The Taklamakan Desert /ˌtæk.lə.məˈkæn/ (Chinese: 塔克拉玛干沙漠; pinyin: Tǎkèlāmǎgān Shāmò, Xiao'erjing: تَاكْلامَاقًا شَاموْ; Uyghur: تەكلىماكان قۇملۇقى; Dungan: Такәламаган Шамә), also spelled Taklimakan and Teklimakan, is a desert in southwest Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, northwest China. It is bounded by the Kunlun Mountains to the south, the Pamir Mountains and Tian Shan (ancient Mount Imeon) to the west and north, and the Gobi Desert to the east.
The name may be an Uyghur borrowing of the Persian tark, to leave alone/out/behind, relinquish, abandon + makan, place.[1][2] Some sources claimed it means Place of No Return, more commonly interpreted as once you get in, you'll never get out or similar.[3][4][5] Another plausible explanation suggests it is derived from Turki taqlar makan, describing the place of ruins.

Villagers in Xinjiang's Desert Town Reluctant to Move Despite Harsh Living Conditions
A state program to resettle residents from impoverished villages adjacent to northwest China’s Taklamakan Desert to nearby cities has become a hard choice for some of those who are reluctant in changing their habitual way of life.
45 year-old Zibidehan Subi is a Uygur housewife living in Darya Boyi, a lonely, sparsely populated oasis located deep in the Taklamakan Desert in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The village is home to 300 families, all are ethnic Uyghurs.
Subi has been living in a wooden house since she got married at 15. She says the biggest change in the village is the number of vehicles.
We enjoy living a nomadic life. But the children are elsewhere, so we need to go to see them. Otherwise, we don't have to leave the village, said Subi.
Ali Abdulla, her youngest son, goes to school in the Yutian county seat, some 250 kilometers away.
Gathering tree roots for cooking fuel is an traditional survival skill, as Darya Boyi is cut off from the outside world, and modern conveniences.
However, the old ways of living are changing among local youngsters. Ali says one question has always been in his mind, when can he leave the desert?
I want to take good care of my parents when I get a good job in the future,” said Ali Abdulla.
Villagers have survived in the Taklamakan for 400 years. However, the drying up of the Keriya River, and the encroaching sands have resulted in 50 families moving to the government-built resettlement houses on the outskirts of Yutian County.
Another 100 low-income families, including Zibidehan’s family, are expected to join them by 2018.
For her husband Abdulla Qasimu, living in a desert is neither bad nor good.
I have no skills other than herding. If I'm being relocated out of here, I can hardly make a living,” said Qasimu.
With inadequate water supplies, farming is not an option for Darya Boyi villagers. Many residents, especially the youngsters, say that relocation would be the easiest and quickest way to end their struggle in poverty.
Old villagers like Zibidehan say they want to stay in Darya Boyi and remain their habitual way of life.
We would love to live an easy life till we die. Conditions are harsh, but that’s the life of nomads. Allah made me a herdswoman; that’s my life. It just like the five fingers cannot be the same; life is what you make of it,” said Zibidehan. More on:

Is Xinjiang China's Most Dangerous Province?
Join YPT in the deserts and oasis towns of China’s Far West!
From the ancient city of Kashgar, through small Uyghur towns on the southern Silk Road, we cross the Taklamakan Desert to Turpan, the lowest city in China at 142m below sea level.
The Xinjiang Far West tour starts in the historic city of Kashgar, closer geographically to Tehran and Damascus than to Beijing, a border town between China and the Central Asian states of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, and the site where traditional Uyghur life hits the Chinese state head-on. We visit the old town, livestock market and main bazaar and, being YPT, can’t miss out on the huge statue of Chairman Mao in People’s Square.
We check out small Uyghur towns that haven’t been developed along the Kashgar model, yet, and skirt the Taklamakan Desert as we go. On the north of the desert, we spend a day at Kuqa’s amazing Thousand Buddha caves, reminding us that before the spread of Islam southern Xinjiang was the place where Buddhism entered China.
Lastly, we hang out in the Turpan, China’s Death Valley, the lowest and hottest place in China. In the countryside outside the city, it’s surprisingly green though and we wander the ruins of ancient cities and stop in a Uyghur holy village for lunch.
If you’d like to see some more Central Asia while you’re here, you could join us for the Silk Road Summer Tour, which visits Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan as well or simply the Kyrgyzstan Independence Day and Xinjiang Combo to combine the best of these two locations and one of China’s least travelled border crossings.
Conquering the desert of no return! Expedition starts to cross Taklamakan in China's
Xinjiang
Endless sand, shifting dunes, ancient Silk Road relics...The 337,000-square-km Taklamakan in northwest China's Xinjiang is known as a desert of no return. Swedish geographer and explorer Sven Anders Hedin tried to cross the Taklamakan along the 39 degrees north latitude line in 1895, but failed. Now a group of Chinese explorers have embarked on an ambitious expedition to cross the world's second largest shifting sand desert. Don't miss this video!

Travelling from Gansu to Xinjiang province in China
Last part of our Silk Road trip. From Gansu province to Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, the homeland of the Muslim Uyghurs. Much of this remote province remains a world apart from China giving it much more of a Central Asian feel. Only a few tourists visit this place, it is one of China's best-kept secrets. We visited Turpan, Tuyoq (one of the few inhabited ancient Uyghur villages), the Kumtag desert and the capital Urumqi (which is closer to Moscow than Beijing).

The Tarim Desert Highway - The World’s Largest Desert Highway
The Tarim Desert Highway (Chinese: 塔里木沙漠公路), also known as the Cross-Desert Highway (CDH) or Taklamakan Desert Highway, crosses the Taklamakan Desert from North to South in China. There are now three highways: two main highways and one branch highway.
Lunmin Highway:
This highway links the cities of Luntai (Chinese: 轮台) on National Highway 314 and Minfeng (Chinese: 民丰) on National Highway 315, on the northern and southern edges of the Tarim Basin. The total length of the highway is 552 km; approximately 446 km of the highway cross uninhabited areas covered by shifting sand dunes, making it the longest such highway in the world.
Taqie Highway:
This highway, 156 km long, is a branch highway, connecting Tazhong (Chinese: 塔中) on the Lunmin Highway, above, with Qiemo (Chinese: 且末) in the southeast direction on National Highway 315. It opened in 2002, and is called the autonomous region's S233 Highway.
Ahe Highway:
This highway, 424.77 km long, opened in 2007, starts from Aral (Chinese: 阿拉尔) on National Highway 314, west of the historical town of Kucha (Chinese: 库车), in Aksu Prefecture (Chinese: 阿克苏地区), goes southward along the Hetian River, and ends in Hetian (Chinese: 和田) on National Highway 315.
The Tarim Desert Highway across the Taklamakan desert, in China, links the cities of Luntai and Minfeng on the northern and southern edges of the Tarim basin. The total length of the highway is 552 km, of which approximately 446 km is built across uninhabited areas covered by shifting sand dunes, 20 metes tall, that frequently bury the highway.
To prevent the highway from getting buried by the encroaching sand dunes, rows of vegetation were planted on both sides of the road to anchor the sand with their roots. A massive irrigation system was constructed that pump water from underground reservoirs to sustain the artificial ecosystem. Hundreds of workers were employed, housed every four kilometers along the road who tend to the short, small-leaved rose willows, sacsaoul and buckthorn and make sure they do not die. The water comes from wells, bored 100 meters deep into an aquifer which sits under the desert, which in turn is fed by the rivers that flow down from the surrounding mountains. Despite the high saline content in the water, the green belt continues to thrive.
