[臺東兒童故事館]的彩繪園地，是舞蹈旅行以來，遇到最燙、最多彩、最不規則的地板。
排練前，書毅以最嚴謹的態度，帶著大家模擬實際尺寸演練，要求舞者們測量距離、自我保護。
演出前，早已熟悉一切，準備以最淋漓盡致的肢體、情緒，獻給在場的大、小朋友。
演出時，舞者們臉上燦爛的笑，勝了陽光的豔、服裝的靚、地板的繽紛。依然燙，不怕！
有觀眾說：「有夢很美，但實現它是辛苦的，你們做到了。」
就這樣，我們以無數次排練、多次走位，完成了這唯一的一場，在[臺東兒童故事館]彩繪園地的演出。

Ready for today's adventure? It's our second day of our trip around Taiwan, and we're heading from Hualien to Taitung! Taitung is definitely known for its beautiful sceneries and its primitive ways of life. My favourite part was definitely being able to feed Cow Moo Moo! So gentle and kind!!! Unlike the goats... hahaha

With hotels difficult to book over long holiday on Taiwan’s east coast, a police precinct in Taitung’s Dulan Village has become a popular tourist destination by offering free camping facilities. This local police precinct has cleared an adjacent piece of land and even offers many basic camping amenities. It goes without saying that the campsite is quite safe which also helps it attract many visitors.The grass is green underneath these coconut palm trees and the area is peaceful and quiet, dotted with many wooden structures for campers. This area is actually the property of a local police precinct. TouristI learned about it from the internet and I have wanted to come for a long time. It’s just my third time camping, and I really enjoy this environment and the police are also quite friendly. TouristAt night it’s very quiet. Over here, when night comes everyone turns off the lights and goes to bed. Over long holiday weekends, hotels and hostels on Taiwan’s east coast are hard to book. Displaced former residents of Hualien’s Yuncui building reflect on their harrowing escape
Many of the former residents of the Yuncui building who survived the earthquake were forced to move to local shelters. Among those that have been evacuated are retirees, who were grateful to have survived despite losing their homes in the harrowing ordeal.Mr. Chang, who resided in the Yuncui building toppled by the Hualien earthquake, thanked volunteers at the temporary shelter where he was staying. I had a flashlight on me, which I used to signal through the window that I was there.66-year-old Mr. Chen lived in the Yuncui building for 22 years, and was used to Hualien’s frequent tremors. Before I was able to escape, all of the furnishings seemed to fly up in the air, and the TV hit me in the head, though I didn’t bleed. That’s when I knew how serious the situation was.Making his bed at the shelter, Mr. Chen reflected on how lucky he was to have escaped alive and relatively unscathed from a quake that seriously shook Hualien and the people living there.

Miracle survivor: Man who cannot swim survives 60 hours stranded at sea in Taiwan

A Taiwanese man has survived after drifting for 60 hours at sea, despite not being able to swim. Tseng Lien-fa had been fishing near Hualien county on Friday when he was swept away by a large wave. The 42-year-old told reporters that he managed to hang onto a piece of floating wood until reaching the shore of Taitung, 75km from where he had been fishing. Tseng has since been treated for dehydration. Report by Sophie Foster.

One of the founding project of Shu-Yi & Dancers is that we take our winner piece,《1875 Ravel & Bolero》,in Sadler's Wells Theatre (England)'s first International Dance Competition Award to tour around Taiwan. There will be no stage or lights during the performace. We attempt to dance all over the public space in Taiwan, and let people unexpectedly meet our dance.

To mark Tzu Chi's 45th anniversary this year, we are bringing you a series of features on the organization's missions, continuing today with an in-depth look at the medical program. Tzu Chi's hospitals around Taiwan are run on the principles of respecting life, and not giving up on any patient. The large and well-equipped facilities offer complete and professional medical care, but with a very human touch. The first general hospital opened in Hualien, on the east coast of Taiwan, followed by other branches in places that lacked healthcare resources. To reach out to isolated rural and mountainous areas, Tzu Chi organizes regular free mobile clinics. And of course, in the event of a natural disaster, doctors, nurses and volunteers quickly form emergency medical teams to treat the victims of earthquakes, floods and landslides. But we start today's feature by meeting a road accident victim, whose life was saved at Tzu Chi General Hospital.

In January 1996, Huang Xiuzheng was out riding her motorcycle when she was run over by a truck, and taken to Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital.
Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital superintendent, Jian Shouxin : When Xiuzheng came to the hospital she wasn't taken to emergency, but straight to the operating theater, because her condition was very very serious. We couldn't waste time in emergency, and had to rush her to theater. Why? Because some of the wounds on her abdomen were still bleeding profusely, and her blood pressure was almost untraceable. She was very very anemic.
Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital patient, Huang Xiuzheng : When Dr. Jian saw me, he was already wearing his surgical gown. He told me, Xiuzheng, you are safe now, don't be afraid. After he told me that, I thought, I really shouldn't be afraid, and let him anesthetize me.
Xiuzheng was in hospital for eight months, and in two years received 17 operations. Her case is representative of all the life-saving procedures at Hualien.

