An entertaining and educational concert with shamisen virtuoso Sato Michiyoshi. Sato is an award-winning performer of Tsugaru-jamisen, a dynamic style of music played on a three-stringed Japanese instrument called a shamisen, which dates to the early 19th century. Sato’s performance includes everything from traditional folk songs to modern compositions, which exemplify the struggle between his own creativity and the legacy of his father Michihiro Sato, considered a “shamisen master,” one of the most beloved Tsugaru-jamisen artists in history. This performance took place on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Kalamazoo Public Library, and celebrates a partnership with the Soga Japan Center at Western Michigan University. kpl.gov
Meet The Maker: Homeware by the hands of Takahashi McGil | The Shorely
Take a step inside Takahashi McGil's studio and become fixated with the wood workings of this local husband and wife duo. The earthy tones and pops of green seen in the studio should be like camouflage in rural surrounds of Cockington Court, but it's hard to hide such spectacular homeware, each piece is crafted to stand out perfection.
For our second installment of Meet The Maker, we meet Cockington Court's resident homeware studio - Takahashi McGil - a hybrid brand of the couple's names, Mark Mcgilvary and Kaori Takahashi.
This creative coupling both studied Fine Art before they kindled their mutual love for making wood-based homeware, inspired by the temples, houses and furniture of Japan. Every piece in their collection is truly unique and determined by natures raw materials, as Mark Mcgilvary explains:
It's almost like the wood dictates what we make. If we find a lot of nice thick wood, then we'll suddenly make a lot of nice pots. - Mark Mcgilvary
Takahashi McGil mix locally sourced wood from Dartmoor and Somerset with pieces that have travelled from as far as America to make large scale furniture and decorative pots, boards and trays.
They select beautiful hardwood slabs that have been slowly air dried over a number of years, maximising the natural beauty of the wood by incorporating knots, voids and natural cracks that occur during the drying of the wood. The use of a live edge on some of their pieces is a beautiful nod to the mighty tree from which it has come.
Perhaps what makes their homeware like no other we've seen of late is the use of both Japanese and Western approaches and tools combined with their inherent design talent and love of the wood. This is homeware from the heart made by intensely skilled hands right at the heart of Torbay's great making community.
Go see them! Takahashi McGil have been selected to exhibit at The Contemporary Craft Festival (8-10 June, Bovey Tracey) and you can catch them at Cockington Court throughout the year. You can also buy their homeware online here.

2005年 オーストラリアシドニーでDarlinghurst Theater公演「Honna no honor」に参加筝を通じて日豪文化交流に努めた
2015年には文化庁後援横浜開港祭The Brass Cruise2015で吹奏楽と協演を果たす。
独奏筝と吹奏楽のためのコンチェルティーノ“斎”を初演し好評を得た。

A video biography by Jordan Scott
San Franciscan native, George Matsumoto (1922-2016) was one of the five founding professors of NCSU's College of Design, and the first Asian American of the college. Matsumoto's journey from California to North Carolina was one of hardship and triumph, especially with Japanese internment, beginning in 1942. Internment changed Matsumoto's path as a budding architect.

埼玉県川口市のアンサンブルリベルテ吹奏楽団の金管八重奏チームの委嘱により作曲しました。タイトルはスペイン語で「3人の吟遊詩人」という意味です。名の通り曲も3楽章に分かれており、陽気なものからメロウなものまで、様々なスペイン風の曲に仕上げています。
