Costa Rica 2015 (part 5): Herping La Selva Biological Station
The final video in my 2015 Costa Rica herping trip. I spent 4 days at La Selva Biological station with my wife and 6 more days without her. Some 60 kilometers of trails through old growth forest, new forests, swamps, with rivers, creeks, and mountains. I saw a Tamandua ant eater, large Fer-de-Lance viper, toucans, honduran white bats, Agouti, and numerous frogs and spiders on the trail between the cabins and the dining hall. Access to guides was also great for finding more wildlife and staying wiser and safer. Dealing with humidity and the regular downpours of rain was more difficult than I thought. If you don't mind roughing it a bit and having some adventure La Selva Biological Station is a great place to get close to the wildlife of the Costa Rican rainforest. Peccary have such a strong musky smell I often would smell them before I could see them!

Rio Nuevo Lodge
Located just 25 minutes from Puerto Jimenez on the Osa Peninsula is Rio Nuevo Tent Camp. Perched on a point overlooking the confluence of two rivers, the ever-present sound of free-flowing water will be the sound track as you explore miles of trails and rivers. The twelve comfortable tents blend in nicely with the forest and many come with their own bathroom and shower. They also have private porches that are great for relaxing on and listening to the sounds of the forest. For more info please go to:
Costa Rica 2015 (part 3): Herping La Tarde
One adventure was having Gary Kritzinger ( from Bushmaster Adventures drive to Drake Bay and pick up Jim and myself, drive us all the way to La Tarde (driving over rivers, dodging dogs and tamandua on the road), where I herped as hard as I could until I hit a wall where I just could not cool off. Jim had an interest in wildlife photography and I think we all did have a good time even though we got back around 2am with me absolutely exhausted. If anyone is hiking around La Tarde and sees a camera lense cover for a DSLR camera its probably Jim's...
If you like to go hiking in the rain forests of Osa penninsula in Costa Rica you should look up Bushmaster Adventures for tours. I regret missing the dolphin & sea snake speed boat tour!

Pacific Trrail hike Costa Rica
Pretty much an all day hike from Bosque del cabo to a beautiful waterfall a few miles up the beach. It is as though we were the only humans on the planet after leaving the Lodge. The Ocean was all ours.

CORCOVADO NATIONAL PARK.mp4
Famously labeled by National Geographic as the most biologically intense place on earth, this national park is the last great original tract of tropical rain forest in Pacific Central America. The bastion of biological diversity is home to Costa Ricas largest population of scarlet macaws, as well as countless other endangered species, including Bairds tapir, the giant anteater and the worlds largest bird of prey, the rare harpy eagle. Its amazing biodiversity has long attracted the attention of tropical ecologists, as well as a devoted stream of visitors who descend from Bahía Drake and Puerto Jiménez to explore the remote location and spy on a wide array of wildlife.

Treehouses in Costa Rica, Tree House, Swiss Family Robinson Rental in Southern Costa Rica..
If you only choose one Treehouse in Costa Rica to stay in with your family. make it the lapas nest near Puerto Jimenez.
Our kids in Costa Rica were 8, 6, and 2, and accustomed to camping, being outside, climbing trees, etc. The railings at the Lapas Nest Treehouse is in remote Costa Rica and near beach. You have to trust that your kids will not climb on the railing or be rambunctious in the costa rica treehouses.
It would not be hard for a kid to fall out of the treehouse if they were not being careful or not being supervised. Our kids got an ultimatum that if they acted crazy and we couldn't trust them in the house, we would have to leave. But they did great, and loved every minute of it, wanting to come home from the beach or hiking early to hang out at the treehouse!)There was everything you could possibly want in the tree house. It is best if you are comfortable with frogs sleeping in the hanging coffee mug or the occasional lizard briefly sharing your living space. The best vehicle for ascending the final two inclines of the dirt and gravel private drive would be a four wheel drive. I thoroughly enjoyed living at tree canopy level and watching spider monkey packs move through early in the morning.
The skylight on the top level is obscured by leaves and canopy debris and film but the night sky is fantastic from the clearings. The bird watching in the mornings is best from the decks of Lapa Song apartments where the less adventurous find comforts of spacious terrestrial housing. The path to the swimming hole in the river agujas is steep and long and I never had the time to reach the bottom. Agujas means needles and watch out for the sapling trees with the tree trunks covered with sewing needle sized defenses. I felt very much at home and want to return next year.
Treehouse 50' up in the canopy. You gotta see this one ! Magic and built on the ground from renewable lumber, recycled materials, and hoisted into our tree with 9000 lb. winch, muscle & rope. A very private Osa Peninsula Adventure Vacation Home Rental magical books for kids to read, privacy for weddings and honeymoons too.
