Tamsui District (Hokkien POJ: Tām-chúi; Hokkien Tâi-lô: Tām-tsuí; Mandarin Pinyin: Dànshuǐ) is a sea-side district in New Taipei, Taiwan. It is named after the Tamsui River; the name means fresh water. The town is popular as a site for viewing the sun setting into the Taiwan Strait. Though modest in size (population 162,441), it has a large role in Taiwanese culture.

Cultural Park HAKKA 107.02 Taipei City | Cultural Park & Theater Center ????????????
Located at the heart of bustling Taipei City center in Zhongzheng District close to Gongguan Night Market, Taipei Water Park and National Taiwan University, the newly opened Taipei City Hakka Cultural Park can simply be visited via Taipei MRT Danshui Red Line to MRT Taipower Building Station.
Etablished at the former site of Taipei City Children’s Museum of Transportation, Taipei City Hakka Cultural Park covers an area about 4.03 hectares comprised of a complete combination of Hakka themed areas include Cross-Dike Platform, Ecosystem Trench, Food Court, Hakka Theatre, Oblation Furnace, Pavilion of Bagon, Rural Experience Zone and Tabacco Building.
The Cross-Dike Platform within the Taipei City Hakka Cultural Park together with bike trails nearby forms a bike-friendly area where visitors may experience biking from the busy city center to immerse oneself in Hakka ambience, and further connected to the Riverside Park through a cross-platform dike that extends to the Danshui River area.
Ecosystem Trench is an environmentally-friendly area with energy conserving plant irrigation channels. A wide collection of plants can be found in this area include Water primrose, Eurasian watermilfoil, Sedge, Wite ginger lily and many other plants that represent Hakka people.
Food Court serves a wide array of Hakka specials to fulfill your taste buds. The Food Court area is designed with floor-to-ceiling windows, where one may sample Hakka cuisines while appreciating the surrounding beauties outside.
The Hakka Theatre is where visitor may enjoy Hakka traditional performances and operas that are mostly performed during banquets and religious ceremonies. Hakka music is composed by 8 major tones include gold, stone, silk, bamboo, gourd, clay, leather and wood that well-integrate with the original Hakka music.
Oblation Furnace, also known as the Holy Monument Pavilion, represents the respect of Hakka people toward scholars and knowledge. Back in the past, each Hakka household keeps a waste-paper basket under the family’s altar to keep the papers that were no more needed. An elder would collect and gather the papers to incinerate at the Oblation Furnace, which has became a symbol of the Hakka people to show their respect towards scholars and knowledge.
Pavilion of Bagon worships the Earth God, also known as Bagon. The Earth God is respected as the most important patron saint in Hakka’s culture. The Pavilion of Bagon was found in small scale using stones or woods.
Rural Experience Zone is where visitors may experience traditional farm and agricultural life of the Hakka people. Star fruits, longan, guava, banana and a number of fruit trees are available here.
Tabacco Building features the old features of tobacco industry to represent the hardworking characteristic of the Hakka people. As tobacco industry fetched a higher price than other crops back in old days, many Hakka families chose to plant tobacco, and tobacco barns became an indentifying marker of the Hakka villages.

Taiwan Impression: Tamsui
Tamsui District (Chinese: 淡水區, formerly Tamshui Township) is a sea-side district in New Taipei City in northern Taiwan (ROC). It is named after the Tamsui River; the name means fresh water. The town is popular as a site for viewing the sun setting into the Taiwan Strait. Though modest in size (population 130,105), the district is home to three universities (Aletheia University, Tamkang University, and St. John's University) and has a large role in Taiwanese culture.
The Spanish arrived in the area of Tamsui in the 17th century. In the fall of 1629, the Spanish established the first major non-aboriginal settlement comprising the town and mission of Santo Domingo. The Spanish occupied northern Taiwan for the purpose of securing Spanish interests in the Philippines against the Dutch (who were already established in the South of Taiwan by then), the British, and the Portuguese, as well as for facilitating trade with China and Japan.
In 1641, the Spanish were expelled from Taiwan by the Dutch. The Spanish had already abandoned their settlement in Tamsui in 1638 and the Dutch built a new fort which they named Fort Anthonio (after the Governor-General of the Dutch East India Company Anthonio van Diemen). It is today known as Angmo Sing, POJ: âng mô sîng(ch: 紅毛城, literally, the Fortress of the Red-haired ones) and is the main building of the Fort San Domingo museum complex. In addition to pacifying the aboriginal tribes in the area, the Dutch also encouraged the immigration and settlement of the area by Han Chinese, as well as expanding the production and trade of sulfur, animal skins, and other indigenous resources.
The Dutch left Taiwan in 1661 following their defeat by Koxinga, who continued the policy of increasing Han Chinese immigration until the defeat of his descendants by the Qing Dynasty.

