The Beauty Of Nordkyn - The Road To Nervei
Our resent hike was the road to Nervei. We did not have much time so we could not go all the way. But it is on my list for this summer. Hoping to get some good drone shots. 11.2 km this day and we are in good shape after a warm summer.
Nervei (Northern Sami: Njereveadji) is a small Sami village in the Gamvik Municipality in Finnmark county, Norway. It is located along the shore of Langfjorden, an arm of Tanafjorden in Eastern Finnmark. The nearby village of Laggo is located to the south.
The main industries in Nervei are sea harvesting and farming. The main exports are cod, dried fish, king crabs, sheep, and products from mohair wool.
There is no official road going to the village yet, so commuting is done by boat from Skjånes or Smalfjord. The residents have been trying to get a road connection for many years, and some work has begun on building a road from Rv. 888 at Reinoksevannet to Nervei. Currently, the dirt-gravel road is open during most of the year when the weather is good, but the road is not high quality.

Mari Boine - Guovssahasaid ájagáttis (By the source of Aurora B)
Mari Boine, previously known as Mari Boine Persen, (born 8 November 1956) is a Norwegian Sami musician known for having added jazz and rock to the yoiks of her native people. Gula Gula (first released by Iđut, 1989, later re-released by Real World) was her breakthrough release, and she continued to record popular albums throughout the 1990s.
Boine was born and raised in Gámehisnjárga, a village on the river Anarjohka in Karasjok municipality in Finnmark, in the far north of Norway.
Her parents were Sami (Lapps). They made a living from salmon fishing and farming. She grew up steeped in the region's natural environment, but also amidst the strict Laestadian Christian movement with discrimination against her people: for example, singing in the traditional Sami joik style was considered 'the devil's work'. The local school that she attended reflected a very different world from her family's. All the teaching was in Norwegian.
As she grew up she started to rebel against being an inferior Lappish woman in Norwegian society. For instance, the booklet accompanying the CD 'Leahkastin' (Unfolding) is illustrated with photographs with racist captions like 'Lapps report for anthropological measurement', 'Typical female Lapp', 'A well-nourished Lapp'; and it ends with a photo of Boine herself as a girl, captioned 'Mari, one of the rugged Lapp-girl types' and attributed '(Photo: Unidentified priest)'.
She was asked to perform at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, but refused because she perceived the invitation as an attempt to bring a token minority to the ceremonies.
In 2003 Boine was awarded the Nordic Council Music Prize. She was appointed knight, first class in the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav for her artistic diversity on September 18, 2009.
Her songs are strongly rooted in her experience of being in a despised minority. For example, the song 'Oppskrift for Herrefolk' ('Recipe for a Master Race') on her breakthrough CD 'Gula Gula', sung in Norwegian unlike the rest of the songs which are in Sami, speaks directly of 'discrimination and hate', and ironically recommends ways of oppressing a minority: 'Use bible and booze and bayonet'; 'Use articles of law against ancient rights'.
Her other songs are more positive, often singing of the beauty and wildness of Sapmi (Lapland). The title track of 'Gula Gula' asks the listener to remember 'that the earth is our mother'.
She sings in a traditional folk style, using the yodelling 'yoik' voice, with a range of accompanying instruments and percussion. For example, on 'Gula Gula' the instruments used are drum, guitar, electric bass clarinet, dozo n'koni, ganga, claypot, darboka, tambourine, seed rattles, cymbal, clarinet, piano, frame drum, saz, drone drum, hammered dulcimer, bosoki, overtone flute, bells, bass, quena, charango and antara.
Driving through Nuorgam, Finland!
Join us from the drivers seat as we make our journey through the magical little village of Nuorgam (Njuorggán) in the municipality of Utsjoki.
This little village has a special place in the heart of every man, woman and child in northern Norway, because in this village they have treats for everyone, old or young. Wine and spirits and tobacco and cognac and meat, chocolate and winegum. Everything the heart can desire.
Nuorgam is to Norwegians what Tijuana is to Californians...
Winter in the Heart of Lapland, Finland (Utsjoki)
Winter in the heart of Lapland, Finland (Utsjoki) // Utsjoki is a small municipality of 1200 people located in the very north of Finland. It is surrounded by Finnish and Norwegian mountains and the Teno river runs just between the border of these two countries. Utsjoki is especially known for extremely beautiful landscapes, wonderful people and the silence of the nature. One can see very strong northern lights almost every night throughout the winter if the sky is clear enough. In the summer time the sun doesn't set at all leading to nightless nights which are a totally unique thing to experience. Between summer and winter there is the gorgeous autumn when the nature turns completely red and orange because of the plants starting to get ready for the winter. Utsjoki is the definition of true Lapland and it's one of the few places everyone should visit at some point in their lifetime.

Northern Norway
Northern Norway is the geographical region of Norway, consisting of the three northernmost counties Nordland, Troms and Finnmark, in total about 35% of the Norwegian mainland. Some of the largest towns in Northern Norway are Mo i Rana, Bodø, Narvik, Harstad, Tromsø and Alta. Northern Norway is often described as the land of the midnight sun and the land of the northern lights. Further north, halfway to the North Pole, is the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, traditionally not regarded as part of Northern Norway.
The region is multi-cultural, housing not just Norwegians but also the indigenous Sami people, Norwegian Finns and Russian populations. The Norwegian language dominates in most of the area; Sami speakers are mainly found inland and in some of the fjord areas of Nordland, Troms and particularly Finnmark – though ethnic Sámi who do not speak the language are found more or less everywhere in the region. Finnish is spoken in only a few communities in the east of Finnmark.
