Takaoka Kojo Park, located roughly in the center of the city, is a nature park abounding in rustic beauty. Approximately one-third of its total area is devoted to a water jump obstacle course. In the park are the ruins of Takaoka Castle, built some 390 years ago for Maeda Toshinaga, second daimyo (feudal lord) of the Kaga clan, by Takayama Ukon, one of the foremost castle builders of the age. Also home to a community center and a museum, the park is a relaxing place, popular among local residents.

DYA717 July 7, 2016 Toyama, Takaoka, Toide
6:30 a.m. breakfast at the Takaoka Manten Ekimae Hotel. Then I caught the local train to the Toide station to look around. Got there at 9:15 or so. Toide is just about ending a week’s celebration of their Tanabata festival. I knew was too early for anything exciting happening but I just took some quick pictures of the street decorations. The locals were just setting up their various food and other booths. I went back to Takaoka on the next local train. It was hot by the time I returned to Takaoka. Another hot and sweaty, humid day. Went from the train station to the Takaoka Zuiryuji Zen Buddhist temple which is a designated national treasure, the only national treasure in Toyama prefecture. 500-yen to enter. Then went across the other way to the Tomb of Toshinaga Maeda which is the tallest/largest tomb in Japan of a daimyo feudal lord. Then went way across town. I ran into the Great Buddha of Takaoka which is rated #3 of great Buddhas in Japan next to the Buddhas in Nara and Kamakura. The original Takaoka Buddha was built in the 1700s but it burned down. Finally in 1933 they made this large copper one.
Oh yeh, Takaoka prides itself as being a historic, cultural town of artisans and craftsmen. They are famous for copperware and lacquerware. You’ll see copper statues all over town.
A short distance from the Great Buddha is the entrance to Takaoka Kojo, a castle ruins park. Only some walls and moats remain as they couldn’t re-build the castle under the one castle per domain rule. Lots of copper statues around in this park. Nice green park for walking around and/or relaxing. Was getting close to 2 p.m. so I picked up some snacks for lunch/dinner combo and went to the hotel to relax a little.
I jumped on the train after 6 p.m. It was filled with students going where evers. A lot of them got off at my Toide stop. Walked around the areas with the Tanabata displays. Lots of food and game stands were open. It was still lighted but the Tanabata displays had their lights turned on. Too bad it wasn’t darker but I didn’t want to stick around too late because they had only 1 train per hour back to Takaoka.

Photograph stumbled upon eerie Japanese village with hundreds of statues
Japanese photographer Ken Ohki, better known under the pseudonym Yukison, traveled in Toyama Prefecture and stumbled upon an eerie collection of human sculptures scattered throughout the village Fureai Sekibutsu no Sato. The name of the unusual settlement can be translated as The Village, where you can meet a Buddhist statue.
I thought I stumbled on some forbidden place. Incredible - Ken wrote on Twitter.
In fact, he came to the park, which contains about 800 stone statues, carved in the likeness of Buddhist deities and family of the founder of the park, Matsuo Furukawa. He expected that the park will become a popular destination for tourists, where people come to relax. The idea is good, of course, but over time the statues lost their aura of serenity and peace, and now seem to be rather scary than soothing.

Toyama Prefecture (富山県 Toyama-ken) is a prefecture of Japan located in the Hokuriku region on the main Honshu island. The capital is the city of Toyama.
Toyama is the leading industrial prefecture on the Japan Sea coast, and has the industrial advantage of cheap electricity from abundant hydroelectric resources. It also contains East Asia’s only known glaciers outside Russia, first recognized in 2012.
“Toyama” means “rich with mountains” and the city offers stunning views of the 3,000 meter crest of the Northern Japan Alps from its picture perfect location on the Sea of Japan, only 250 km northwest of Tokyo.
Historically, Toyama was a powerful castle town and today this thriving high tech city still offers visitors splendid ancient festivals and neighborhoods with traditional 19th century wooden buildings along with ultra-modern trams along the downtown canals and the largest community of glass artists in Japan.
With some of the most famous sashimi and sushi in Japan, award winning pure water, spectacular mountain trekking, remarkable museums, and easy access, eco-friendly Toyama has it all. Come see the real Japan.

ec. 21, 2009 Visiting grand mother, Buddist ceremony in Himi, Toyama & Sushi Restaurant in Takaoka.
We visited Kai's grand mother's grave (she passed away in June 2008) in Himi, Toyama in Japan.
It was right after heavy snow fall (60 cm over night) but we managed to reach there. Then we met with one of relatives in Takaoka , and we were taken to a sushi restaurant.
