National Taiwan Museum Tour (Taipei, Taiwan)
The National Taiwan Museum / 國立台灣博物館, established in 1908, is the oldest museum in Taiwan. It was founded by the colonial government during Taiwan's period of Japanese rule. The museum is located in Zhongzheng District, Taipei.
Established in 1908, the museum is the oldest in Taiwan. The colonial government of Japan set up the Taiwan Governor Museum (臺灣總督府民政部殖產局附屬博物館), which officially opened on October 24, 1908, to commemorate the inauguration of the North-South Railway. The museum had a collection of over 10,000 items in its initial stages. In 1915, the new building of the museum in Taihoku New Park was inaugurated and became one of the major public buildings during Japanese rule.
Under the Nationalist-rule, the Department of Education of the Taiwan Provincial Government took over the administration of the museum in 1949 and renamed it Taiwan Provincial Museum until 1999. The museum underwent two major renovations in 1961 and 1994 respectively. Since 1999, the museum has been administered by the Central Government and renamed National Taiwan Museum. Throughout the years of war and political transition and after twice being renamed, it stands as the only museum established during the colonial years, which is still in operation on its original site.
For more than a century, the museum has been standing in front of the Taipei Main Station, on the north-south and east-west pivotal crossroads of old Taipei. Its elegant architecture, abundant collections and unique geographical position have made the museum an important landmark. In 1998, the Ministry of the Interior declared the museum a National Heritage. The museum has witnessed Taiwan's history and recorded its natural and humanitarian developments. Through this window, one may catch a glimpse of Taiwan's evolution with regard to the fields of earth sciences, humanitarian developments, zoology, and botany.
The museum maintains its original scale, with five departments — anthropology, earth sciences, zoology, botany and education. The collection features specimens of Taiwan's indigenous animals and plants as well as cultural artifacts. Through its regular exhibitions and special exhibitions, publications and various educational programs, the museum is serving the public as an educational establishment.
Taipei - City Video Guide
In recent decades, Taiwan has transformed itself into one of Asia's premier travel destinations.
It's easy to fall in love with this city. The aroma of street food fills the air. Scooters and bicycles rule the streets. And surrounded by nature, tranquility is never more than a bus ride or hike away.
Start your day at the Longshan Temple, the spiritual heart of Taipei. Taiwan's political heart is the district of Zhongshan, home to the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, 228 Peace Park and the National Taiwan Museum.
Hop on Taipei's excellent MRT and head to the National Palace Museum, home to the world's greatest collection of Chinese art and antiquities.
Taipei's streets are a treasure trove too. Enjoy the blooms at the flower markets. Hunt down bargains in giant department stores and cruise the restaurants in Yong Kang Street.
Rocket to the heavens aboard the high-speed elevators of Taipei 101 and enjoy the spectacular views from one of the world's tallest skyscrapers.
There are plenty of natural vantage points around the city too, such as Elephant Mountain, Maokong Mountain and Mount Qixing.
At sundown, head to the Shilin Night Market to feast, shop and simply enjoy this incredible city.

Taipei Main Station (台北車站) refers to the old downtown region in Taipei City, Taiwan, where different types of public transport systems converge. The Taipei Railway Station is at the center of this region. Prior to the completion of the Taipei Metro link to the railway station, the region was simply known in English as the Taipei Station or the Taipei Railway Station.
The station is located in the Zhongzheng District in Downtown Taipei. The region just south of the station is known as station front because the original train station's main entrance faced south. The region just north of the station is known as the station rear. The station rear region is actually located in the Datong District. The commercial districts around the station are popular with students and commuters, and boast a large collection of bookstores, eclectic businesses targeting students, and cram schools. Because of its location at what is roughly considered the center of Taipei, the station is a popular meeting point for students and tourists.
Taipei Main Station and its surrounding is currently undergoing intensive renovation and redevelopment. Projects include the construction of the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Access MRT System, which is slated for completion by the year 2012, and the iTaipei shopping mall and bus transit area.
