Working at a Japanese Snow Monkey Park ★ ONLY in JAPAN
The Japanese snow monkey or the Japanese macaque is a symbol of Japanese folklore and making a visit to go and see them is a must on any trip to Japan. Takasaki-yama (Mt Takasaki) is home to a special monkey reserve and I got to work here for a day!
My job? Help bring the monkeys down from the mountain, feed them, keep the area clean and make sure humans don't get out of line.
The park was established in 1952 after WWII when the monkeys were going down from the mountain to the farm fields to eat the crops. There wasn't enough food for humans at the time so the city set up this park to attract them to the other side.
Oita City is famous for so many things besides this park!
It will be one of the venues for the Rugby World Cup.
There's also it's chicken dish called toriten, wagyu, fresh fish like Seki Saba and Seki Aji, onsen and nature -- and of course, Takasakiyama!

There are cheap flights from Tokyo and Osaka for as little as 5000 yen ($45) It takes only 65 minutes and usually flies right over Mt. Fuji!

Located within the hot springs prefecture of Oita in Kyushu is the world famous hot springs resort town of Beppu. It also has eight major geothermal hot spots, sometimes referred to as the eight hells of Beppu. They are presented to visitors in a rather touristy fashion.
Takasakiyama Monkey Park
Mount Takasaki (Takasakiyama) is a forested mountain just outside of Beppu. The mountain is a home to more than 1500 wild Japanese monkeys. These monkeys are fed regularly by park staffs in order to keep them on the mountain and prevent conflicts with farmers and residents in the vicinity.
Hours: 8:30 to 17:00 (last entry at 16:30)
Closed: Opened All Year Round
Admission: 510 yen

It takes about a 10 minute bus ride.
The Monkey Marine Ticket for 2260 yen consists of a round trip from Beppu to the monkey park and admission to the monkey park and nearby Umitamago Aquarium.

Umitamago
Umitamago, is also known as Oita Marine Palace, is an attractive aquarium just outside of Beppu. The main water tank includes over 90 types, and 1500 fishes so if you stand on the glass floor you can feel like you are inside the ocean. Animals living in Umitamago include seals, otters, dolphins, penguins and various fish.
A visit to Umitamago Aquarium is best combined with a visit to the nearby Takasakiyama Monkey Park.

大分・高崎山のおサルたち 前編 Wild Japanese Monkeys in Takasakiyama Part1
大分県の高崎山自然動物園のふもとから猿寄せ場まで、さるっこレール（小型モノレール）で上がりました。このビデオでは、さるっこレール、サル寄せ場、そして最大の見所であるイモ取り競争をご覧になれます。イモ取り競争はリヤカーに積んだサツマイモをリヤカーを走らせながら一気にばらまいていきます。サルたちが我先にとリヤカーを追い、イモを拾い、口にくわえ、両手で持って中腰で走り回る光景があまりにも面白くて、横にいた女の人が笑いが止まらなくなっていました。タイムセールや目玉セールなどの光景とどこかだぶります。後編に続きます。
イモ取り競争の際にスタッフの方がおっしゃっていた言葉が印象的でした。

この時だけは親子関係がなくなりますので、
子供に分けて与える母親なんて一頭もいません。
子供の芋を取り上げるお母さん方はたくさんいます。
それが現実ですね。
分けて与えられた子供はね。大人になったときに後悔します。
自分で取っていかないと生きていけませんから。
親を頼ってしまうと親が死んでしまったときに困るのは子供ですからね。
小さい頃から自分で取ることを覚えないといけません。

Takasakiyama is a mountain 628 meters high near Beppu Bay. It is located between Oita city and Beppu city and is known as the forest where many wild monkeys live. Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden (Takasakiyama Monkey Park) is at the foot of the mountain. It isn't a common zoo. Wild Japanese monkeys gather there by artificial feeding. They are living near this park in Mount Takasaki.
In the early 20th century, the monkeys had ruined farm crops around this area. The farmers had been trying to drive the monkeys away, but all methods had no effect. The mayor of Oita city thought upside down, and tried to feed them and use them as a resource of the sightseeing in 1952. And the place to feed them was constructed and was opened in 1953. First, 220 monkeys came here, and more than 1,200 monkeys come now.
How to get to here
By route bus
About 25 minutes from JR Oita station.
About 15 minutes from JR Beppu station.

Japan Zoo apologises for naming monkey after Royal Baby ‘Charlotte'
A zoo in Oita Prefecture has apologised for naming a baby monkey Charlotte after the newborn British princess following complaints from the Japanese public.
The zoo was flooded with angry calls and emails, hours after announcing the name for its first born monkey of the year, a tradition at the city-run zoo in southern Japan. The Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden said on Thursday it was considering renaming the macaque.
