TAKACHIHO GORGE, JAPAN (Paradise of Japan)
I had been traveling almost all around Japan and finally came to an in credible place in the south part of the country. The Takachio Gorge looks like a paradise and I had to explore more of the amazing nature.
Takachio Gorge is located in Takachio, a city with 12000 people. There are incredible mountains surrounding the city, but even more incredible views down in the valley.

Takachiho Gorge Miyazaki - 高千穂峡
We travel to Takachiho Gorge Miyazaki in South Japan. This is a cinematic travel video. This video is dedicated to the Japan-Australia blog. John who runs the site rarely gets a chance to feature south japan and Miyazaki in his blog.
Find the blog here:
He will feature these locations in the coming weeks so stay tuned!
First location we hit in this video is the Tunnel station where hundreds of barrels of Japanese Sake is stored to ferment. Then we go to Takachiho Gorge which is a famous landmark in Miyazaki. It's famous for it's beautiful natural rock formations and waterfalls. They offer travelers the chance to row boats down the gorge. It was a fun time, I really enjoy rowing boats.

Steeped in myth and legend, Takachiho has been known since ancient times as a sacred ground where the gods descended to earth. The area is also famous for yokagura, sacred dance rituals reenacting the legends, which are performed in the fall and early winter.
The sheer gorge running through a basin surrounded by steep green mountains is the masterpiece of a magnificently variegated terrain that presents lively beauties with the changing seasons.
Partway along the gorge is the 17 meter high Minainotaki waterfall cascading down to the river below, and it is truly majestic to see the waterfall against a backdrop of dense green leaves and the surrounding gray cliffs.
There are two way to enjoy the gorge from different places. The first is from below which is done by rowing down the river. Rental boats are available at the south end of the gorge, and the water is calm and easy to navigate. This route offers a close- up view of the cliffs and waterfall and is highly recommended.
Boat Rental
Hours:8:30 -17:00 (departures until 16:30)
Closed: No closing days (except when water levels are high)
Admission:2000 yen per 30 min boat rental (max 3 people)
The second one, from above, is done by walking the paved path that runs along the edge of the gorge. There are beautiful views all along the way. The path has some points on the trail where you can look practically straight down to the river below. The trail continues for approximately one kilometer, eventually leading to the Takachiho Shrine.
There are several other things to enjoy around the southern end of the gorge including a freshwater aquarium, a stocked fishing pond and a few restaurants and souvenir shops. The gorge is illuminated from the end of July to the first of September until 22:00.
Access Information
The Takachiho Gorge is located about a kilometer from the Takachiho Shrine along a paved walking path, just outside the town center.
By walk
From the Takachiho Bus Center it takes about 40 minutes to get there.
By Bus
Bs operates between the Takachiho Bus Center and the gorge (5 minutes, 150 yen), however, it is rather infrequent (4 buses on weekdays, 2 buses on weekends
GORGE and GODS - Takachiho, Miyazaki
Takachiho is a town in northern Miyazaki. One of the things that makes Takachiho famous is its gorge. The sheer cliffs, lined with waterfalls, lead into beautiful turquoise waters. The cliffs are made of slow forming volcanic basalt columns. I guess thanks goes to Mount Aso for this one.
Takachiho is also centred around some Japanese myths. Takachiho is home to the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu. Amano Iwato Shrine is dedicated to the cave that Amaterasu hid in to avoid her brother. The path near the shrine leads down to Amano Yasukawara. This is the cave where the gods and goddesses met to discuss their strategy of luring Amaterasu out of hiding. There is another shrine here and thousands of stacked rocks around it. (I felt this was a little too complicated to explain in the video especially since I'm not well versed in Japanese mythology. Though this trip has sparked an interest.)
I really loved my little day trip to Takachiho. This was on my list as soon as I found out where I'd be living in Japan. It also made me want to explore more of Miyazaki Prefecture so hopefully I get back there soon.
Much love and happy travels

Takachiho Gorge, Fun Walking 高千穂峡
Takachiho Gorge is a beautiful place featuring the emerald green waters of the Gokase River and its surrounding sheer cliffs. A rapid cooling of ancient lava created these steep walls.
Takachiho is a town of myths and legends. And Takachiho Gorge is as beautiful as the world of the Gods.
Thousands of years ago, there was no water here. Then a God transferred water from the world of the Gods to this spot. These beautiful waterfalls appeared here at that time.

On winter weekends, people gather to watch all-night performances of Yokagura (night dances). These 33 dances reenact the story of when Amaterasu (the Sun Goddess) hid herself in a cave. Every night, a shortened version of these dances can be seen at the Takachiho Shrine. In this dance, the god Totori prepares to move the rock from the entrance of the cave where Amaterasu is hiding.

Takachiho - Land of Legends - JVT 2012-02
Takachiho, a small town in the mountains of northern Miyazaki, is the legendary home of some of Japan's most ancient myths. The landscape around Takachiho is filled with sacred spots, the best known being Gokase-gawa Gorge, a mysteriously beautiful ravine of sheer volcanic cliffs cutting through deep forest. Performed in Takachiho for over 800 years, the Kagura dance portrays the stories of the old gods, backed by the music of traditional drums and flutes.

Trip report: Kita Kyushu, Yame, Arita, Takachiho, Miyazaki, Yanagawa
Take a look at these pics taken by Kyushu Journeys clients in May 2018. You can see photos of Kita Kyushu, Yame, Arita, Takachiho, Miyazaki, Yanagawa and Obama.
Big thanks to our lovely clients Lionel and Sue for sending us these great photos and even a video of them being serenaded!
They visited Kita Kyushu and were lucky enough to get the timing exactly right for wisteria blooming at Kawachi Wisteria Garden. It's always hit and miss (who can predict nature?) but as you can see they were bang on time.
You can probably tell from the video that these guys love their food and drink! You can see them doing a sake (Japanese rice wine) tasting which we arranged for them at an historic sake brewery here on Kyushu. They were lucky enough to be escorted on a free of charge private tour. It's a great chance to see how Japanese sake is still produced at a traditional brewery, to do some tasting and then pick up a bottle or two of the one you fancy.
You can see we included (at their request) several places serving the highest quality Wagyu beef from Kyushu. They specifically asked us to include in their itinerary a chance to sample the renowned 'Miyazakigyu' (highest quality beef produced in the Kyushu prefecture of Miyazaki).
They also requested to see some of Kyushu's stunning countryside Up. On the video you can see a couple of photos of the picturesque Takachiho Gorge, the beautiful wide open spaces of Aso, and a wonderful sunset in Obama (that's the town, not the president!).
I told you these guys love their food, right? In addition to all the beef, you can see that they spent time in a teppanyaki restaurant, experienced a traditional Japanese charcoal barbecue and Kyushu's most famous dish - Ramen noodles!
Not only did they get their timing right for wisteria blooming but also for the famous Arita Pottery Fair. It's held for one week in May and despite its popularity we arranged for them to stay in a hotel right in the centre of the action!
At the end of the video you can see they took a romantic ride down the river serenaded by the boatman. Beat that Venice!
If you want us to arrange a customised Kyushu itinerary get in touch. Best to contact us before you book your flight so we can discuss the best time of year to come based on the kind of activities you enjoy.