In 1999 Hualien Yuli Hospital opened up, and the next year the Guanshan branch threw a new lifeline to the Taitung area.
Soon Dalin in Chiayi, Xindian in Taipei, and Tanzi in Taichung soon had Tzu Chi hospitals.
In the hospital lobbies, the mural of the Buddha caring for the sick represents the people-centered approach at Tzu Chi hospitals.

As the network expanded: points, grew into lines, and then full coverage, as Tzu Chi's mobile clinics went into the countryside.

After graduating from the top medical school in Taiwan, Dr. Qiu Zhaorong decided to stay in rural Guanshan to serve local indigenous people. Coming from Myanmar, as a child she always wanted to emulate Mother Theresa.
Xiama villager, Qiu Yongfu : We treat Dr. Qiu with great respect. When she comes, we are very respectful. when she's here, our drinkers always hide their bottles, because she'll always scold us. She's like a protective god, a godess of the land.

After devoting her life to the health of indigenous villagers in the Taitung area, Dr. Qiu died of cancer of the liver in 2008. She donated her body to Tzu Chi University to pass on the baton to the next generation of medical students.

In the aftermath of the September 21 earthquake of 1999, Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital formed a medical rescue team, led by the superintendent at the time, Dr. Jian Shouxin, 12 doctors, 28 nurses went to the Taichung area to save lives.

After Typhoon Morakot in 2009, the Tzu Chi medical mission executive director, Dr. Lin Junlong, led a team with Tzu Chi International Medical Association doctors into the Linbian disaster area.

Apart from disaster relief, Tzu Chi hospital doctors and volunteers regularly give up their weekends to visit needy patients at their homes.

Huang Xiuzheng says the care and treatment she received in hospital helped her make a miraculous recovery. This is what she had to say in a thank you letter to superintended, Jian Shouxin.

Tzu Chi Hospital gave me the feeling that all the staff were very nice, and helped me slowly get back on my feet again. Tzu Chi didn't just save my life. It gave me a lifeline, which was a feeling of great security.

Walking away from the highway, we enter a wondrous world with thickets of wild hibiscus plants. Soon I spot the greenhouses of the farm to the right. Entering the grounds, we find the smiling owner, Chiu Shun-jun, brewing Oolong tea. He gets up to greet us, showing us to a wooden table from where you can peer into the first of the greenhouses. Vines droop from the transparent netting-roof of the greenhouse, forming a green arch from which clusters of brilliant yellow cherry tomatoes and stark-hue purple peppers dangle.
A retired military doctor from a Hakka family that lived in Dongshi, the district neighboring Shigang to the east, Chiu started helping friends using hydroponic systems to grow vegetables nearly 30 years ago, before opening his own farm. In the beginning he sold his produce to supermarkets in central Taiwan, but later he realized that operating a leisure farm was more profitable. “I also like to talk to people!” he chuckles.
Approximately 70 to 80 percent of You and Me’s earnings come from tourists. A cover fee of NT$100 is charged for fruit and vegetable picking, with additional charges for every 600 grams of produce picked.
We visit at the end of winter, during the tomato and pepper season, and are to be shown around by Hung Min-fang, a young woman who approaches us wearing a distinctive checkered apron and pushing a cart full of colorful peppers. Noticing our wide-eyed reactions, she explains that six varieties of peppers are grown on the farm: red, green, orange, yellow, purple, and white.
The farm has several greenhouses. Hung leads us into one of the houses, and shows us tomatoes and peppers that have been planted on raised beds, arranged in three tiers. Above the beds are thin black rods used for watering the plants according to a set timer.
“We’re always experimenting with different crops,” Hung tells us. She shows us some of their other winter crops, including corn from a small field behind one of the greenhouses, along with Taiwanese basil, figs, and blueberries, which are planted in pots. There are also apples, turnips, and – most amusing – giant-sized Taiwanese cabbage that are so big and heavy that I would definitely struggle to carry one by myself. Good thing, I think to myself, that I won’t be obliged to do any veggie hauling today as part of my farm experience.
Hung brings out a small red shopping basket, scissors, and a traditional-style Taiwanese conical straw hat. It’s time to pick cherry tomatoes! There are a number to choose from – yellow, red, light green, and dark purple. “The yellow and red ones are the sweetest,” Hung says. She describes how to tell ripe ones from ones that aren’t ready; basically, there shouldn’t be any dark-green coloring on the skin.
I put on the big hat and clutch the basket with one hand, feeling a little silly, like a farmhand depicted in an illustrated book. I’m not as deft with my fingers as Hung is, so I use the scissors to slowly and delicately snip red and yellow cherry tomatoes from their stems, choosing plump-looking ones and standing on my toes to reach tomatoes dangling below the roof.
Ten minutes into the picking, my fingers are a dusty shade of green. I think that maybe I’m not cut out for farm life. “Don’t worry – that’s normal!” Hung laughs reassuringly. We rinse the cherry tomatoes with water and sample a few. I prefer the yellow ones, as they are less acidic than their red counterparts and a pleasant sort of sweet.
The rest of the cherry tomatoes are packed neatly in a tiny, transparent plastic box for me to take home. Outside, a dark-grey cloud cover has settled in, and the tall palms and scraggly banana trees have become gnarly silhouettes. Like curtains coming down on an afternoon play, it’s the perfect end to our visit to Shigang, a place that’s both urban and rural, both tame and wild, and where the people are welcoming – and their tomatoes are lip-smacking good.
