Taj Ul Masajid translates as The Crown of Mosques. The construction of the mosque was initiated during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar by Nawab Shah Jahan Begum of Bhopal and continued to be built by her daughter Sultan Jahan Begum, till her lifetime. The mosque was not completed due to lack of funds, and after a long lay-off after the War of 1857, construction was resumed in 1971 by great efforts of Allama Mohammad Imran Khan Nadwi Azhari of Bhopal. Taj-ul-Masajid is a mosque situated in Bhopal, India. The name is also spelt as Taj-ul-Masjid. However the correct name is Taj-ul-Masajid and not Taj-ul-Masjid. Masajid means mosques and Taj-ul-Masajid literally means Crown Among Mosques. It is the largest mosque in India and one of the largest mosques in Asia.
History
The construction of the Mosque was initiated during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar by Nawab Shah Jahan Begum (1844–1860 and 1868–1901) of Bhopal (Wife of Baqi Mohammad Khan) and continued to be built by her daughter Sultan Jahan Begum, till her lifetime. The mosque was not completed due to lack of funds, and after a long lay-off after the War of 1857, construction was resumed in 1971 by great efforts of Allama Mohammad Imran Khan Nadwi Azhari and Maulana Sayed Hashmat Ali Sahab of Bhopal. The construction was completed by 1985 and the entrance (eastern) gate was renovated grandly using ancient motifs from circa 1250 Syrian mosques by the contribution of the Emir of Kuwait to commemorate the memory of his departed wife.
Architecture
The Mosque has a pink facade topped by two 18-storey high octagonal minarets with marble domes. The Mosque also has three huge bulbous domes, an impressive main hallway with attractive pillars and marble flooring resembling Mughal architecture the likes of Jama Masjid in Delhi and the huge Badshahi Mosque of Lahore. It has a courtyard with a large tank in the centre. It has a double-storeyed gateway with four recessed archways and nine cusped multifold openings in the main prayer hall. The Quibla wall in the prayer hall is carved with eleven recessed arches and has fine screens of trellis work. The massive pillars in the hall hold 27 ceilings through squinted arches of which 16 ceilings are decorated with ornate petaled designs.
Azan at Taj-ul-Masajid, Bhopal
The azān (call to prayer) at Bhopal's Taj-ul-Masajid, January 14, 2014.
The adhān, or azān as pronounced in India, is the Islamic call to worship, recited, (or rather sung), by the muezzin at prescribed times of the day.
Taj-ul-Masajid, Crown of Mosques is the largest Mosque in India, and one of the largest in Asia. Construction was started in the 1800s by Nawab Shah Jahan Begum of Bhopal during a fascinating period when Bhopal was ruled by women.
Between 1819 and 1926, Bhopal was ruled by four women, the Nawab Begums of Bhopal. Qudsia Begum the first female ruler, was succeeded by her only daughter Sikandar Begum, who in turn was succeeded by her only daughter, Shah Jehan Begum. The rule of the Nawab Begums gave the city its waterworks, railways, a postal system and several architectural landmarks.
Nawab Shah Jehan Begum
(see photo below, and here:
Born in Islamnagar near the city of Bhopal, Nawab Shah Jahan Begum was the only surviving child of Sikandar Begum and her husband Jahangir Mohammed Khan. She was recognized as ruler of Bhopal in 1844 at the age of six, however, as she was a minor, her mother ruled as regent. Shah Jahan succeeded her mother as Nawab Begum of Bhopal in 1868. She is credited with improving the tax revenue system, raising the salaries of her soldiers, modernizing the military, building a dam and an artificial lake, improving the efficiency of the police force and undertaking the first census after the state suffered two plagues. To balance the state budget, she reportedly commissioned the farming of opium.
A scholar, Nawab Shah Jahan Begum wrote several books in Urdu. She was instrumental in initiating the construction of the Taj-ul-Masajid. She died before the Mosque could be completed, and work was later abandoned, only to resume in 1971, and was finally completed in 1985.
How I ended up there
On January 14th, 2014, I had been spending the day with former Union Carbide official photographer Kamlesh Jaimini, at his photography studio. I had gone to meet him hoping he would show me some of his rarely seen photographs of the aftermath of the Bhopal gas disaster. We ended up discussing music (I’m a tabla player, and he introduced me to his daughter, who is a sitarist) and photography, culminating in a tour of the photo studio both he and his father ran, filled with thousands of stunning 120mm black and white negatives.
My portrait of Kamlesh Jaimini:
Drawers full of negatives:
120mm negative, inverted:
Mr Jaimini had some errands to run, and asked me to return that evening, then graciously drove me back to my hotel on his scooter ( I hopped in a cab, and headed to the Taj-ul-Masajid, where I shot this video, and took all the photos except the last one (smiling girl in the black hijab), which was shot in December 2014, upon my return to Bhopal with my band Autorickshaw, to perform our commemorative/fundraising song City of Lakes, on December 3rd, the 30th anniversary of the disaster.
To wrap up the Kamlesh Jaimini story, I returned to his studio after visiting the Mosque, and viewed his photos of that terrible night, and heard his story…in part: he was photographing at a hospital, and as the casualties increased, he eventually set his camera aside to help the overwhelmed hospital staff and doctors, but not before capturing some horrifying, powerful images, some of which are in my City of Lakes video here:
more of my photographs of Bhopal and her people can be seen here:
About the video/audio:
Shot with a Canon T4i (the sunset time-lapse at the end included, with the camera propped-up on whatever I could find in my bag and pockets at the time), while I was peppered with questions by a small group of kids, a couple of who appear in the video. The sometimes jello-like effect is he result of video stabilization, which is less offensive to my eye than the un-stabilized footage.
The audio is untouched, un-processed in post production. That stunning reverb you hear is authentic, and the muezzin has a fabulously gritty moment at the end of a phrase, at 1:45.
