Ever heard about Takarazuka Revue? || All-female Japanese Theatre
For copyright reasons I can't show more about the show itself/the actresses, so if you want to know more check the links below!
Takarazuka Revue has a long story (it's been going on since around 1914, founded by Kobayashi Ichizo, in an attempt to try making the job of an actress more accepted in society) and there are many other things that Lilla and Mallory would have been glad to talk about, but we tried not to go into details and keep it more as a casual talk in order for the video to be enjoyed even without any knowledge about the topic, hope we managed to do so :D

Takarazuka Girl's Opera, Takarazuka, Japan, 1946 (full)
Freely downloadable at the Internet Archive, where I first uploaded it. Silent color footage. General Information: This sequence was photographed in two nights of production at the Takarazuka Girl's Opera, Takarazuka, Japan. It is the only school of it's kind in Japan, accepting only girl students for a seven year course. During the first two years, they receive fundamental training in music, drama, and dancing, Occidental and Japanese. Simultaneously, they are given secondary education at a high school level. Divided among the vocal, dramatic, Western dance, and Japanese dance departments, they receive specialized training for a period of five years in accordance with their individual abilities. The girls come from the finest families and are schooled under strict moral codes of discipline. Units from this institution have, however, toured the world and have appeared at the San Francisco and New York World Fairs. The show covered is presented daily at Takarazuka and embodies the most colorful and unusual in production in Japan, ranging from modernized classical Kabuki scenes, Western ballet, ultra-modern dancing, and Occidental reviews. 304' Pit scene - In these shots, the leads, hero and heroine, rise from the stage pit. They are characters from the modernized, light, Kabuki-type play that is intertwined with the musical show. They are dressed in costumes dating back to the mid 1600's - colorations worn by royalty in shogun life. 140' Mirror Act - The comedy lead of the play performs a humorous mirror act, wherein, a second girl mimics her actions to give the impression of a mirror. 54' Misc. scenes from the Kabuki-type play showing the colorful costumes and pantomime acting of the principal players. 119' (Shot sync. sound) Ballad sung by the two heroine (princesses) the night before the wedding, telling their great happiness. They are in their royal chambers, with their ladies-in-waiting seated behind them. National Archives Identifier 64536

Japan, Takarazuka all-girls revue in 1948 宝塚歌劇団
An American army officer filmed the revue right after the war in 1948 called 'Book of Night Cranes/Aloha 'Oe', by the Snow Troupe 1948. The quality is not best, but then, it is kind of an historical document. Viewers tell me that the show is 'Book of Night Cranes/Aloha 'Oe', Snow Troupe 1948. The main performers are Kasygano Tachiyo-sama (born in 1928) and Otowa Nobuko

Come along with me as I watch one of Japan's most famed theatrical performances. Takarazuka is home to the oldest, all female, theatrical troupes in Japan. Although I couldn't show the actual performance, follow me through the process of getting there, getting tickets and finding my seat. Also see what my initial reactions are following the show are.

SHOTLIST
Tokyo - 22 October, 2007
1. Wide shot of people standing around in front of the theatre
2. Mid pan from Takarazuka posters to customer buying a ticket at counter
3. Mid shot of people entering the theatre
4. Wide pan of theatre gift shop
5. Close up shot of flag of the Tokyo Takarazuka Theatre
6. Wide shot of actress Kiriya Hiromu dancing in orange costume
7. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Kiriya Hiromu, actress
I think people like it (this style of theatre) because it is very different from real life. In daily life the kind of men portrayed here cannot be found. Even though fans know we are women they can still relate to the sort of ideal image of a man which we play.
8. Mid shot of Takarazuka books for sale with Kiriya Hiromu on front cover
9. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Kiriya Hiromu, actress
And then there's all the other aspects like the gorgeous extravagant shows and stages. Our shows touch various stories and topics dealing with different countries and periods in time, which the public finds very entertaining. I believe that is the best way to explain it (the interest in our theatre).
10. Mid pull out of Kiriya Hiromu performing, dressed in a suit
11. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Kiriya Hiromu, actress
As far as the actresses who play male roles, they are a bit different. For example I am one myself, and although I'm a girl in daily life in front of fans I behave in a somewhat masculine manner, at least until I get home.
12. Wide shot of Kiriya Hiromu in her male role singing and kissing another actress
13. Mid shot of male-role actress Jun Sena greeting photographers after rehearsal
14. Close-up of Jun Sena's face
15. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Yuki Ito, fan
Well, I think it's the fact that they are men played by women, so the men are the way women want to see them and that's why they fascinate fans.
16. Wide of stage scene with Jun Sena in blue, and Kiriya Hiromu wearing burgundy
17. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Kiriya Hiromu, Actress
In the beginning of my acting career I was very conscious about my behaviour. How I walked, how I sat, how I moved. I tried hard to behave in a masculine way. Now ten years on, I don't try so hard anymore and I have refined my acting technique so I can just relax and, without exaggerating, I feel I can portray on stage a manly image. In my private life, although I don't wear skirts much, I'm just like any other girl.
18. Wide of Kiriya Hiromu on stage performing and singing
19. Wide of Kiriya Hiromu on stage performing - dialogue with Jun Sena
20. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Kiriya Hiromu, actress
I will think about my future after I leave Takarazuka. Of course, like any other woman, maybe I'd like to marry and have kids, but for now I'm doing Takarazuka, and I want to focus and do my best at what I'm doing until I'm satisfied I've reached my peak, and then I will want to quit when I'm on top, with my fans' support and best wishes. I don't think about it too much though. I'll think about my future when I quit.
21. Wide of stage with all dancers performing for the final scene
22. Wide of stage during ending scene
LEAD IN:
Female actors are finding fame in Japan, in the country's only all-women theatre company.
With stiff competition and years of training, a place in this company is a sought after job.
STORYLINE:
A female Japanese theatre company is taking the country by storm.
Named Takarazuka, after the city from where it originates, it has been going strong since 1914.
Dressing-up is certainly nothing new in the world of theatre, but this company employs only women actors, who take on both male and female roles.
At the moment, the company's shows are performed only in Tokyo and Takarazuka.
