6:30 a.m. breakfast at the Takaoka Manten Ekimae Hotel. Then I caught the local train to the Toide station to look around. Got there at 9:15 or so. Toide is just about ending a week’s celebration of their Tanabata festival. I knew was too early for anything exciting happening but I just took some quick pictures of the street decorations. The locals were just setting up their various food and other booths. I went back to Takaoka on the next local train. It was hot by the time I returned to Takaoka. Another hot and sweaty, humid day. Went from the train station to the Takaoka Zuiryuji Zen Buddhist temple which is a designated national treasure, the only national treasure in Toyama prefecture. 500-yen to enter. Then went across the other way to the Tomb of Toshinaga Maeda which is the tallest/largest tomb in Japan of a daimyo feudal lord. Then went way across town. I ran into the Great Buddha of Takaoka which is rated #3 of great Buddhas in Japan next to the Buddhas in Nara and Kamakura. The original Takaoka Buddha was built in the 1700s but it burned down. Finally in 1933 they made this large copper one.
Oh yeh, Takaoka prides itself as being a historic, cultural town of artisans and craftsmen. They are famous for copperware and lacquerware. You’ll see copper statues all over town.
A short distance from the Great Buddha is the entrance to Takaoka Kojo, a castle ruins park. Only some walls and moats remain as they couldn’t re-build the castle under the one castle per domain rule. Lots of copper statues around in this park. Nice green park for walking around and/or relaxing. Was getting close to 2 p.m. so I picked up some snacks for lunch/dinner combo and went to the hotel to relax a little.
I jumped on the train after 6 p.m. It was filled with students going where evers. A lot of them got off at my Toide stop. Walked around the areas with the Tanabata displays. Lots of food and game stands were open. It was still lighted but the Tanabata displays had their lights turned on. Too bad it wasn’t darker but I didn’t want to stick around too late because they had only 1 train per hour back to Takaoka.

Doraemon next day boarded the tram. Doraemon cartoon artists painted Fujiko F Fujio is born and spent his childhood in Takaoka City. Doraemon cartoon character drawn streetcars were placed to mark the home of cartoonist and world-class operation. Ryuji Zuiho written into the first floor of the second floor roof size, looks similar to prose. Second floor roof failure was so much snow as we can not accumulate snow on the ground floor and the roof umbrella role. First floor roof rafters are formed parallel to the rafters, while the second floor was made in the form of debt expanded to show more stable. Even the rock looks which support the Buddhist wisdom. One corner is easily broken try to prevent freezing up approximately 5 cm had no water to penetrate. Sanctum internal used the pole to a minimum as much as possible to show the ceiling. 47 tons and rests on pillars with a roof made of lead more than 360 years that there was a secret hiding. We used only Zelkova especially the pillars that hold the center of the center rings of the wood remains in the center you will surely bent or cracked for a long time after. That one is built without pillars to avoid using the center part of the tree, it made a huge rear quarter pillars zelkova should not strain even after long periods of time. Ryuji Zuiho Temple is the only national treasure, Toyama Prefecture. Dharma Hall has enshrined the counterfeiting and mallow leaves Maeda clan sentence of one city that I build this section. Another interesting thing has enshrined the god of the toilet. The bad thing to think that all comes from God needed the toilet will prevent this. Commentator has introduced a personal favorite place. The main building, including the Code, prose comes straight in the eye.

DYA717 July 8, 2016 Toyama, Takaoka, Johana
6:30 a.m. breakfast at the Takaoka Manten Ekimae Hotel. Then BURA-BURA. Another hot, humid, steamy, wet-sticky-clothes day! After a 20-minute walk from my hotel, I visited Kanayamachi, an area where they have preserved one street of old metal-casters and copperware makers. I mentioned that this city has many copper sculptures on display everywhere. Apparently they’re not afraid of copper DO-RO-BO-s like you know who/where! Copper drains, pipes, sidings, etc are everywhere. Then I walked along Yamachosuji (street lined with storehouses), another street with old preserved buildings, this time merchant storehouses. Most are now residences on top with some kind of store on the street level.
Uuuuuuuu, had plenty time so I jumped on the local train, my 1-car limo ride and went one hour to the end-of-the-line city, Johana. The tourist information office didn’t have English brochures but the lady spoke plenty good English. I followed her directions and first walked to Zentoku-ji, a Buddhist temple. This temple is over 500 years old and has many valuable aritifacts. A nice bell tower and a nice statue. Unfortunately I didn’t get an English brochure so I was only able to look around without knowing what’s what. It is worth a visit if you’re in the neighborhood.
Then I mosied to a sushi restaurant nearby which was recommended by the lady at the tourist information office. No English menu but the master spoke enough English to help me out. I had a small bowl of I guess chirashi sushi. ONO! I was taking pictures of the restaurant and the chef showed me a special room. Something like his man-cave and reserved for special dining, I guess. He has his New York Yankees memorabilia displayed there and he invited me in. I didn’t get the name of the Yankees’ Japanese player his is a fan of. He mentioned that the city of Johana has an annual Johana Hikiyama festival and pointed me out to the festival floats/artifacts museum. 510-yen to get in. This festival is held on May 5th so maybe that is something to look forward to in 2017.
I rushed back to the train station to catch the next local train back to Takaoka. Whew, not much written here but it seems like I did a lot and am tired.
