Tamarack: The Best of West Virginia: is a tourist destination located at Exit 45 above the Beckley service area of the West Virginia Turnpike. It features a red peaked roof and landscaped grounds that draw over 500,000 visitors annually. This large arts and crafts facility is run as an economic development project of the West Virginia Parkways Authority and sells West Virginia craft products, such as wood, glass, textiles, pottery, metal, jewelry, as well as specialty food items, fine art, and West Virginia books and recordings. There are five resident artisan studios and most weekends from Spring through Fall there are also craft demonstrations.

Andy Sheetz., a toy-maker from St. Albans, WV shows us how to make one of his signature toys. The simulated fishing experience titled Gone Fishin' uses one magnet through the mouth of a wooden fish and another at the end of a wooden rod and hook. When the polar opposite ends meet it creates a fish catching experience for the user!

I wasn't able to identify all the artist who made the objects shown. I'd recommend a visit to Tamarack. We ran across this place totally by accident. It's a very cool place, right at exit 45 on the Virginia Turnpike. We had a lot of fun and a great meal there and Trish bought a new Bowed Psaltery and wound up playing with the luthier who made it.

A drive around Beckley, West Virginia

This is a nostalgic drive for me. I used to live in the Beckley area. When I returned in 2017, I decided to drive around a few places that used to be familiar: the shopping malls, the skating rink, old restaurants and old neighborhoods. Now, many of these places have changed. If you aren't familiar with Beckley, this video probably won't mean much to you. But if you're from there, I hope that you'll see a few things you remember, and enjoy the ride.

I made this trip in August-September 2017. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).
