Taiwan's Hot Air Balloon Festival (Luye Gaotai, Taitung)
The Taiwan International Balloon Festival has become one of Taiwan’s most popular annual festivals in recent years. The Travel Channel, a US-based cable channel, has described it as one of “12 Amazing Hot Air Balloon Festivals Around the World,” alongside such major international hot-air-balloon events as the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and Saga International Balloon Fiesta. The Taiwan festival is staged each summer at Taitung County’s Luye Highland. Weather permitting, the hot-air balloons also fly throughout the rest of the year, as we found out on a recent trip to southeastern Taiwan.
The eighth Taiwan International Balloon Festival will begin on June 30th, 2018. The Event has become very popular since the first fiesta in 2011 which had the rest of Taiwan following its footsteps. It is now one of the main events in Taiwan. The festival is scheduled with light shows, balloon ride experience, and balloon flying shows. The hot air balloon tour ride, which started in 2013, has become a regular activity throughout the whole year starting from 2014. The ride is around 30-40 min, with a 360 view of Taitung’s finest mountain views.
Taitung County is known for its picturesque mountains, dramatic coastline, lush greenery, clean air, and consistently pleasant weather conditions. One of its geological wonders is the East Rift Valley, which runs between the Central and Coastal mountain ranges from south of Hualien City to north of Taitung City.
Luye Gaotai is a popular place for grass skating and paragliding. With an elevation of 350 meters, this highland area has a unique geographical condition perfect for these activities. If you enjoy speed, you must try the fun and thrill of grass skating from the top of the hill.
Getting there:
From Taitung Station:
Take a train to Luye Railway Station; shuttle buses are available at the station during the festival period; alternatively, take a taxi to the Luye Highland.
Costs:
During the festival, 5~7-minute tethered hot-air balloon rides cost NT$500 per person. At other times of the year these rides are NT$1,000. Free (untethered) flights (during the festival and at other times) lasting about 30 minutes are priced NT$$9,000 (video footage and champagne toast at the end included). Entrance to the festival is free. Advance booking is required outside the festival period; groups of 20 or more are required for the tethered flights, just 2 or more for the free flights.

The annual Taiwan International Balloon festival runs all summer long. Luye Highland in Taitung County, warmly welcomes everyone to enjoy a memorable experience.
This year our Oh bear balloon, the mascot from the Tourism Bureau, is taking part in the Twente Ballooning in the Netherlands from August 21st to August 24th.

The 2013 Taiwan International Balloon Fiesta Taitung
The 2013 Taiwan International Balloon Fiesta is underway! Celebrating its third year, the fiesta is taking you for a hot air balloon ride overlooking the entire Taitung county!
Taiwan is an island with a diverse topography. With its large and flat terrain, Taitung is the one and only location ideal for hot air ballooning in Taiwan. Apart from the amazing flying experience, the breathtaking panoramic view is what attracts tourists to come year after year. With its third anniversary this year, the fiesta has come a long way from having no pilot and no self-owned balloon in the first year to 2 balloons and 5 pilots in the second year. Currently, there are 7 pilots and 5 balloons in the crew, and a business license has also been successfully obtained. The best part of the festival is that it provides people in Taiwan a place to enjoy a hot air balloon ride without having to travel abroad. We hope that our overseas compatriots can incorporate Taitung into their annual trip back to Taiwan to take in the unforgettable view of Taitung from above.

Taitung’s hot air balloon festival to kick off June 29 | Taiwan News | RTI
The Taiwan International Balloon Festival will kick off June 29 at the Luye Highland in Taitung County. This year’s theme is “children’s dream park”. In addition to the Tourism Bureau’s mascot Oh Bear, there will be hot air balloons shaped like a range of cartoon characters and animals. As many as 40 hot air balloons from around the world will be there.
