Dominican Republic SAFE Project - Andropological bull evaluations
For small livestock farmers in the Dominican Republic, the fertility of the one bull on their farm could mean the success or fail of their business. However, most farmers do not conduct andrological evaluations before buying a bull, which means they buy a bull without knowing if it is fertile or not. Working with the DR Safe Agriculture and Food Export (SAFE) project, funded by the USDA, NCBA CLUSA is supporting cattle and dairy producer organizations in providing the right training and access to quality evaluations.
Fixing Quiterio's Farm
Quiterio surveys his farm with Gaspar and Matt for our farm renovation pilot program. To better allow farmers to take advantage of our microfinance program we are restoring farms using sustainable organic methods. Even small plots like the one we are restoring on Quiterio's farm can make a large difference in income for a family. We are restoring just shy of 1 acre of land, but that will be enough to feed Quiterio's family and have enough left over to sell for profit. He will also now be able to take full advantage of the low-interest loans we offer. With this capital, and access to free community resources like our nursery, he can further improve his farm. In return for this restoration work and access to low-interest loans, Quiterio has agreed to conserve the old-growth forest that is growing in a ravine on his property -- this land is not arable, but is now in effect making him money through our program.

This is an Introduction to some of the permaculture projects I'm involved in here on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. I'm mainly talking about my work with Taino Farm and the eXtreme hotel; as well as Ada Smith's garden curriculum at the Mariposa DR Foundation, and there's also some footage in my own home 'Dharma Farm'

Agriculture of the Dominican Republic through images
Description: Teaching the class about the food and agriculture of the Dominican Republic through a collage of images.
Why I chose it? My family immigrated from DR so I was interested to see how the agriculture that they produce has impacted what I eat in my house even after years of being in the United States.

Bananas Don't Grow on Trees: Making money in a Dominican banana batey
This short film presents a portrait of small banana-growing communities in the Dominican Republic known as bateyes. Near the Dominican-Haitian border, the banana bateyes are shared by Dominicans and undocumented Haitian migrants who rely on each other for economic gain. Dominican farmers and shopkeepers depend on the labor and residence of Haitian migrant workers who are seeking a way to support themselves and their families.
In the film Dominican and Haitian residents talk about their work on the surrounding banana farms and discuss everyday life in their batey. In doing so, they shed light on the economic forces that bring Haitians to the Dominican Republic for a job that brings bananas to European supermarkets. The film prompts viewers to reflect on the complexity of Dominican-Haitian relations and the politics of Fair Trade banana production in the Dominican Republic.
Made in the banana bateyes of the northwestern Dominican Republic, this film was filmed and edited during a year of ethnographic fieldwork. The movie is an accompaniment to a PhD thesis currently being written by Kimberly Marie Wynne of the University of Oslo on the same communities.
Spanish with English subtitles.
Filmed and edited using a canon 7d, zoom H1 audio recorder and Final Cut Pro X
