The Danxia landform refers to various landscapes found in southeast, southwest and northwest China that consist of a red bed characterized by steep cliffs. It is a unique type of petrographic geomorphology found in China. Danxia landform is formed from red-coloured sandstones and conglomerates of largely Cretaceous age. The landforms look very much like karst topography that forms in areas underlain by limestones, but since the rocks that form danxia are sandstones and conglomerates, they have been called pseudo-karst landforms. They were formed by endogenous forces (including uplift) and exogenous forces (including weathering and erosion).
The first studies on what are now referred to as Danxia landforms were conducted at Mount Danxia near Shaoguan, China. In the 1920s and 1930s Chinese geologists made an effort to learn more about these interesting geomorphic structures. Danxia landforms are made up uplifted continental crust that has been faulted and eroded, exposing large scarps of layered rock, red in color.
Danxia landforms cover several provinces in southeast China. Taining County, Fujian Province, has very good examples of young danxia landforms wherein deep, narrow valleys have been formed. As the landform gets older, valleys widen and one gets isolated towers and ridges.The danxia landform is named after Mount Danxia, one of the most famous examples of the danxia landform. A very peculiar feature of danxia landscape is the development of numerous caves of various sizes and shapes. The caves tend to be shallow and isolated, unlike true karst terrain where caves tend to form deep, interconnecting networks. In 2010, several danxia landscapes in southern China, with a general name of China Danxia, were inscribed as a World Heritage Site. The six inscribed danxia landform areas are: Mount Langshan and Mount Wanfo (Hunan Province), Mount Danxia (Guangdong Province), Taining and Mount Guanzhi (Fujian Province), Mount Longhu and Guifeng (Jiangxi Province), Fangyan, Mount Jianglang (Zhejiang Province), and Mount Chishui (Guizhou Province). The total core area of 6 regions above is 73945 ha (182,722 acres), and the total buffer area is 65446 ha (161,720 acres).[1] Other notable danxia areas, such as Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, are not included in the World Heritage Site.

China Danxia is the name given in China to landscapes developed on continental red terrigenous sedimentary beds influenced by endogenous forces (including uplift) and exogenous forces (including weathering and erosion). The inscribed site comprises six areas found in the sub-tropical zone of south-west China.
They are characterized by spectacular red cliffs and a range of erosional landforms, including dramatic natural pillars, towers, ravines, valleys and waterfalls. These rugged landscapes have helped to conserve sub-tropical broad-leaved evergreen forests, and host many species of flora and fauna, about 400 of which are considered rare or threatened.
It must be explained that Danxia is not a place, but the name of a type of landscape found in China, characterized by prominent boulders and steep cliffs. It is similar to karst rocks, but formed by layers of conglomerate instead of compact blocks of rock. (please see my slide show, Guilin).
China Danxia is a serial property comprising six component parts (Chishui, Taining, Langshan, Danxiashan, Longhushan, and Jianglangshan) found in the sub-tropical zone of south-eastern China within approximately 1700 km crescent shaped arc from Guizhou Province in the west to Zhejiang Province in the east.
China Danxia is an impressive and unique landscape of great natural beauty. The reddish conglomerate and sandstone that form this landscape of exceptional natural beauty have been shaped into spectacular peaks, pillars, cliffs and imposing gorges. Together with the contrasting forests, winding rivers and majestic waterfalls, China Danxia presents a significant natural phenomenon.
These incredible landscapes look as if they have been painted in the sweeping pastel brush strokes of an impressionistic artwork.
The landform is a unique type of petrographic geomorphology which is found only in China which consists of red-colored sandstones and conglomerates of largely Cretaceous age.
Formed of layers of reddish sandstone, the terrain has over time been eroded into a series of mountains surrounded by curvaceous cliffs and unusual rock formations.
The scenic area is popular among tourists, who come to enjoy scenic walks and boat rides through the area, which is also home to a number of temples.
The World Heritage Committee decided to include China Danxia Landform in the World Heritage List at its 34th meeting held in Brasilia, capital of Brazil, on August 1, 2010.
In typically Chinese style, the signage local to the rock formations pictured now boast of it as a 'world famous UNESCO geopark of China'.
The China Danxia world heritage site in fact covers a range of landscapes in Southern China, of which Mount Daxia in Guangdong is only the most famous.
The other five are: Mount Langshan and Mount Wanfoshan, Hunan Province; Taining and Guanzhoushan, Fujian Province; Mount Longhu and Guifeng, Jiangxi Province; Mount Chishui, Guizhou Province; and Fangyan and Mount Jianglang, Zhejiang Province.
These remarkable pictures show the actual scenery of Danxia Landform at Nantaizi village of Nijiaying town, in Linzhe county of Zhangye, Gansu province of China.
While the photos are certainly incredible, there could be some slight photo manipulation going on to make the colors pop a bit more than they would naturally. Still, the mountains are amazing.

