Why Taipei is the Best City To Ride a Bike [Cycling in Taiwan]
I'm in Taipei for work at the 2019 Annual Taipei Cycle Show. This is my first time travelling to Taiwan for work, but coincidentally Taipei just so happens to be my favorite large city for cycling and riding my bike.
Check out all of my Cycling in Taiwan videos here
Unfortunately I was not able to bring my bike this time around, but one of my local friends kindly lent me his spare road bike so I was able to get in some rides each morning before the Taipei Cycle Show. Despite the busy days and late nights, I made sure to get up early every single day for my ride.
Sometimes it can be difficult to find motivation to ride during travel and work, but I couldn't help myself since Taipei is actually my favorite large city for cycling. Why, you might ask? Here are a few of my main reasons in no particular order.
Reason #1 - Cycling Paths
For starters, they have hundreds of kilometers of dedicated cycling paths that are well maintained, lit up at night, and separated from main pedestrian traffic. These cycling paths are usually parallel to the rivers and they are built into most of the main bridges, so you can get all over the city without having to go into dangerous traffic.
These paths are especially great because they accommodate everyone. More people are leaving their cars to use the bike paths instead, reducing traffic congestion. Runners and cyclists are both happy that they have their dedicated lanes. There's also a bunch of free exercise and sports facilities (basketball, tennis, soccer, baseball, etc..) all along the cycling paths, so you see a lot of different people out.
Reason #2 - Varied Terrain
All of the cycling paths are completely flat, and nearby there are tons of super tall and super steep mountains. Within a 15-30 minute ride from the center of the city, you can be on an awesome climb with no cars around.
Reason #3 - Cycling Community
There are tons of cyclists in Taiwan, especially in Taipei. No matter which roads you ride on, the cycling paths or the mountains, you're bound to find some company. Everyone is really friendly!
Reason #4 - Attitude Towards Cyclists
I'm from the USA, and most people there have a very negative and sometimes aggressive attitude towards cyclists. Taiwan is the exact opposite and often people will cheer me on while I'm riding, especially in the mountains.
Reason #5 - Female Cyclists
I'm not sure what the reason is, but Taiwan seems to have the largest amount of female cyclists that I've seen in the various countries that I've visited and cycled in. In Japan especially there are very few female cyclists, especially those who will ride alone. But in Taipei/Taiwan, I see solo female cyclists all over the place. It's great to see more women who are into the sport, and I would like to see more of that in Japan.
Also, many of the people I met during the Taipei Cycle Show were women, so many women also seem to be working in the cycling industry in Taiwan as well.
Reason #6 - Bike Share
I didn't mention this in the video, but Taipei has an awesome and HUGE bike share program with YouBike. These things are everywhere, the program is really well maintained, and they are super cheap and easy to rent. It's common to see people riding these bikes everywhere in the city, for both locals and tourists alike. Unfortunately I can't quite get the saddle height as high as I'd like so I don't like to use them for too long of trips.
Reason #7 - Food
There are a bunch of cycling cafes around the cycling paths, and Taiwan in general is a country famous for great food options. There are tons of street food options and night markets, which are a delicious and cheap option after a long ride.
These are just a few of the reasons why Taipei is my favorite city for cycling. I'm sure there's some other great cities out there for cycling, so leave your suggestions down below in the comments. I'll add them to my list of places I'd like to visit and cycle sometime in the future.

