October webinar with Jarkko from Tampere Library in Finland!
We were super excited to host Jarko Rikkila from Tampere City Library in Finland for our October webinar.
Jarkko is the head of music and magazine services in the Main Library Metso of Tampere City Library in Finland.
In his presentation, Jarkko will talk about the new ways in which music library work can be done. The consumption of music has changed dramatically in the digital age and the workers in the music department are responsible for answering this challenge creatively. The solutions can be found in the music talk for school children, co-operation with music festivals and the Metso LIVE concept. The music department also lends musical instruments and provides a music studio for customers.
Metso LIVE is a unique library concept combining library customers, live music, library collections and social media. Since the first event, many famous Finnish singers and songwriters and bands from many musical genres have visited the Metso Library's stage.
Metso LIVE's specialty is that the guests share their book, music and movie recommendations in an interview hosted by a staff librarian before the live gig.
The success of the new music library model and the innovating approach of Metso LIVE got the Library Developer of the Year award (given by the Ministry of Education and Culture) in 2015. Social media services like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are used for marketing and sharing Metso LIVE content in various and colourful ways. In 2016 the music department started HD quality live streaming on YouTube, leading to an unprecedented way to approach library customers in the digital world.

I visited the Tampere University Library. In Finland even university libraries are free for everyone. Unlike in Turku the library seems to have open shelves, i. e. you may pick up your book by yourself. The library seems to be very modern and gave me a posite picture.
