69. KCS Action on Rich Mountain
Two Kansas City Southern trains are seen on the KCS Heavener and Shreveport Subdivisions between Heavener, Oklahoma and Mena, Arkansas on March 11, 2014.
The first train is seen entering the yard in Heavener and slowing to a stop to refuel the locomotives. Heavener is the southern end of the Heavener Subdivision, which runs 220 miles north to Pittsburg, Kansas. The yard is one of the larger operations on the line, with crew dorms and the aforementioned locomotive refueling station marking its importance. The train has just exited the Shrevport Subdivision and has run over the top of Rich Mountain, the steepest grade on the KCS and one of the few mountain grades between the Mississippi river and the Rocky Mountains. This line was built in the 1890s by the Kansas City, Pittsburg, and Gulf and was a part of a system that eventually ran from Kansas City, Missouri south to Port Arthur, Texas. This line is one of the few north/south transcontinental rail lines to be built in the U.S. The KCS gained control of the line in 1900 and operates it to this day. KCS and fellow Class 1 railroad BNSF cooperate by running loaded BNSF coa trains over this line as they travel between the Powder River Basin of Wyoming to customers all over the midwest and midsouth states. One of those coal fired plants is located near my home in eastern Texas. BNSF and KCS often pool power on these trains, so it is possible to see coal trains with pure sets of BNSF power on these tracks.
The Rich Mountain grade reaches 2% for southbound movements and over 1.8% for northbounds, so trains move slowly over the summit and chasing is rather easy. The line crosses into Arkansas less than five miles north (geographic west) of the summit. After catching this coal train I drove to Rich Mountain and recorded the next train at the location where a portion of the Ouachita hiking trail crosses the tracks. One actually has to step over the rails to follow the trail. With a parking lot only about a 10th of a mile from the crossing and just off U.S. Hwy. 59, access is easy. I was lucky to catch another northbound train as it climbed the final mile or so to the summit of Rich Mountain. This grain train must have been empty, as it was moving quite quickly. Unfortunately, there must have been maintainance or other issues along the line, because, there was no other traffic for several hours. I was fine with that because my principal reason for being in the area was to take pictures along the Talimena drive, which runs 63 miles from Mena, AR to Talihina, OK. The clouds did clear off and the day was very pleasant, although quite windy. Maybe sometime in the future I can go back and get some more videos. Thanks for watching, and please visit my channel page for more videos.
