Taiwan Trip Made Easy Day 1
Taiwan Trip Made easy Day 1
Take note of our trip tips.
We will cover our activities from the flight to the hotel . Actually we arrived Taipei in the evening so we don’t consider it day 1. The next morning is our day 1.
The best transport from the airport to any hotel would be the Taxi. There are numerous ways to travel like train, buses and Uber. But the most convenient to get is the Airport Taxi that costs less than PHP 2,000. It has trip ticket and an assurance that you won’t be scammed.
Also a good deal considering there are 4 of us traveling with 1 infant. It took us 40mins from the airport to the hotel unlike those other transports that offer cheaper rates but would take more of your time.
For Breakfast we had cheesy Beef at the Gratan House in Ximending area. Our hotel is located at the center so everything is almost walking distance. Check out our hotel : hotel papa whale.
We immediately ordered the “50 Bubble tea” which is famous here in Taiwan. After eating we then proceeded to walk the shopping center on the streets of ximending.
Afterwards we decided to go to the Tamsui Area. We wanted to show to our children this beautiful place that we visited first without them last year.
We used uber for all the travels here in Taiwan. faster and more convenient for the family, it costed 577 TWD from shengdu to tamsui. And in less than 30 minutes we were able to enjoy tamsui.
We walked the tamsui bay area and decided to rent a motorized bike for easier travel. There are also bicycles for rent, but who would want to exert effort while going around, we would need extra strength to go about the day.
We went to the Tamsui Fisherman’s wharf using the motorbike and enjoyed the scenery while driving. The famous Tamsui Lover’s Bridge was there together with so many street foods that our kids enjoyed.
On our way back to our motorbikes we passed by the tamsui hotel, the yacht dock and the waterfalls. The bike rental is cheap only 300 pesos per hour. After we returned the motorbikes we walked around to enjoy some more of the scenery and the street food while listening to the Lady playing the Violin.
To save us time and strength we booked another uber to bring us to the biggest night market in taipei... the shilin market.
Uber charged us 426 TWD from zhongzhang tamsui to jihe road shilin district.
This is our favorite night market and we kept going there every night until we went home.
Shilin market is filled with food and items if you are in the mood to shop. There was also a Tiger Sugar branch there which suprisingly doesn’t have a line... after a looong night of shopping and food tripping we decided to call it a day, went back to the hotel and rest.
Watch out for our day 2. If you have questions DM me on my instagram or post it here!

Astoria Cafe / 明星咖啡館, Taipei / 臺北 /台北 / 타이페이
The Cafe Astoria / 明星咖啡館 is the first Western style bakery in Taiwan. It is located in the Zhongzheng District of Taipei, Taiwan on WuChang Street across from the City God Temple.
In October 1949, 18-year-old Archiybold Chien became business partners with six Russian immigrants who fled Shanghai to Taiwan. Together they opened Taipei's first Western style pastry shop on Wuchang Street in downtown Taipei. They offered pasteries on the first floor and a cafe on the second floor. One month after the Astoria opened for business, Chiang Kai-shek resumed presidency of the Republic of China and relocated his government to Taiwan. After the Korean War broke out in 1950, the United States maintained a significant troop presence on Taiwan. During this time, the Astoria hosted many important guests from abroad, including Jane Fonda. The cafe was also frequently visited by Chiang Ching-Kuo--who had studied in Moscow for many years--and his Belarussian wife Chiang Fang-liang. In 1950, Astoria hosted a Russian New Year Celebration which was attended by Chiang Ching-Kuo and his family. Chiang Kai-shek's last birthday cake was also prepared by chefs from the Astoria. After World War II, the Cafe Astoria became a popular spot for many socialites and government officials. It was also a spot where many struggling writers and intellectuals met and composed their works. Famous writers, poets and artists known to have frequented the Astoria include Pai Hsien-yung, Chou Meng-tieh, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre founder Lin Hwai-min and writer Yu Guangzhong.

Taipei Main Station, Knife Massage & BEST Pork Bowl w/ Yumin (✈️Travel ????????Taiwan Series Day 8)
Day 8 of the ✈️ Travel Taiwan Series. Be part of the journey:
(Timestamps are below.)
0:55 Meat market in Taipei. It's located next to the breakfast shop that we went to on Day 2. The name of the breakfast shop is: 家蓁早餐店 (Jia Zhen Breakfast Restaurant) and is located at No. 27, Section 1, Da'an Road, Da’an District, Taipei City, Taiwan 106
1:35 Meeting up with Yumin in Taipei Main Station
3:10 A look around, and inside, Taipei Main Station
4:05 Entering Taipei City Mall
4:48 Arrival at Beimen Station
6:38 This has to be my favorite pork bowl of all time. And yes, I like it better than zhu rou fan. It's creamy pork knuckle topped over rice with an assortment of vegetables and an egg. Though, wasn't too fond of its taste. The dish as a whole taste more like a fresh homemade meal that you would find in someone's home than anything else.
The name of the restaurant is Zhengi Zhujiaofan, but on Google Maps, it's called Zheng Pork Knuckle 鄭記豬腳飯鄭記豬腳飯 and the address is: No. 22, Yanping South Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 1
10:10 We then bumped into a knife massage place (Dao liao) located in Taipei City Mall. I was quite shocked to see a type of massage that used actual knives. However, keep in mind that they aren't sharp, but rather thick. I found it very interesting and decided to check it out. Here's how I felt: a piece of meat that was getting beating until I was tender. Odd, right? It didn't feel painful but rather unique.
15:50 Talking with Saki!
16:26 The cheapest dumplings in Taipei?! LOL!
16:55 Goodbye Yumin!

