Taiwan High Speed Rail Nangang Station opens; expected to ease congestion in Taipei Main Station
Taiwan High Speed Rail commenced service at its new northern terminus in Nangang early this morning, with a first departure at 6:15 am. The expansion, which now makes Nangang Station a hub for three different rail systems, is expected to alleviate rush hour crowding at Taipei Main Station. At the official opening of Taiwan High Speed Rail Nangang Station, many queued for tickets so they could be the first to experience the new railway link.PassengerI was here at 5:00 am. This is my second trip. The first was on the inaugural train, and the second was a trip with friends. I think the people with Taiwan High Speed Rail have a very good attitude when it comes to service and when I left the station I even received this commemorative mug. PassengerThe first stop on the Taiwan High Speed Rail - that means good luck for us Nangang residents. The opening of Nangang Station in the Taiwan High Speed Rail system marks the convergence of three rail systems at the station – the Taiwan High Speed Rail, MRT and TRA. Aside from the additional convenience it will bring to Nangang residents, the new stop is also expected to alleviate congestion at Taipei Main Station.Victor LiuTaiwan High Speed Rail Corporation ChairmanWe hope that in the future around one-third of passengers currently using Taipei Main Station can be moved to Nangang Station. The opening of Taiwan High Speed Rail Nangang Station will not only see local real estate prices rocket upwards, but is also likely to attract enormous business investment to the area.

Taiwan High Speed Rail - Taipei to Taichung HD (2017)
Taiwan High Speed Rail (abbreviated THSR or HSR) is a high-speed rail line that runs approximately 349.5 km (217 mi), along the west coast of Taiwan, from the national capital Taipei to the southern city of Kaohsiung. With construction managed by a private company, Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation (THSRC), which also operates the line, the total cost of the project was US$18 billion. At the time it was built, this was one of the world's largest privately funded rail construction schemes. The system is based primarily on Japan's Shinkansen technology.
The line opened for service on 5 January 2007, with trains running at a top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph) from Nangang to Zuoying in as little as 105 minutes, reaching almost 90% of Taiwan's population. Most intermediate stations on the line lie outside the cities served; however, a variety of transfer options, such as free shuttle buses, conventional rail, and metros have been constructed to facilitate transport connections.
Ridership initially fell short of forecasts, but grew from fewer than 40,000 passengers per day in the first few months of operation to over 129,000 passengers per day in June 2013. Daily passenger traffic reached 130,000 in 2014, well below the forecast of 240,000 daily passengers for 2008. The system carried its first 100 million passengers by August 2010 and over 200 million passengers had taken the system by December 2012., followed by 400 million by December 2016.
In the initial years of operation, THSRC accumulated debt due to high depreciation charges and interest, largely due to the financial structure set up for the private company. In 2009, THSRC negotiated with the government to change the method of depreciation from depending on concessions on rights to ridership. At the same time, the government also started to help refinance THSRC's loans to assist the company so it could remain operational and profitable. In 2015, the government injected NT$30 billion as a financial bailed out, boosting the government's stake to about 64% from about 37%. The government also extended the rail concession from 35 years to 70 years and terminated the company’s build-operate-transfer business model.

Miaoli County residents say Taiwan High Speed Rail noise is causing insomnia and mental di...
Residents of Miaoli’s County’s Tongsiao Township’s Chengbei Village are upset by the lack of soundproofing measures undertaken by the Taiwan High Speed Rail. Residents complain passing trains are so loud it is causing them to suffer from long-term insomnia and mental health disorders. Recently, the EPA decided the railway should pay compensation of NT$8.33mn to residents living nearby. However, the high speed rail is challenging this judgment and has filed a suit with the Miaoli District Court. The sound of this passing high speed rail train is causing many residents to complain. As the train exits the tunnel there is a booming sound which is in excess of 80 dB. What’s worse is this kilometer long bridge doesn’t have any soundproofing walls, which may be a factor behind the noise complaints emanating from Chengbei Village. Chan Chun-wangChenbei Village ChiefThis area is a basin and the sound may resonate and cause an echo.As many elderly and children go to bed early, they are disturbed by trains that pass after 11pm each evening. This has led many to develop insomnia and mental disorders. Chengbei ResidentIt’s so loud that I cannot sleep. I even get up and walk around in the middle of the night as many people have almost gone mad here. From the start of the high speed rail in 2007, some 200 residents of Chengbei have complained about noise and vibrations caused by passing trains, launching a petition years ago asking for NT$42 million in damages. Last month, the EPA ruled the high speed rail must compensate residents a total of NT$8.33 million. The decision is being disputed by the high speed rail who says noise caused by passing trains only measures 70 dB and is within the 80db standards required by class 2 control areas. For this reason, the railway didn’t install soundproof walls and the reason why it will appeal the ruling in a local district court.
