Pit Stop for the Soul: Tamontaka Grotto
Tamontaka Grotto
Our Lady of Lourdes replica.
People who come to Cotabato City or those who have never set foot on this historical place have a lot of misconceptions and fears. The disparity between Christians and Muslims is always perceived as something terrifying. The atrocities that are often published in broadsheets or broadcasted both over the radio and TV have created a stigma for travelers and tourists alike. As for the locals, these have become part of their daily lives. Whether there are some realities behind these stories depending on how one perceives them, there is still one symbol of hope and refuge for everyone. This is the Tamontaka Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto.
Run by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI), a Catholic religious congregation specializing in difficult missions, this replica of the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto in France is peacefully and aptly laid in this part of Muslim Mindanao within Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao, around 20 minutes from downtown. This is an oasis. Those who take refuge can be relieved both in body and soul. It is a sacred ground as well as a recreation area for children. It could also be a place for families where they could pray together, play together and enjoy each other’s presence in the midst of a coiffured landscape of huge trees and forest, ornamental plants and bermuda grasses.
There’s the Small World, a modest amusement park for kids. There’s the mini zoo, which houses mostly birds, reptiles and others exotic animals. There’s the diorama. It depicts the lives of the native inhabitants of nearby places. There’s the Santa Claus museum where different decorations and symbolisms of Christmas are beautifully displayed. There’s the Creation Story depicted in colorful sculptures.
Part of the forest park is the OMI Postulancy and the Novitiate where young men who want to be God’s shepherd are raised and shaped. One can expect total silence. Only the sounds of nature prevail. Hence, it is an absolutely ideal place for recollections and retreats, for personal reflection and prayer.
For the Catholics, a Via Crusis with large wood carvings fixed uponTamontaka Grotto concrete foundation is stationed along the cemented path down to the grotto. Situated on higher ground, a huge and tall replica of the Resurrection culminates the Station of the Cross.
The highlight of the park, of course, is the grotto itself. Down along the end of the pavement stands the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in a cave-like limestone enclosure while Saint Bernadette humbly kneels down below. Gigantic trees of different kinds like acacia and narra surround the area, giving ample shade even at noontime. A terraced landscape on a slope sits like a grandstand for the entire grotto. Here, special masses are celebrated such as big OMI celebrations.
I have been to this sanctuary many times. But every time I take a visit, there is a sense of renewal and rejuvenation. The serenity of this place is like no other. I am also blessed that day to have met Fr. Larry de Guia, OMI Provincial Superior, a priest doctor (would you believe he’s an ob-gyn) whom I have been wishing to meet before I left Manila.
To get to Tamontaka Grotto:
1) Take a tricycle from the Awang Airport to Sinsuat Avenue, which is a junction on the way to Koronadal City and Upi, Maguindanao. Fare is P10.
2) Ride a jeep towards the downtown area. Tell the driver to drop you off at the grotto. Fare is P7.
3) If coming from the city proper, take a jeep bound for Awang Airport. Again, just tell the driver to drop you there. Fare is P15.
4) There is a P20 entrance fee for adults and P10 for kids.
Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.