National Palace Museum, Ximending, & Duck Head (✈️Travel ????????Taiwan Series Day 9)
Day 9 of the ✈️ Travel ???????? Taiwan Series. Be part of the journey:
(Timestamps are below.)
0:30 Is the Travel Taiwan Series worth it?
3:13 Do you also lose umbrellas? lol.
3:33 Heading to the National Palace Museum 國立故宮博物院
3:53 Jumping on the wrong bus...
4:22 Welcome to the National Palace Museum!
5:35 The challenge I made to myself: if I'm truly proud of the videos I did during my Travel Taiwan Series, and I do a video a day, then I will reward myself by returning to National Palace Museum and getting the scroll I was originally fascinated by the first time I came to Taiwan and, of course, still fascinated by till this day. It's called the The Wuyong Scroll Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, Huang Kuang-wang, Yuan Dynasty.
I found it puzzling that none of the staff were able to translate any of the Chinese text that were on the scroll. They told me that it's a very old Chinese and that not even they can fully understand it, nonetheless translate it. If anyone knows what it says, please let me know!
6:26 Yes, I went right back to Zhengji Zhujianfan to get their awesome pork knuckle bowl! lol
7:15 A view of Ximen
7:32 Great place to have some Taiwanese bread, snacks, and a pork wrap! Very unique. Name of the place is 東北大餅衡陽店

7:50 Trying out the 3 types of Taiwanese breads (I say bread, but it's so unique!) at 東北大餅衡陽店號
10:23 Welcome to Ximending!
10:48 Trying a sample of Red Bean Q Pork Pie. My apologies, I really dislike this snack!
11:05 A taste of Nougat Biscuit

Taipei neighborhood chief funds food bank with unclaimed items lost on the MRT
A community-based food bank in Taipei helps provide mid-to-low-income residents with necessities. Part of its inventory and funding comes from serving as a clearing house for unclaimed items lost on the Taipei MRT. This looks like a supermarket but is actually a food bank in Zhongzheng District, Taipei. It provides mid-to-low-income residents with food and other vital goods. One method to acquire items is through trade.Lin Ming-KuanZhongzheng District Chief If there's a lot of rice which you can't finish, you have to be careful because it can attract bugs. So, for example, if you only need three bags of rice, you can bring the rest and exchange it for milk powder or crackers. This is the best way to avoid waste.Upon opening an account, food bank users are given points that can be redeemed

Went on a little bike ride from MRT Yuanshan Station to Songshan Railway Station, on the way visiting Confucius Temple, Bao'an Temple, Taipei Expo Park, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei Story House, Xinsheng Park Area, Lin An-tai Historical House and Museum, Dajia Riverside Park, Keelung River, Rainbow Bridge, Songshan Ciyou Temple, and Raohe Street Night Market.