The great mountain in the world (Laojun Mountain)
Laojun Mountain is one of the core scenic spots of Funiu Mountain National Geological Park. It is located in Luoyang City, Henan Province, China. The mountains are lush and picturesque. Everywhere you can see the springs overflowing from the cracks of the mountains and rocks. There are more than a dozen hidden in the lush forest. At the waterfall, the clear rapids fell from the top of the tens of meters high cliff. After the rain, Laojun Mountain, the clouds are surrounded by various peaks. If you go to the top of the mountain, you will have the opportunity to see the beautiful clouds and sunrise.
Cliffhanger! - 100m high store dubbed world's most 'inconvenient'
Dubbed as the world's most inconvenient convenience store, this cliff side store hangs 100 metres above ground and provides climbers with supplies and a good mountain story, footage filmed in Pingjiang County, in the Hunan Province on Saturday shows.
On the footage we see daring visitors climbing up the hill side until they reach the store, where they can catch their breath and refreshing beverages like energy drinks on their way to finish up their climbing route.
The store stands on the hill side of a mountain in Shiniuzhai National Geological Park, which consists of a red bed characterised by steel cliffs in Pingjiang Country, otherwise known as Danxia landform.
According to Wuwen Hu, a staffer at the convenience store, If the climber is thirsty or tired, the store can provide the support for them to finish the rest of trip.
He added that every staffer gets a proper training before joining the team, since the park has to guarantee the security of them and the visitors.
The store is up and running since April 25, 2018.

They don't need additional specific training for being the staff in the convenience store on the cliff. More importantly, they need the courage to finish the work.

Work on the Dazu Rock Carvings began in the first year of Yonghui in the Tang Dynasty (650A.D.), and continued until the Ming and Qing dynasties. Now, it is as popular as the Yungang and Longmen Grottoes.

Travel in Taiwan May/June, 2016:
Xiaoyeliu was our first stop inside the East Coast National Scenic Area (eastcoast-nsa.gov.tw), which stretches from just north of Taitung City to just south of Hualien City. Beyond its sheer beauty, this natural stone-sculpture scenic area is highly info-taining for those types – like your writer – thrilled with matters geology-related. Along the shore you’ll find large rock formations – honeycomb rock, mushroom rock, tofu rock, cuestas – and in the visitor center well-crafted models and rock samples introducing the geological features of Xiaoyeliu and the coastal mountains.
A short distance north is Jialulan. This is a seaside art park – and an eco-engineering showcase, on a transformed waste-soil site created during construction of the adjoining air-force base – with works spread out over an expansive grassland. Most are of wood, and most of the wood is of coastline-gathered driftwood, a popular Taitung-artist medium. My favorite installation features a wood-weave shell stuffed full with the human-created detritus that washes ashore in monster storms – things you’d expect, like fishing gear, but also much that’s bizarre. A stethoscope? A calculator?
Another short drive north brings you to small Jiamuzi Bay, at the foot of Mt. Dulan. This is a place of stunning archetypal tropical scenery – the mountain sloping right down to the coast, coconut trees along the shore, attractive coral reefs just offshore, disappearing under frothy waves and then popping up again. This is a popular spot for surfing, snorkeling, and other watersports.
The Water Running Upward attraction, a must-visit spot for the tour-bus crowd, is just south of Dulan village. And just what is it? A long, narrow, shallow irrigation channel comes down from the hills, running through a small sculpted park. And for all the world, it looks as though the gurgling waters defy gravity along this 100m stretch. Real or illusion? We inspected the waterworks from every angle; the stream, counter-intuitively, seems not to slow down or pool up at all. Take the riddle on for yourself with a first-hand gander. (Nevertheless, I give you the answer at article’s end.)
The sprawling, big-shouldered old Dulan Sugar Factory, in Dulan village, one of the coast’s largest Amis-tribe settlements, makes sugar no more. The heritage complex, now protected, is today a place for local and expat artists and craftsmen. There are artist workshops, a cultural-creative boutique, a café, a craft brewery, Taiwanese and Japanese restaurants, a quick-food kiosk, a driftwood stage, and other attractions. The big action is on Saturday nights, when there is free live music, with both local and expatriate talent performing.
On the slopes of Mt. Dulan just to Dulan’s northwest, on a road that leads to the popular Moonlight Inn café (see Stay/Eat/Buy article), is the Dulan Site. The short paths to the spread-out finds on view, which include a sarcophagus and large stones from a long wall used in worship rites, start at roadside and have clear signage. They are from what is called the Qilin culture, and date to about 3,000 years ago. It is believed that the local tribal inhabitants likely moved up here after the coast was hit by a tsunami. Mt. Dulan is revered as a divine presence by the area’s Amis and Bunun tribal groups.

However, the geopolitical reality leaves us, worldwide, small pieces of a country within another, enclaves whose situation may cause no little discomfort and inconvenience to the inhabitants. We will see some of the world.
Llivia. Spain into France. Located north of the province of Gerona, Llivia is a small town of just over 1,500 inhabitants whose eight miles square are completely surrounded by French territory.
Büsingen am Hochrein, Germany within Suiza. Büsingen German is the only municipality that has own tuition, and also the only one where the Swiss franc is legal tender, or where residents have the right to Swiss citizenship.

As its name implies, Fort Robinson was operated as a fort from the early days of the Old West until after World War II. Many original buildings survive and remain in use at the park today, and others have been reconstructed. Fort Robinson was the site of the 1879 Cheyenne Outbreak and the death of famed Sioux Chief Crazy Horse. Over the years, the fort served the Red Cloud Indian Agency, as a cavalry remount station, K-9 dog training center, POW camp and beef research station. It was established as a state park in 1962.
