Yuri on Ice Museum in Sendai, Japan!!
My experience at the Yuri on Ice Museum, which is a limited time event in Sendai. The museum does travel all over Japan, and you can find information here:
I was not allowed to record IN the actual museum, so do not expect that. But I can show you some of the stuff I got from it.

Sendai Aoba Matsuri Documentary (Miyagi) - Tohoku Traveler - 仙台青葉まつり - Travel in Tohoku
What to do at a Japanese Matsuri (Festival)?
Every third weekend of May, Sendai holds one of its biggest festivals, the Aoba Matsuri. An average number of 900,000 people visit this festival every year. The city center transforms into a very colorful and cheerful area. In this video you will see and learn about various things: The big parade at Jozenji Dori (the beautiful avenue lined with zelkova trees), what Japanese festival food looks like, what the Suzume Odori (Sparrow Dance) is, who Date Masamune is…. and many many more things!
It was especially cool to see my friends who were part of the Tohoku University festival team. You and all the other performers practiced hard and did a great job!
The dance performances of the Tohoku University team are at the following minute marks: 02:45, 09:23, 11:23, 15:12, 18:04.
I wanted to take enough time to explain the history and the various activities you can see and do there. Especially aimed at foreign viewers who wonder what a Japanese festival (Matsuri) looks like! My hope is that, after watching this video, you may want to visit Sendai!

One of the BEST SUMMER FESTIVALS in Japan: Shitamachi Tanabata Matsuri (下町七夕まつり)
Easily one of the best summer festivals in Tokyo I have ever been to: The Shitamachi Tanabata Festival ( 下町七夕まつり )
Shitamachi (下町), literally under-city, is a traditional name for the Eastern side of Tokyo, which has traditionally been poorer in the past. It includes Chuo-ku, Taito-ku, Adachi-ku, Edogawa-ku, parts of Chiyoda-ku and more generally everything around Sumida river and Arakawa river. The festival itself is centered around the old center of shitamachi, namely Ueno and Asakusa, which are in Taito-ku.
Here is a link for everyone, who wants to learn more about Shitamachi and the opposite, Yamanote:
The tanabata festival has its origins in the Chinese Qixi Festival. It is probably best known for the colorful Streamers (吹き流し Fukinagashi) which serve as decoration all over the festival location. Another important component are paper strips (短冊 Tanzaku) which are attached to trees with wishes and thanks-messages on them.
Of course, you can also see a plethora of food stalls with Japanese street food and typical Japanese summer drinks, as well as unique dance performances. These often include taiko performances.
I have captured two wonderful performances in this video. One quite long taiko performance, as well as a stilt dance performance. You can see both in full in two other videos:
Taiko performance:
Stilt dance performance:
The shitamachi tanabata matsuri is located exactly between Ueno and Asakusa station, following the famous Kappabashi Dogu Street (合羽橋道具街). Outside of the festival season, it is known for being a good place to buy kitchen utensils, especially knives. If you want to buy a Japanese kitchen knife, this is the place to go in Tokyo!
More and yearly updated information can be found on the official website of the Shitamachi Tanabata Matsuri:

Let’s Go! Adventuring in Akiu
Akiu is a famous hot spring town in Miyagi prefecture located South-West of Sendai. It is accessible from Sendai Station through public transportation by taking the JR Senzan Line to Ayashi Station, then transferring to a bus for 25 minutes South to Akiu.
Living so close to Akiu, I have been fortunate to visit many times. Every time that I have visited there is something new to discover. Not shown in the video but other recommended highlights from past trips here are the Kaleidoscope Museum, Akiu Craft Park, Akiu Winery and Akiu Great Falls. Akiu is beautiful in every season and with its many different hot spring hotels, it is definitely worth it to visit more than once.
Locations visited: Akiu Sato Center, Saichi Shufu No Mise, Sakan Onsen, Rai Rai Gorge, Yumoto Park
The Let's Go Series was produced to inspire my ES children to get outside and explore. Only basic English is used in the videos so that children learning English as a second language can follow along.

Sendai Loople Bus Tour | Japan 2016 | Episode 13 Pt 1
We woke up to find the rain we expected, but that didn't dampen our excitement to get out and explore Sendai. Luckily, the rain cleared by the time we finished breakfast and started to head out for the day.
Sendai has an amazing setup for tourists, getting around to all the major sights is a breeze thanks to what they call the Loople Bus, a sightseeing bus which follows the same loop all day. The bus terminal where you can purchase the Loople Bus pass is located below the pedestrian deck out front of Sendai Station, a Google map link is below.
We started our tour at Kyogamine Hill where to found the Zuiho-ji Temple and the primary reason we came to this spot, Zuihōden Mausoleum where rests the remains of Date Masamune, the first feudal lord of Japan. We were taken aback how peaceful it was wandering around the sights as it was only a 10 minute bus ride from the centre of Sendai.
Next up was a visit to the Sendai City Museum where you’ll get a peak into the early years at Sendai, and gain a better appreciation for Date Masamune. There are lots of old maps on display showing the progress of Sendai over the centuries. There is also a few spectacular samurai armours on display including the famous one of Date Masamune, crescent moon helmet and all.
By the end of part 1 we were making our way up the hill to the city of the Sendai Castle. Stay tuned to part 2 for fantastic views of Sendai and another peaceful temple in the middle of the city.

Trip to Sendai - Day 1 | Loople Bus City Tour + Date Busyoutai (伊達武将隊) Tanabata Performance
No matter how many times I visited this city, it won’t ever be enough. It’s one of my favorite city in the world! (I’m not exaggerating at all). The city is so beautiful with distinct four-season sceneries. Also, if you’re by any chance following my blog posts, I’ve described my personal reason on why I really love this city haha ٩(^ᴗ^)۶
[Sendai Trip - Day 1]
I bought Loople Bus Ticket and tour around the city the whole day. Since it was on Tanabata Festival, they put on beautiful decorations in the tourist spots and also in the streets, it was so beautiful!
My itinerary was:
- Zuihoden Mausoleum (瑞鳳殿)
- Goshikinuma Pond (五色沼)
- Sendai International Center (仙台国際センター) + lunch at café mozart Metro
- Aoba (Sendai) Castle (青葉城)
- Osaki Hachimangu Shrine (大崎八幡宮)
Also, I met Date Busyoutai members! They were all so interesting and kind! Their special performance for tanabata is really cool too. The best part was, I met Date Masamune! Since he is my all time favorite warlord, I was so moved. This summer holiday is really unforgettable ♪
