Taitua Arboretum - Hamilton, Waikato
A mid afternoon walk through the Taitua Arboretum, situated only 5 minutes from the North Island city of Hamilton. This reserve is not very well known, but enjoyed by those who do know it. It is a popular spot for runners and has many interesting spots for quiet relaxation and contemplation.
Fungi at Taitua Arboretum - Hamilton, New Zealand
During the autumn, lots of fungus start to grow. So my mother and I grabbed our cameras and took a nice peaceful walk through the Taitua Arboretum near Hamilton, Waikato, New Zealand. We found lots of fungi - mushrooms and toadstools, some of them growing around tree roots, puffballs (and take a look at the spores inside), polypores (the type that grow on rotten wood and in the sides of trees) ....lots of fun.
Will list the species as I learn what they are:
- Bovista spp: (Puffball)
- Gymnopilus junonius (Laughing Gym, Laughing Cap, Laughing Jim, or the Spectacular Rustgill)
- Favolaschia calocera (Orange Pore Fungus)
Beautiful place to visit (Taitua Arboretum) in Hamilton New Zealand.
New Zealand Vlog 2016 - Trip #6: Hamilton | Taitua Arboretum | Hamilton Gardens
Trip #5 - 24/08/2016:
Didn't go on a trip the previous week as the weather was incredibly bad.
Anyway, this time Tina and I went to Hamilton on a very overcast day to try a popular local takeaway joint, but we didn't find it that great ...
We then went to Taitua Arboretum which was a bit disappointing - perhaps due to the season. She was mean and fed chicken thighs to the chickens there lol.
We then visited Hamilton Gardens which was pretty decent. On the way back, we stopped by Pokeno for ice cream, and had ramen at a highly regarded place in Ponsonby back in Auckland ... but we also didn't relaly find it that great haha.
Hope you enjoyed my vlog!
Stay tuned for next week's episode! :)

If you're looking for a tranquil picnic spot, or an opportunity to escape the bustle of city living, then Taitua Arboretum offers a relaxing retreat.
John and Bunny Mortimer started planting trees and shrubs in 1973 to provide shelter and shade for animals in the area. This continued their life-long passion for growing native and exotic trees and shrubs. By the time it was gifted to the people of Hamilton in 1997, it was recognised as an arboretum and is now open for all to enjoy.
The arboretum has a collection of mature trees covering 20 hectares of open pasture, lakes and woodland gardens which are linked by a network of meandering walking paths. With great views and wonderful bird life, the arboretum is ideal for a family outing or Sunday stroll.
Dogs are welcome at Taitua although they must be kept on a lead at all times. Unfortunately pushbikes are not permitted within the arboretum. Toilets are available beside the car park, along with drinking water.
Opening hours
Taitua Arboretum is open seven days from 8am to half an hour before dusk. Admission is free.
Getting there
From Hamilton follow SH23 west (towards Raglan) and turn left into Howden Road, then left again into Taitua Road. Bus parking is available at the arboretum's entrance.
The Orbiter Bus also stops on Whatawhata Road (just before Melva Street) where you can walk from Tills Lookout at the end of Melva Street to Taitua Arboretum.

If you enjoy walking, this is the place to go. Taitua Arboretum includes a 40 minutes forestry walk through farmland. For those who have the extra energy a 7 minute hike takes you to the lookout. Then wander back to the carpark via the Amenity Walk. They recommend allowing 90 minutes for the whole experience.
Tour of the Taitua Arboretum, the kids decide which way we go!
We let the kids decide whether to go left or right and they love it. They have so little control over their lives that just giving them some power makes them feel good. Try to do this in your local park. We end up exploring areas of the Taitua arboretum we'd never seen before and it was fun for everyone. First we run down a hill to a circle of magical rocks. Than we find cut up tree trunks to walk on. We climb a tree just before having to find shelter from the rain. We fed ducks, find bugs and play in leaves. Nature is amazing! NEW ZEALAND POUTINE: REVISITED | Hamilton, New Zealand
Our last attempt at POUTINE was concocted out of the back of our 2002 Camry Station wagon back in OAMARU. Though not bad, there was PLENTY of room for improvement...
Here's attempt number 2. Learning from our mistakes we stopped trying to make the QUEBEC style cheese curds happen in New Zealand, and instead improvised on the strengths of the many other great varieties of cheese NZ has to offer!