Decided to utilize the HTC Re that I just bought to film every bit of details Kevin and I shared during his 5 day visit in Taiwan. It was short so we couldn't really get out of Taipei except for the bus ride to Keelung the port. Kevin was badly burnt because he refused to use sunscreen and it was at least over 30 celcius everyday when we were out...!
Songshan Cultural Park has grown to be one of the most popular place to chill for Taipers just recently since it was actually an abandoned tobacco factory back in the days.
Here's a bit of the history from the official website:
This location has transformed through history since 1937 as the “Taiwan Sōtokufu Tobacco Monopoly Bureau” during the Japanese colonial time, and after restoration, it was taken over by the Taiwan Monopoly Bureau and renamed the “Taiwanese Provincial Tobacco and Alcohol Monopoly Bureau Songshan Plant”. In 2001, it was appointed by the Taipei City Government as the No. 99 cultural heritage site of the city and renamed the “Songshan Cultural and Creative Park”. This site was once home to the first modernized tobacco Factory in Taiwan, which created tremendous economic value to the nation. On November 15th, 2011, after it officially opened to the public, it has now been transformed into a creative hub of Taiwan.
The concept of an “industrial village” was employed during the initial development of the Songshan Tobacco Factory, and besides the production line, the benefits and needs of the plant’s employees were also taken into consideration for the design of the site. With its large open spaces and courtyards, the site was a pioneering design for industrial plants at that time.
Its architectural style belongs to the genre of “Japanese Early Modernism”, with emphasis placed on horizontal lines, simple classic shapes, and refined workmanship. The buildings were considered to be an exceptional model for industrial plants in that era. The boiler room, mechanical maintenance factory, and tobacco Factory were completed in 1939, and rolled tobaccos began production in October of the same year, with 1200 workers hired in its initial stage. In 1940, the office building and inspection room were completed, with the construction of the entire plant completed in the span of three years and three months.

Sakura or cherry blossom season is a huge draw in East Asia. Japan has the world's attention when it comes to sakura viewing. Even Korea has a popular cherry blossom season but few outside of the region are familiar with Taiwan's cherry blossom season. Although not anywhere near the same scale as Japan's giant Sakura Garden there are some beautiful spots that feature sakura against stunning nature backdrops and traditional temple complexes. One of the most popular places to see the cherry blossoms in Northern Taiwan, an earlier season than Japan's, is at Danshui District's Wuji Tianyuan Temple featuring the striking Temple of Heaven Pagoda. The pagoda is in the style of Beijing's Temple of Heaven. This is a Taoist temple complex with the main temple completed in 1972 and the 5 story pagoda finished in 1992.
During the Sakura season that begins in late January, shuttle buses head directly for the temple of the Tamshui MRT Station, at the very end of the red line. It's still a beautiful temple complex worthy of a visit anytime of year but sakura season offers the most convenient public transportation. During the off season buses stop aproximately 2 kilometers way, so you'll either have to walk or take a taxi from the Tamshui MRT station. Other sakura spots in Taiwan include Yamingshan National Park, and Wuling Farm, and Alishan National Park in central Taiwan. 18:41 My favorite local restaurant in Taipei. Unlike many other places that I've enjoyed, I typically enjoy only 1 of their dishes. This shop (大滿-米粉湯), on the other hand, I enjoy most of their food. I typically order rice, tofu, seaweed, lettuce, spinach, and their fishball soup. Oh, and fried garlic on top of the vegetables/rice! I also like how the food taste very homemade, how they don't rush, and how it's quite quiet, as it's not overly packed with people, typically.
The only thing that would make this local shop supreme is if they had dumplings AND if they were open longer. They're typically open from late afternoon to 9pm, I believe. In the morning, a different shop usually occupies the same building, and that shop name is 可口豬肝湯麻醬麵.

Located in Tamsui, New Taipei City (Taipei County), Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf is one of the popular scenic spots in Taipei since its opening in 2001. It is also ranked at the second place of viewing the most beautiful sunset spot by Japanese traveling magazine TRiPORT. It was established for two reasons: fishing and sightseeing. The sunset view here at the Fisherman’s Wharf is considered as one of the eight famous must-see sceneries of Tamsui. The Lover’s Bridge is another must-see spot of the wharf, and visitors may see the changes of light projecting on the bridge at night. Couples and families are fond to relax and enjoy their leisure time here. There are many seafood restaurants and coffee shops nearby so visitors may taste fresh seafood or drink coffee while appreciating the beautiful sceneries.
