'Solway Lass' Tall Ship - Whitsundays Adventure - Y7 2017
Silkwood School - Year 7 Camp
Linked to Integrated Unit studies, exploring voyages by sea in ‘The Age of Exploration’ and Marine Science, this Tall Ship sailing expedition in the Whitsunday Islands is very much about the experience of being exported back in time on a tall ship under sail. The magic of exploring The Great Barrier Reef - one of the seven wonders of the natural world, with an abundance of spectacular marine life - is truly unforgettable.
The ‘Solway Lass’ is a two-masted, square-rigged tall ship built in Martenshoek Holland in 1902. In 1999 Solway Lass was purchased by Australian Tall Ship Cruises of Airlie Beach and today ‘Solway Lass’ is maintained in beautiful condition for expeditions in the Whitsunday Islands.
With larger groups, a Maxi Sailing Yacht, ‘Boomerang’, is also chartered for the Whitsundays Adventure. The two vessels work in conjunction with each other and the itinerary is arranged to ensure all students are given the experience of both sailing vessels, with whole group activities are run aboard The Solway Lass. Students will either be on ‘Solway Lass’ or ‘Boomerang’ for sleeping arrangements; this will not be changed during the charter.
The Whitsunday Islands are located off the coast from Airlie Beach in the centre of the World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
During their 5-day voyage, students will explore pristine island locations, snorkel on coral reefs, bushwalk to lookout points on islands, learn about local indigenous culture and history of islands, experience how to hoist sails and operate a ship at full sail and conduct marine science investigations. They’ll also have time to appreciate stunning vistas and island sunsets, try the Tarzan rope swing and swim in beautiful waters, lie in the bow net and enjoy deck time activities with peers. The crew are friendly, full of energy and always willing to authentically engage students in relevant activities. The meals provided are healthy and delicious and students will truly have an experience of a lifetime on this camp.
