Traditional Village on Alor Island Indonesia - Takpala
Takpala is a traditional village on the island of Alor in Indonesia. The word “takpala” derived from the word ”tak” means “barrier” and the word “pala” means “wood”. Therefore Takpala can be described as a “a wooden barrier”. In this video you can see people of Takpala wearing traditional clothes and doing a traditional dance, called Lego-lego.

Takpala Village Cicular Dances on Alor Island
Up in the hills of Alor Island of east Indonesia is a small village called Takpala Village. The villagers share their traditional songs and dances, like the Lego-Lego dance and others. Lawrence Blair gives us a little more insight of the people and dances.

Takpala village is one of the well preserved traditional villages of Abui tribe in Alor. It is located approximately 1 hour from Kalabahi city. Abui ethnic group are the largest ethnic group in Alor Island. They also used to be called Tak Abui means “big mountain”. These local inhabitants still strictly practice the tradition and culture.
The word “takpala” derived from the word “tak” means “barrier” and the word “pala” means “wood”. Therefore, Takpala can be described as “a wooden barrier”, but some would prefer to describe it as “a wooden bludgeon (beater)”. The village of Takpala firstly known by European tourists since a Dutch tourist named Ferry exhibited his photographs capturing the life of local people of Takpala in 1973. He also made some of those photographs a calendar while promoting a primitive life in Alor Island.

The Abui Tribe at Takpala on the north coast of the island of Alor still adhere to their traditional way of life and perform colourful dance and battle rituals for tourists that make their way to this out of the way island.

Lego-Lego Dance
Lego-Lego dance is original traditional dance of Abui tribe come from Alor, East Nusa Tenggara province. Lego-Lego dance symbolizes the power of unitary and brotherhood of Abui tribe. This dance is massively perfomed by holding hands and standing in a circle. Lego-Lego dance is performed in various traditional ceremonies, such as wedding ceremony. But now, this dance is performed to welcome guests or tourists who come to Alor, especially Takpala village. This dance is an expression of happiness.

To start the dance, the guest will earlier be welcomed by local people, then invite them to go to a big tree. The guests with local women hold the hands going around the tree. The guests are welcome to participate in the dance. With feet movement, the dancers will move surrounding the tree accompanied by gong and Moko, a gong made of brass. When dancing, they are offered with betel and nuts.
Local women and men who are involved in the dance, wear traditional clothes. They wear silver bracelets on their legs so that they ring while they move their feet. When they dance, they also sing and read poem. Usually, the elderly people sing and read the poem.

Lego-lego Dance at Takpala Village -- Alor Island
Takpala typical dance is done in bulk by holding hands in a circle. Lego-Lego Dancers wearing traditional clothing, while women's hair is left loose. At the foot of the dancers, placed a silver bracelet that will reflect the tinkling sound when moved.

Ceremonial dance at a village near Kalabahi, Alor, in Eastern Indonesia, Nusa Tenggara Timur. The remote island of Alor is to the east of the long island of Flores. Note the bronze moko drums, which originated in Vietnam, but are particularly associated with Alor. The villagers' dress is the traditional local ikat woven textile.
This performance took place during a visit to Kalabahi of guests from the Renaissance VI Cruise ship in March 1994.