Shin Kong Life Tower (Chinese: 新光人壽保險摩天大樓) is one of the tallest buildings in Taiwan at 51 stories 244.15 metres (801.0 ft)[1]. The rose-coloured skyscraper topped by a pyramid stands in Zhongzheng District, Taipei. Its first twelve floors and two underground floors house a Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store; the remaining floors provide office space and serve as headquarters for the Shin Kong Life Insurance Company. The tower stands across Zhongxiao Road from Taipei Main Station near the Asiaworld Department Store. The Shin Kong Life Tower was Taiwan's tallest building when it opened in 1993. In 1997 it was surpassed by the Tuntex 85 Sky Tower in the city of Kaohsiung. Both were overtaken in height by Taipei 101 in 2004.The Shin Kong Life Tower represents a pioneering response by Taiwan's building planners to the challenge of providing high-rise architecture in a demanding environment that could unite the functions of office building, shopping centre and public square. A decade later Taipei 101 offered a superlative realization of the same ambition.
Taiwan is more complicated than I realized! First Day Exploring Taipei
On my first day in Taipei, Taiwan's capital, I visit the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, which is very impressive, just like the square that it is situated on. After visiting the National Museum as well as a few of the creative parks that are located in Taipei, I end the day at the Ningxia Night Market.
You can find the Ningxia Night Market a short walk from the Shuanglian Metro Station. This night market opens up around 5 pm and is open until after midnight; it closes around 1 am. At the Ningxia Night Market you will find a variety of typical Taiwanese snacks and dishes that are worth trying.

EP7 Seeing Taiwan: Shangri La Tainan, Anping Tree House/Old St, Fish Noodles, Hop on hop off bus
These are a few of the things we did in Tainan. I'm so gutted because at the end of our stay in Tainan I think I managed to wipe/format my SD card so I lost 2 days worth of clips :(
Of all the towns and cities we visited in Taiwan, Tainan was my favorite. The food, the people, the culture and the hotel were all amazing!
The highlight of our trip was definitely the meal we had at 度小月 Du Hsiao Yueh Restaurant (no.2 below) and the charcoal grilled peanut brittle wrap with coriander (no.7 below).
So whilst they are not all captured on the videos, here is a list of all the places we visited in Tainan:
Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Tainan
701, Taiwan, Tainan City, East District,
(a beautiful 5* hotel I booked for Chris's birthday)
Du Hsiao Yueh Restaurant
No. 101號, Zhongzheng Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(check out the eating Taiwan video)
Garden Night Market
No. 533號, Section 3, Hai'an Road, North District, Tainan City, Taiwan 704
(check out the eating Taiwan video)
Anping Tree House
708, Taiwan, Tainan City, Anping District
(a warehouse which has been reclaimed by nature)
Anping Old Street
Yanping Street, Anping District, Tainan City, Taiwan 708
(an old shopping street selling traditional foods and bits)
Chihkan Tower
No. 212, Section 2, Minzu Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(an old tower build by the Japanese)
Charcoal Grilled Peanut Brittle Roll
No. 200號, Section 2, Yongfu Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(delicious old school Taiwanese snack where the peanut brittle is heated on a charcoal fire then passed through rollers to be flattened then wrapped around fresh coriander; so good eaten warm)
A Jiang Stir-Fried Eel Yi Noodles
No. 89, Section 3, Minzu Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(only 2 things on the menu, wet or dry stir fried smoked eel noodles)
Shennong Street
Shennong Street, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(really pretty old street with a Japanese vibe; aka Osaka of Taiwan)
Fruit Ice Shop
No. 80號, Zhengxing Street, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(frozen fruit smoothie ice blocks served on half a honeydew/cantaloupe melon... bit over hyped)
Soft serve ice cream
No. 92號, Zhengxing Street, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(famous ice cream chain, popular flavours sell out early. I tried the Taiwanese tea soft serve and it had really good flavour)
Tainan Sightseeing Bus
701, Taiwan, Tainan City, East District
(Tickets can be bought from the first stop outside Tainan main train station. We got promo tickets for TW$300 = £7.50 for the full day which are usually TW$500 = £12.50. They offer 3 routes which go to the main tourist spots but live commentary is only in Chinese and the English is using the pre-recorded audio headphones)
Ta-Tung/Dadong Night Market
No. 276號, Section 1, Linsen Road, East District, Tainan City, Taiwan 701
(pretty much the same vendors as the Garden Night Market because they operate on alternate days though still worth it to get your night market food fix)
Fish Noodles
No. 353號, Section 1, Fuqian Road, West Central District, Tainan City, Taiwan 700
(run by two ladies rushed off their feet; with queues out front. Super cheat eats, really good food. Noodles have a unique chew to them because of the fish meat)
