「紅毛城」位於北台灣的淡水鎮，是台灣現存最古老的建築之一，國家頒訂的一級古蹟，也是淡水歷史文化的表徵。自從十六世紀新航路發現以後，西歐的航海強權國家逐漸由海路到東方尋求貿易利益，荷蘭與西班牙這兩個國家遂在那時分別登陸了台灣，並各自劃定範圍佔領統治，荷蘭人控制南部，而西班牙人佔有北部，為了鞏固統治權力，他們都選擇港口要塞作為據點，建造了防衛性極高的城堡，荷蘭人於1624年在今天的台南市安平建造了「熱蘭遮城」，即現存的「安平古堡」，而西班牙人則在1628年在淡水建造了「聖多明哥城」。1642年，荷蘭人北上驅逐了西班牙人，佔領了聖多明哥城並重建該城，加強主城結構，建造成堅固的石堡，成為紅毛城的主體建築，當時台灣人稱荷蘭人為「紅毛」，因此「紅毛城」之名也沿用至今。到了十七世紀，原為航海強權的荷蘭及西班牙已被英國和法國所取代，英國尤其注意台灣的經濟利益，乃於1867年與清廷訂立紅毛城永久租約，將紅毛城改設為「英國領事館」，並大肆整修，在東側增建一棟紅磚洋房做為官邸，紅色的拱廊及綠瓶欄杆，與紅毛城相互輝映、增色不少。
將近四百年歷史的「紅毛城」可說是淡水最耀眼的古蹟建築，全區分為紅毛城及領事館官邸兩部分。紅毛城當初原為軍事需求而建造，樓頂的巨型旗杆高十二公尺，外牆厚達兩公尺，城下的古砲則是清廷駐防淡水的水師守備營所留下的遺物，後為英國人搬運至此做為裝飾之用。至於現在所謂的領事館官邸，係建於1891年，是一棟兩層樓的典型英國殖民地建築式樣洋房。主要建築材料的紅磚遠從廈門運來，是一種中國式的手工磚，屋頂是閩南紅瓦，但屋內彩色地磚是爪哇產品。一樓使用弧形拱，曲度較緩，二樓迴廊使用半圓拱，曲度較大，上下有別，而且互相對齊，具有力學上的穩定感，是一棟施工考究、手法精雅的洋樓。「紅毛城」一直到1980年才由我國收回接管，現在內部規劃為文物陳列館，展示台灣開拓史料及圖片，豐富的文獻資料與傢俱擺設一併展出，讓遊客除了能認識紅毛城的變遷歷史外，更可瞭解台灣早期的對外關係，現在已是觀光客到淡水旅遊的必到景點。

滬尾砲台（英語：Hobe Fort），又作滬尾礮臺，位於今台灣新北市淡水區，為建造於1886年的火炮砲台，佔地約8公頃。該砲台為台灣第一位巡撫劉銘傳所主導建造，其建造目的是為了防衛台灣淡水港。
該砲台雖停用多年，但因為長期屬軍事要塞，因此建築大致完整，門額上仍留存劉銘傳親筆題之「北門鎖鑰」石碑，也保留了砲台旁兩道城牆及砲陣地數座；但砲台使用主炮均已遭日本人拆離，現已佚失。目前中華民國內政部將砲台列為二級古蹟。
Hu-tail fort, but also for the Hutao taiwan, located in Taiwan's Tamsui New Taipei City, built in 1886 for the artillery fort, covering about 8 hectares. The fort was led by Liu Ming Chuan, Taiwan's first governor, and was built to defend Taiwan's freshwater port.
Although it has been suspended for many years, the fort has remained generally intact because of its military fortifications for a long time. It still retains the North Gate Lock Key stone inscribed by Liu Ming-chuan on the gate and also retains two forts and artillery positions next to the Fort. However, The use of the main gun has been detained by the Japanese, is now lost. At present, the ROC Interior Department classified the fort as a second-level monument.
