however the large parking lot to the far west will not be affected.
The program calls for a meeting room that can be accessible even after library hours, stemming from the entry will be a lobby that provides direct access to the meeting room, bathrooms, eating area, and kitchen. From the lobby a staff member can access the offices directly, or patrons of the library can entry the main public areas of the library.
Since the over-all surrounding area of this library is more commercial than residential the library is designed with more commercial aspects. The over-all shape of the addition has come from inspiration of the cylinder lamp on the outside of the building; the addition has waves to the outside walls which will create comfortable seating areas, and draw interest to the building. The waves will have large columns to separate the waves using much of the same ideas of the current Irondequoit library entry. The addition will have smaller columns on the sides of windows to slightly mimic the existing building's paneling.
One additional feature of the library are solar panels with louvers, placed over the carport and over the wavy wall to perform as shading for seating areas below, and to collect solar energy. The louvers are angled towards the Southern sky for efficiency.
The goal of this addition is to attract people to the library who have been using library systems outside of Irondequoit because they do not like what the existing libraries have to offer them.
