【English】May 2nd Fujiwara Festival - from Gikeido to Hiraizumi Station
On the second day of the Spring Fujiwara Festival, the memorial service for Minamoto no Yoshitsune was held at Takadachi Gikeido.
While Sutras were chanted in front of the Gikeido Hall and the Yoshitsune pagoda, cherry petals were blowing all around.

The history of Hiraizumi
Hiraizumi established by Oshu Fujiwara clan reached its peak at the era of the third lord, Hidehira.
The Genpei War occurred at the time when West Japan was ruled by Taira no Kiyomori, while East Japan by Minamoto no Yoritomo and Oshu by Fujiwara no Hidehira.
Minamoto no Yoshitsune led to win the war, but his elder brother, Yoritomo became suspicious of him because of his triumphs, and he got into a desperate situation. Seeking for safe haven, he fled to Hiraizumi where Hidehira lived and also he had spent his time from 16 to 22 years old.
Takadachi is said to be the place where Yoshitune stayed in his later years. Remembering the hero who died young, the statue of Yoshitsune wearing Samurai armor is enshrined in Gikeido Hall constructed in 1683 by the lord of Sendai clan, Date Tsunamura.
The wooden statues of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Musashibo Benkei are housed at Benkeido Hall in the precinct of Chuson-ji. The 186 cm statue is said to be a life-size of Benkei. It depicts his death in a standing position due to confronting many enemies to protect Yoshitsune.
Many historical figures and intellectuals visited here as they were attracted by the historical romance, such as the peace principle of Oshu Fujiwara clan and the tragic general, Minamoto no Yoshitsune. It could be a way to enjoy the history of Hiraizumi by paying attention to the stone monuments remaining in the precincts of temples and the town.

Sightseeing by bicycle in Hiraizumi, World Heritage site!
Hiraizumi is the smallest town in Iwate Prefecture in size.
Since the attractive tourist spots are concentrated in the small town, Hiraizumi is a perfect place for sightseeing by bicycle!
In this program, we will guide you along a nice cycling route.
First off, let’s rent a bicycle at a rental cycle shop ‘Gold-Rent Hiraizumi’ or ‘Swallow Tour’, both located near Hiraizumi Station. Along with regular bicycles, electric assist bicycles are available.
First place to visit is Yanagi no Gosho Site. It has a historic park of remains and a museum where many archeological objects unearthed there are on display.
Muryoko-in Ato and Takadachi Gikeido Hall are located along the route from Yanagi no Gosho to Chuson-ji.
Gikeido Hall is said to be the place where Minamoto no Yoshitsune died.
Crossing a railroad and a national road, we reached Chuson-ji. Please park your bicycle at a designated area.
There are many restaurants and souvenir shops. It is a good place to have a lunch break!
At Hiraizumi Cultural Heritage Center, easy-to-understand overview of Hiraizumi’s history is displayed.
With deeper understanding of Hiraizumi’s history, let’s head for Kanjizaio-in Ato and Motsu-ji.
It takes about three hours to tour along this route from the train station.
Please enjoy the sightseeing of Hiraizumi, feeling the breeze of Pure Land.

【English】All About Hiraizumi#5 The Spring Fujiwara Festival, Part 1

The Spring Fujiwara Festival was held from May 1st to the 5th.
Thanks to the good weather, many tourists came to visit Hiraizumi during the festival.
On the 1st, memorial service was solemnly held at Chuson-ji and Motsu-ji, remembering the prosperous era of Oshu Fujiwara Clan which established the golden culture of Hiraizumi.
At Chuson-ji, following the service, the Children’s Parade was held as usual. 70 children, wearing court costumes of the Heian Era, paraded from the main hall to Konjiki-do, adding the colors to the festival. Wearing the costumes they were not accustomed to, the children seemed a little nervous.
On the 2nd, Memorial Service for Lord Minamoto no Yoshitsune was held by the monks of Motsu-ji at Takadachi Gikeido,remembering the young lord who passed away at this place.
On the 3rd, the main event of the Spring Fujiwara Festival ‘The Lord Minamoto no Yoshitsune Eastern Flight Procession’ was held.
It is a recreation of the scene Hidehira and his family warmly welcomed Yoshitsune when he was hunted by his brother Yoritomo and arrived at Hiraizumi. This year, actor Ryo Yoshizawa played the role of Yoshitsune. The gorgeous parade of participants, totaling 93, fascinated the tourists.
352,000 people visited Hiraizumi to see the Spring Fujiwara Festival this year, exceeding the number of the visitors of last year by 13,000.
Scenes from the 4th and the 5th days of the festival will be released in the next program.

自奧州藤原氏滅亡500年的1689年6月29日,俳句詩人松尾芭蕉探尋奧州小徑而來到了平泉。
在義經臨終之地高館所作的著名俳句。
「夏日草淒涼 ,昨日功名古戰場 一枕夢黃粱」
從那看到的風景並不是藤原氏所建造的榮華,而是想起被戰亂奪去生命的人們而流下的淚水。
在芭蕉造訪平泉的6月29日舉行了平泉芭蕉祭全國俳句大會。
本次大會為第53屆, 110名參加者不畏陰雨前來參加。
在作為會場的中尊寺,全山僧侶們進行了芭蕉翁追善法要。
在芭蕉俳句大會,除了來自全國的事前投稿應徵部門之外,還有僅限當日參加者投稿的當日投稿部門。
至截止的數小時間,隨處可見彷彿芭蕉翁一樣懷念，平泉書寫俳句的參加者們。在當日投稿的俳句中還有很多以今年決定的「平泉日」為題的詩句。
今年為作為傳統文化而舉行的俳句大會以及加深對平泉的關心與理解,岩手縣內的很多中.小學生也參加了此次活動。
今年在這個季節將會舉行平泉潑水神龕!!
圍繞毛越寺、中尊寺和町內的神龕啟行接受清水洗禮!
沿途準備的清水,可以自由使用,大家盡情地向神龕潑灑清水吧!