Taiwan Cycling Trip: Taipei to Jiufen Historic Street & Shifen Waterfall (九份 + 十分大瀑布)
This is sadly our last cycling vlog from our recent Taiwan Cycling Trip. In today's ride, we'll be riding our rental road bikes from Taipei to Jiufen Historic Street (九份), and we'll be riding through the mountains to get there.
Taipei to Shifen & Jiufen Cycling Route
Our original plan was to do a round trip ride, but we didn't account for the extremely hot temperatures and significant amount of climbing (1,700 meters), so we ended up bringing our bikes on the train back to Taipei from Badu station.
Overall, this was an amazing ride with lots of beautiful sights along the way. One of the other highlights was stopping at the Shifen Waterfall (十分大瀑布). Once we arrived in Jiufen, (which is a famous mountain town known as being an inspirational location for the movie Spirited Away), we ate some delicious Taiwanese food at a restaurant with a beautiful open window view of the nearby ocean and mountains.
Joining along on today's ride is Quinn, whom we met a few days ago randomly while cycling along the Taipei Riverside Cycling Paths on our way back from Tamsui.
All I have to say is wow, the cycling in Taiwan has been amazing and we're really looking forward to our next cycling trip here. Also, a big thanks to Quinn for helping show us around and especially for introducing all of the good foods for us to eat.
We still have a few regular travel and food VLOG videos coming up from this trip, so stay tuned for those.

She Finds her Dream Bike at GIANT in Taipei | Bike Shops of Taiwan #01
While traveling around Taiwan, we stopped at a few Giant Bike shops that focused mainly on rentals since we were using those bikes for our cycling tour along the east coast of Taiwan from Hualien to Taitung.
I was curious how these Giant bike shops compared to the regular stores, so we decided to check out one of the main Giant Bike shops in downtown Taipei to see what the bicycle shops are like here in Taiwan.
The shop we visited is pretty small, but makes full use of its space with lots of road bikes hanging from the ceiling. One of those bikes, the Giant TCR Advanced Pro Team, caught my wife's eye and she quickly fell in love... Unfortunately, we don't have the money to buy such a nice road bike right now, but I was still pretty to see some desire from her to get a new bike.
There were also a lot of useful components for sale much cheaper than what I can buy in the US and in Japan. Things like bottles, bottle cages, frame bags, bikepacking bags, helmets, etc..
Hope you guys enjoy this tour of this Giant Bike Shop in Taipei, Taiwan! Keep in mind that there are a lot of different Giant stores, and there will likely be some differences depending on where you go.
Here's the branch that we visited

Cycling in Taiwan: Taipei to Kaohsiung via the East Coast
***
Following Taiwan, I went to Yangshuo, China. Video here:
***
OOPS (sorry!)... turns out my half-baked theory about the hotel at 10:30 is completely wrong! Thanks to the commenters that kindly pointed out the real reason (environmental regulations and an ongoing legal controversy).
***
You can't do much better than Taiwan for a convenient and scenic cycling trip! Made my way from Taipei firstly northwest toward the coast, then down the East Coast via Yilan, Taroko, Hualien and Taitung before crossing over to Kenting.
I ended the trip in Kaohsiung, deciding to skip on the traffic and stop lights along the main route back North to Taipei.

Taiwan Cycling Trip | Taipei Riverside Bike Path to Tamsui (台北~淡水)
We moved to our new (temporary) apartment in downtown Taipei, which came stocked with some rental road bikes for us to use! After resting up for a few days from our long cycling tour along the Taiwan East coast, we were itching to get back on the bike and cycle around Taipei.. Well, at least I was (I think my wife still wanted to rest a bit, but...)
Today we decided to ride our new rental road bikes to Tamsui from Taipei. Most of the way is along the amazing Riverside Bike Path (cycling road) network in Taipei, so nice and flat with beautiful pavement and no cars. I think this might be one of the best cycling road networks in the world, and I've heard there are over 200km of these roads in Taipei alone.. And there's a bunch of other great cycling roads around other cities in Taiwan as well..
We saw lots of beautiful sights along the way and got some food once we arrived in Tamsui. We continued on to the Fisherman's Wharf and lovers bridge for some last few photo opportunities before starting our trip back to Taipei.
On our way back, we were approached by a random person who turned out to be a fan from the US who has lived all over Asia. This was pretty exciting for us since it was our first time running into a fan outside of Japan and he (Quinn) turned out to be a really great and interesting guy to talk to. We ended up riding all the way back to Taipei together and grabbed some dinner together at the local night market. To be continued in our next video!
Thanks Quinn for helping guide us around and especially for introducing so much good food!
Today's ride on Strava (total of 90km with a surprise mountain climb at the end in the dark)
