Tainan is the oldest city in Taiwan, but the city has not changed much since the early part of the 20th century and has become more of a historic tourist destination than a cosmopolitan hub.Anping district is the historical heart of Tainan.There are many old buildings here which reminds you of an older Taiwan. Many houses are empty now but with the help of government funding, owners have the choice of turning their homes into restaurants, shops or guesthouses.

Tainan is the oldest city in Taiwan and was the capital during imperial times. It is famous for its temples, historic buildings and snack food. The city is currently the fifth largest city on the island after New Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung and Taipei with a population of over 1.8 million. For a city of its size by population, Tainan's size by land area is exceptional. Very few buildings are more than 5 to 6 stories in height and most are between two and three stories. Like other Taiwanese cities, most people in Tainan, including taxi drivers, cannot speak English well (except for high school and college students), though some of the older generation can converse in Japanese. However, to help visitors get around, there are free tri-lingual (Chinese, English and Japanese) map-guides available at the railway station.
One of the most popular destinations in the Tainan area is the Anping District (安平區； Ānpíng qū). The Anping District is the historical heart of Tainan, the original capital of Taiwan. Anping is home to the Anping Old Fort (安平古堡； Ānpíng gu bǎo), the Anping Tree House (安平樹屋 Ānpíng shù wū） (a warehouse with massive banyan trees growing out of it), and numerous restaurants and food stalls.
Confucius Temple A serene destination surrounded by a small park. Explore the temple, then go to the incredibly popular shaved-ice store right on the opposite side.

These are a few of the things we did in Tainan. I'm so gutted because at the end of our stay in Tainan I think I managed to wipe/format my SD card so I lost 2 days worth of clips :(
Of all the towns and cities we visited in Taiwan, Tainan was my favorite. The food, the people, the culture and the hotel were all amazing!
The highlight of our trip was definitely the meal we had at 度小月 Du Hsiao Yueh Restaurant (no.2 below) and the charcoal grilled peanut brittle wrap with coriander (no.7 below).
So whilst they are not all captured on the videos, here is a list of all the places we visited in Tainan:

7. 土豆伯府城花生糖 Charcoal Grilled Peanut Brittle Roll

(delicious old school Taiwanese snack where the peanut brittle is heated on a charcoal fire then passed through rollers to be flattened then wrapped around fresh coriander; so good eaten warm)
8. 阿江炒鱔魚 A Jiang Stir-Fried Eel Yi Noodles

(only 2 things on the menu, wet or dry stir fried smoked eel noodles)
9. 神農街 Shennong Street

(really pretty old street with a Japanese vibe; aka Osaka of Taiwan)
10. 泰成水果店 Fruit Ice Shop

(frozen fruit smoothie ice blocks served on half a honeydew/cantaloupe melon... bit over hyped)
11. 蜷尾家甘味處散步甜食 Soft serve ice cream

(famous ice cream chain, popular flavours sell out early. I tried the Taiwanese tea soft serve and it had really good flavour)
12. 台南雙層巴士 Tainan Sightseeing Bus

(Tickets can be bought from the first stop outside Tainan main train station. We got promo tickets for TW$300 = £7.50 for the full day which are usually TW$500 = £12.50. They offer 3 routes which go to the main tourist spots but live commentary is only in Chinese and the English is using the pre-recorded audio headphones)
13. 大東夜市 Ta-Tung/Dadong Night Market

(pretty much the same vendors as the Garden Night Market because they operate on alternate days though still worth it to get your night market food fix)
14. 夏家手工魚麵 Fish Noodles

(run by two ladies rushed off their feet; with queues out front. Super cheat eats, really good food. Noodles have a unique chew to them because of the fish meat)

Tainan, officially Tainan City is a special municipality of Taiwan, facing the Taiwan Strait in the west and south. Tainan is the oldest city on the island of Taiwan and also commonly known as the Capital City for its over 200 years of history as the capital of Taiwan under Koxinga and later Qing dynasty rule. Tainan's complex history of comebacks, redefinitions and renewals inspired its popular nickname the Phoenix City.
Tainan was initially established by the Dutch East India Company as a ruling and trading base called Fort Zeelandia during the period of Dutch rule on Taiwan. After Dutch colonists were defeated by Koxinga in 1661, Tainan remained as the capital of the Tungning Kingdom until 1683 and afterwards the capital of Taiwan Prefecture under Qing Dynasty rule until 1887, when the new provincial capital was moved to Taipei. Tainan has been historically regarded as one of the oldest cities in Taiwan, and its former name, Tayouan, has been claimed to be the origin of the name Taiwan. It is also one of Taiwan's cultural capitals, for its rich folk cultures including the famous local snack food, extensively preserved Taoist rites and other living local traditions covering everything from child birth to funerals. The city houses the first Confucian school–temple, built in 1665, the remains of the Eastern and Southern gates of the old city, and countless other historical monuments. Tainan claims more Buddhist and Taoist temples than any other city in Taiwan.

Kaohsiung to Tainan
We took the local commuter train from Kaohsiung main station to Tainan. The public transport is so cheap... we paid £1.50 each for the 1 hour journey.
In Tainan we had the best meal of our trip! The dishes at the famous 度小月 Du Hsiao Yueh are everything I expected them to be. We arrived around 4pm so the restaurant was empty and I think we shocked the staff with the amount of food we ordered!