Yuanshan Park Area
East of MRT Yuanshan Station lies the Taipei Expo Park, which served as venue for the 2010 Taipei International Flora Exposition. Many of the flower gardens and buildings created for the expo remain, and can still be enjoyed.
There you can also visit Maji Square, which in recent times has become one of Taipei’s hippest hangouts. The airy covered square includes an upscale grocery, a bagel shop, an “international food street”, featuring French, Mexican, Indian, Korean, Japanese, Thai and, of course, Taiwanese snack foods, a merry-go-round, the Triangle nightclub, a craft beer shop, a creative market, and restaurant-pubs.
Fine Arts Park Area
Continuing beyond Maji Square, you’ll pass the Pavilion of New Fashion, an imposing structure constructed of bamboo and PET bottles. Crossing Zhongshan North Road will then take you into the Fine Arts Park Area. Head left to visit the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, one of the city’s best museums. Beside its entrance area you’ll also find the Taipei Story House, a restored British Tudor-style mansion in which various exhibits are staged.
To complete your tour of Taipei Expo Park, cycle through the fairytale-like Floral Tunnel and over the eco-friendly Solar Bridge, then cross Xinsheng North Road to reach the third section, the Xinsheng Park Area. Here you’ll encounter wide-open spaces, more flower displays, a botanical garden, and the Pavilion of Dreams, home to a café that is a fine spot to stop for a drink.
Lin An Tai Historical House & Museum
North of the Pavilion of Dreams, cross Binjiang Street to reach the Lin An Tai Historical House & Museum, a gorgeously restored traditional south Fujian courtyard-style residence. If the complex seems oddly situated, that’s because decades ago it was saved from destruction in its original location on Siwei Road, and rebuilt here.
Dajia Riverside Park
Next, follow Lane 5 beside the complex to reach the Lin An Tai Evacuation Gate (No. 10 Water Gate), through which you can access Dajia Riverside Park. This lovely green expanse on the southern bank of the Keelung River between Zhongshan and Dazhi bridges is renowned as the venue for the annual Spring Wave Music and Art Festival and Taipei’s Dragon Boat Festival races. If lucky, you’ll get to see dragon-boat paddlers practicing near Dazhi Bridge.
This park also features a 75-meter-high water fountain which, when running, is a sight to behold, with the iconic Grand Hotel in the background across the river.
Rainbow Bridge
The path is flat for most of this journey, so you’ll barely break into a sweat before reaching the Rainbow Bridge. Pedestrian-only Rainbow Bridge is not in fact rainbow-colored; it is red, featuring a steel arch that is likened to the shape of a dragon leaping the river. This is a pretty spot to watch the sunset, and couples might have trouble resisting the temptation to take a romantic selfie beside the large steel sculpture of the word “LOVE” by the riverside path, with the illuminated bridge in the background.
Songshan Ciyou Temple
Before entering the 600-meter-long street in which the market is set up in the evening, you’ll want to first pop into Songshan Ciyou Temple, Taipei’s most renowned temple devoted to Mazu, Goddess of the Sea. The premises feature over a hundred deity statues, spread over six floors, with the ones at the top being the most impressive. The temple was recently restored, with a colorful new frieze added to the sides and back of the main Mazu shrine on the first floor.
Raohe Street Tourist Night Market
This night market is one of Taipei’s most famous, and many visitors say that it feels more authentic and less touristy than some of the bigger ones. The market’s most famous stall, evidenced by the long lineup even before the rest of the market really gets going, is Fuzhou Shizu Black Pepper Buns, right at the east-end entrance near the temple. At the center, another popular choice is Chen Dong Ribs Stewed in Medicinal Herbs.

Dongyin
Dongyin is actually two islands, joined by a causeway. Two hours from Nangan by ferry, this is Taiwan’s northernmost point, a windswept outpost of tremendous natural beauty, with Matsu’s most thrilling scenery, a place of lofty granite cliffs and rocky spurs projecting out into the teal-green sea.
The cape-tip is at the northern end of a peninsula called the Reclining Alligator – the resemblance is indeed striking – and atop the alligator’s well-defined snout, at the peninsula’s southern tip, is Stronghold No. 33. The highlight of this abandoned facility is the decommissioned US-made twin-barrel M1 40mm anti-aircraft gun on display, which a signboard tells you “weighs 51,350 pounds, has a range of 11,000 meters, (and can fire) 160 rounds per minute.”
The Andong Tunnel, on the east side of Dongyin Island, is a superlative work of engineering, shooting right through a small mountain and exiting far down below at sea level. The area outside the entrance is protected habitat for the Black-tailed Gull and Black-naped Tern. Inside the tunnel are now-unused barracks, bathrooms, a kitchen, a meeting hall … even a pigsty.
Located at the easternmost tip of Dongyin Island, the brilliant-white Dongyong Lighthouse’s physical setting – stark, lonely beauty. The lighthouse is perched, at first glance seemingly quite precariously, on the precipitous-angle flank of a mountain, the great sea looming before, nothing in view. The mountain’s upper half looms behind and above, nothing of human creation in view. On the dizzyingly steep complex walkways, you look straight down into the sea at your feet. Completed in 1877, designed by an Englishman in 18th-century British style, this lighthouse is Taiwan’s northernmost national heritage site.
A stone-step trail behind the lighthouse leads to the Suicide Cliff, where ocean waves have cut deep into a mountainside, sculpting a vertical 100-meter-high wall on one side. The site is so-named because, according to island lore, pirates infested the local waters during much of the imperial Qing dynasty, and during one attack a Dongyin woman, her husband killed, chose to leap from the cliff rather than surrender her chastity.
A Thread of Sky, a deep and exceedingly narrow sea-erosion trench, splices two giant blocks of granite, towering rock walls facing each other just meters apart. The outer block is being cut from the mainland like a slice of birthday cake. Fallen slabs high up actually connect the cliffs in places. From the bottom only a thin, bright-blue ribbon of sky is seen.

Lin An Tai (林安泰古厝), Rumah Kuno orang Taiwan.
Awalnya Lin An Tai terletak di Daan District. Di sana, konon rumah tradisional ini sempat mengalami pemugaran akibat proyek perluasan jalan dan dipindahkan ke lokasinya sekarang, di Zhongzheng District, tidak jauh dari Keelung River.
