Finding an Old Kauri Winch - Opononi, New Zealand
Looking for Antique Bottles and other Artefacts...
An unexpected find was a Vintage Winch used in the days of the Kauri logging...
No idea how it would have gotten to where it is, as it a rather heavy piece of machinery...
The water is rather dark and murky due to a few days of rain and winds...

Tane Mahuta, New Zealand
The tallest kauri tree
The Father of the Forest
Tane Mahuta, Lord of the Forest, New Zealand
You are in the presence of one of the most ancient of trees, and sacred. And you feel it. I knew this largest of all Kauri trees would be big, but when I entered the platform and saw other tourists sitting in silence, gazing upward, and then turn around to find myself confronted with the tree itself, I broke the silence with an irrepressible Oh...My...God. After the initial shock... shhhh Then bask. You will never encounter another tree like this one. Is it an organic being, or a mountain?
The original Maori chant can be found here:
I don't know the meaning of the words. I hope they are appropriate to the majesty of this tree.
Kauri trees are dying. Please be careful when walking in their forests. Sterilize your shoes.

Worldwide Voyage | Tāne Mahuta
Aloha! This is Pomai Bertelmann, and I am crewmember onboard Hōkūleʻa for the Worldwide Voyage. Today, the ʻohana (family) is going to Hokianga on the west side of this large island of Aotearoa where we will be checking out a very special feature - Tāne Mahuta. We are in the Waipoua Forest Reserve. This forest reserve is the home of the largest tract of native and intact forests in the North Island of Aotearoa. Tāne Mahuta is the largest kauri tree that lives here in this forest. What I am particularly overwhelmed with by this ecosystem is that it is very much thriving because of these overgrowth forests. This place has the ability to sustain itself. Mālama Honua is not just about the canoe traveling around the world. Mālama Honua is how we have the ability to thrive if we work together.
How do you mālama honua (care for our Island Earth)? This is the question we ask when we arrive in each port, where crewmembers meet and interact with local communities. The resulting “Stories of Place” highlight local solutions that can be applied to global problems. We invite you to gather solutions from your community and share your Story of Place with us!

Far North Run - Day 2 (Part Three)
This is Day 2 of our 3 wheel adventure to the Far North of New Zealand. In this video, we travel from Opononi to Twin Bridges via Kaikohe. Twin Bridges is an unusual road bridge designed to span two rivers at their fork. The bridge crosses the Awarua and Mangakahia Rivers. After stopping for a drone launch we make our way to Mangawhai Heads and then back home to Huapai. We hope you enjoy the video.
