This ancient monastery is believed to be one of the most well-structured and well preserved ancient Buddhist monasteries in the Gandhara district. The ruins are located more than five hundred feet up on top of a hill, and due to this elevation, these remnants have remained virtually untouched for many hundreds of years.

Buddhist Sites in Takht-i-Bahi Mardan Khyber Pukhtoon Khwa,Pakistan UNESCO World Heritage List
Dear Viewers, Cell : Number:92-300-5714194
The Buddhist remains in Takht Bhai are believed to have been constructed between the first and the fifth century BC. The town is situated about 15 kilometres from Mardan Khyber Pukhtun Khwa. There are four main areas of the Takht Bahi complex:
The Stupa Court, a cluster of stupas located in a central courtyard
The monastic chambers, consisting of individual cells arranged around a courtyard, assembly halls, and a dining area.
A temple complex, consisting of stupas and similar to the Stupa Court, but of later construction.
The Tantric monastic complex, which consists of small, dark cells with low openings, which may have been used for certain forms of Tantric meditation.
Additional structures on the site may have served as residences or meeting halls, or filled secular purposes. All of the buildings on the site are constructed from local stone, and are mortared with lime and mud.
History
Many statues of Buddha were discovered at the site, which have been housed in the Peshawar, and Mardan Museums.
In Sanskrit, Takht means well and Bhai means on a high surface so the word means well on a high surface. The area was listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1980.Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa is rich in archaeological remains of the Ghandhara civilization, but unfortunately the timeless remains from our collective past have suffered from government neglect and vandalism.
Takht-i-Bahi - Virtual Tour
This video gives a glimpse of Takht-i-Bahi which was digitally documented in 2015 using 3D Laser Scanning technology under a project titled Digital Preservation of Pakistan's Heritage funded by USAID SGAFP. (For more info visit:
The Buddhist monastic complex at Takht-i-Bahi (Throne of Origins) was founded in the early 1st century located in modern-day Mardan, Khyber Pukhtunkhwa. Owing to its location on the crest of a high hill, it escaped successive invasions and is still exceptionally well preserved. The complex is regarded by archaeologists as being particularly representative of the architecture of Buddhist monastic centers from its era, due to which it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.
The Buddhist monastery was in continual use until the 7th century AD. It is composed of an assemblage of buildings and is the most complete Buddhist monastery in Pakistan. Today the ruins comprise a main stupa court, votive stupas court, a group of three stupas, the monastic quadrangle with meditation cells, conference hall, covered stepped passageways and other secular buildings.
Takht-i-Bhai Archaeological Site (Mini-Documentary by PTV News) (With English subtitles)
Directed & Produced by Syed Fareed Ali. The ostentatious structure and imposing relics of the Buddhist monastery Takht-i-Bhai (Throne of Origins) has captivated a large number of locals and tourists who have flocked to see the ancient site which dates back to early 1st century AD.
Listed in the World Heritage List, it is considered one of the most well-structured Buddhist monasteries in Gandhara district.
It is perched about 500 feet atop a small hill, about 2 kilometers east of the Takht Bhai bazaar in Mardan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), once known as the heart of the Gandhara civilization, which attracts tourists, historians, archaeologists and Buddhists from across the world.
The Buddhist complex and the village, as locals say, is named after the two wells found on top of the hill near the complex, however, majority believe that takht means throne and bhai means water in Persian language.
