Travel in Taiwan (2018-11-12)
By Rick Charette
Just outside of Chishang town, on the cycling loop, is one of the rift valley’s most photographed roads, Bolang Dadao (“Mr Brown Avenue”), made famous in a Mr. Brown Coffee commercial and an EVA Air commercial starring Japanese-Taiwanese pop-idol heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro.
The loop also takes you around small Dapo Lake, directly east/southeast of the town. “Chishang” literally means “on the lake.” The tree-surrounded body of water is at the end of the suggested cycle route, and is a pleasant oasis at which to cool off after all your pedaling.
You have two options for getting right out onto the lake, renting a pedal boat or a raft. With the rafts, which have sun-protection roofs, you do your own paddling. You’re also provided with a long bamboo pole that will enable you to push the raft, gondolier-style, into the thick forest of lotus plants on the lake’s east side. Dapo Lake was long used for lotus and water chestnut cultivation.
Many Taiwanese swear that Chishang-area rice is Taiwan’s best, and around the island you’ll see signs above small eateries proclaiming Chishang Biandang. Biandang is the Mandarin Chinese rendering of the Japanese bento, or boxed lunch; the use of Chishang is a promise that Taiwan’s best rice has been used as your boxed-lunch bed. Two main reasons are given for Chishang’s rice quality: the pure, mineral-rich waters from the central mountains distributed by the local irrigation-channel system, and the region’s superior soil, created via silting from two young mountain systems that have sprung up “fresh from the sea,” in geological terms, on the east and west sides.
Near the aforementioned bike-rental operations is the iconic Chishang Riceball Museum, which is in fact a restaurant-cum-museum. The old blue-painted railway cars outside the large two-story wood-façade facility make finding this spot a cinch. The museum/restaurant interior is stuffed with old-time farm-country memorabilia.
Explanation for the passenger carriages parked out front: During Taiwan’s period of Japanese rule, Chishang rice was sent to the Japanese emperor as tribute. Building on this quality, Chishang bento/biandang were developed, which were sold from the local train-station platform to passengers on passing trains – a practice followed around the island. Chishang biandang is the specialty at Chishang Riceball Museum, and the carriages are “outdoor” dining spaces. Each biandang typically contains, at a minimum, a chicken leg (or pork cutlet or fish), a sausage, a soy-stewed egg and beancurd, pickled cabbage, and rice.
Explanation for “riceball” in the museum name: In days past, people would often bring what was called a “riceball” to work for lunch. This was rice, stuffed with such goodies as meat chunks and pickled vegetables, that was usually wrapped in a banana leaf.

My gourmand vote for best coffees in the rift valley goes to Chishang’s No. 9 Gourmet Coffee. The “9” comes from “Provincial Highway No. 9,” and the café is in the very first building as you enter Chishang from the north along said highway. The husband in the owner-duo is an interior designer, and he has let his creative juices flow in his pet project. Enter via a boardwalk over a mini-wetland pond into a quiet oasis of red-brick walls, exposed piping, coffee roasting/grinding machinery, and global-explorer decorations. The various coffees are artworks in themselves, and tasty food treats such as fresh-made waffles and pizza are on the menu. The rooftop-terrace seating gives you an invigorating valley panorama.

A green road of paradise without a wire pole—Mr. Brown Avenue
A small country avenue in Chihshang Township of Taitung County becomes widely popular due to a commercial of Mr. Brown Coffee. It is called a “green road of paradise.” It has vast green rice fields without a wire pole along the roadside. You can truly feel how borderless it is. The avenue has good views for photograph and can bring your mind away from the hustle. Come to experience such pure relief in person.

Taiwan - Taitung County - Guanshan Town Encircling Bicycle Path
The Guanshan Town Encircling Bicycle Path was the first path in Taiwan to be built especially for cyclists. It is 12 kilometers long, and is divided into two sections, namely the Water Section and Mountain Section. The starting point at the Water Section encircles the water park, following the clear, shallow Guanshan Canal and Hongshih River. Along the way, one can see wide, extensive water paddies, which take on different appearances during different seasons. Depending on whichever season it happens to be, you can see the recently planted, soft, green rice seedlings, or waves of rice plants being blown by the wind, or rice plants that are full of grain hanging down, or a golden sea of rapeseed flowers. All these scenes allow one to experience the countryside scenery of Guanshan's four different seasons.

Blessed with stunning landscape and down-to-earth local culture, Taitung is a lovely backpacker's destination on southeastern coast of Taiwan. When not changing bed sheets, selling Taiwan Beer to tourists, or teaching/practicing yoga, I collected some footage here and there, secretly hoping I could become a cool YouTube vlogger someday. So here it begins.

Mr.Browns Coffee Commercial:
Ok, so I spoke a lot about this place being famous from a coffee commercial. In some aspects it is. But I later discovered that amongst the Taiwanese (women..?), it's more appealing due to an EVA Air commercial featuring a pin-up Japanese-Taiwanese actor. So, here it is:

After that adventurous climb, I took an afternoon train from Taitung to Chishang. This was my first time going to this quiet town smack bang in the middle of the Huadong Valley. I wanted to go because I heard it is a great place to ride a bicycle. Chishang is known as the rice capital of Taiwan and has famous landmarks including trees named after local celebrities and an avenue that was made famous after a Mr Brown commercial. 下午我坐火車去池上. 我想要去那裡因為聽說池上是台灣米飯的首都. 那邊也有漂亮的書還有一條路. 那條路很有名因為Mr Brown 以前有很有名的電視廣告. 那個廣告包括那條路.

Taiwan Impression: Chishang
Taitung runs along the south east coast of Taiwan. Taitung county, possessing 3,515 km2 is the 3rd largest county in Taiwan after Hualien County and Nantou County. Taitung County's coastline is 231 km long. Taitung currently has a population of 231,863. The country possess only one registered city, Taitung City. The rest of the county is composed of two towns and thirteen villages.[1]
Due in part to its remote location and isolation by mountains from Taiwan's main population centers, Taitung was the last part of the island to be colonized by Han Chinese immigrants (late 19th century). Throughout the 20th century Taitung remained an economic backwater. Sparsely populated even today, this isolation may have been a blessing in disguise, as Taitung mostly escaped the urbanization and pollution that have come to plague much of the island's lowland areas.
In addition to the area on Taiwan proper, the county includes two major islands, Green Island and Orchid Island. Green Island was home to an infamous penal colony used for political prisoners during the White Terror period of Chinese Nationalist (KMT) rule (from 1947 until the end of martial law in 1987). Orchid Island, home of the Tao people (Taiwanese aborigines closely related to the people of the northern Philippines), has become a major tourist attraction despite the government-operated Taiwan Power Company's controversial use of part of the island as a nuclear waste dump.
