We can visit the old samurai residences.
I have visited this place on a school trip in high school.
I do not have the memory of that time, however.
I was able to visit here this time.
And I was able to be again impressed by the good old town.

JAPAN: HOMELESS PEOPLE
Japanese/Natsound
It's 1995, a new year full of hope and expectation for some, but less rosy for others...like the homeless.
Homelessness is a growing problem throughout the world, even in the most developed countries such as Japan.
In the last two years, homelessness in Tokyo has risen threefold and looks set to keep on rising this year.
Shinjuku, Tokyo's business and entertainment centre, is also the city's largest homeless community.
Support groups say the homeless population in the area numbered about 200 two years ago.
But this winter it has risen to 650.
It is thought there are at least two-thousand homeless in Tokyo.
They are mainly concentrated near the station, especially in two underground passageways that lead towards high-rise buildings and the seat of Tokyo's metropolitan government.
People call this cardboard alley.
While people hurry through, enjoying their New Year holidays, these people spend their nights with nowhere to go.
SOUNDBITE: (In Japanese)
The hardest thing is hunger, but we help each other here.
SUPER CAPTION: Toshimasa Takahashi - homeless
SOUNDBITE: (In Japanese)
My father is doctor and I got married and I had children. But I left home because got tired of family problems
SUPER CAPTION: Chikara Kato - homeless
Sixty percent of the homeless in Shinjuku were day labourers in construction.
Most of them are over 50 - shunned by employers.
The main reason for this is the sluggish economy and the fact that companies prefer younger workers.
Takao Ito is 58 years old.
He became homeless at the end of June.
He was suddenly laid off by his company which is a subcontractor to the Tokyo electric corporation.
Ito tries to keep himself clean.
He changes his cardboard box everyday and prefers to stay away from Shinjuku station because there are fleas around there.
But he's not happy about his situation.
SOUNDBITE:
It's sad. I feel miserable. It's pitiful for myself.
SUPER CAPTION: Takao Ito - homeless man
Ito found it too painful to say why it was that he had ended up sleeping rough.
All he could say was that he left home in Ibaragi, east of Japan, eight years ago.
But he hopes that he will have a job by the end of January through the help of some former work mates.
Ito tries to earn a little money by collecting cardboard boxes.
He makes around one-thousand yen (ten U-S dollars) on a good day - enough to buy two hamburgers and a small coffee.
But this job is not available everyday.
The local government has spent around 300 (m) million yen (three million U-S dollars) to provide accommodation and meals during the winter.
But these measures are only for the New Year holidays, offering the homeless only one or two weeks respite.
SOUNDBITE: (In Japanese)
I usually eat leftovers from meals anywhere I can.
SUPER CAPTION: Mitsuaki Wada - homeless
Christian groups such as the Salvation Army distribute provisions.
Here they are handing out chemical heat packs on a night expedition.
Norihiro Taira says this is the first meal he has had today.
SOUNDBITE:
First, we would like the authorities to implement the law and provide assistance for livelihood. And also we want them consistently carry out the public works projects and not to rely on the economic situation or leave contractors to handle employment.
SUPER CAPTION: Masato Yoshimura - homeless support volunteer
SOUNDBITE:
They collected taxes when I was working, why they can't use some of that tax money to benefit us now?
SUPER CAPTION: Seijiro Toyama - homeless
There is government social security for those who can't work or who don't find the jobs.
But to be eligible for any government services, labourers must register their address.
And few of the homeless have fixed residency.

Machiya Museum Japanese Old house Uchiko, Ehime, Japan Japan Trip 05 Moopon
Machiya Museum Japanese Old house Uchiko, Ehime, Japan Japan Trip 05 Moopon
The Machiya Museum is a small building at the southern end of the old town, which is open to the public. It shows how a typical merchant's residence looked like during the Edo Period. You can take a break in this facility learning how people in the old days lived.
Admission: Free
Hours: 9:00 to 16:30
Uchiko's name became synonymous with high quality white wax production in the late 19th century. At that time, wealthy local merchants built new homes or added to their own, resulting in beautiful streets lined with large, stylish, Meiji Period houses. The Yokaichi district has since been restored to preserve these buildings.
Yokaichi (八日市, Yōkaichi) is comprised of about 90 buildings along a single street. Two of these buildings are open to the public as museums, the largest and most impressive of which is the Kamihaga Residence. A combination ticket for Kamihaga Residence, the Uchiko-za kabuki theater and the Uchiko History Museum is sold for 900 yen from any of those locations.
Uchiko's Old Town is located about one kilometer or a 15 minute walk from JR Uchiko Station. The preserved section of the town is about 600 meters long and consists of about 90 historical houses.

Kyushu
Kyushu (九州, Kyūshū, lit. Nine Provinces) is the third largest island of Japan and most southwesterly of its four main islands. Its alternate ancient names include Kyūkoku (九国?, Nine States), Chinzei (鎮西?, West of the Pacified Area), and Tsukushi-no-shima (筑紫島?, Island of Tsukushi). The historical regional name Saikaidō (西海道, lit. West Sea Circuit) referred to Kyushu and its surrounding islands.
In the 8th century Taihō Code reforms, Dazaifu was established as a special administrative term for the region.

Dogs and Demons, Takahashi streambed 犬と鬼・高梁の河床
May 2, 2015 - I went to Takahashi in Okayama and saw this stream, which comes down out of a mountain. In the upstream portion, which is around farm land, some grass banks and sand survive. But downstream, the streambed is entirely man-made. Since it was in a mountain and a small town, it was an excellent illustration of the point Alex Kerr makes about streams in Dogs and Demons.
