0:00 BBC: British tourist killed on Christmas eve
Journalists in the southern Sri Lankan town of Tangalle have received death threats following their coverage of an attack on a tourist couple at a holiday resort.
Police said they have identified all suspects of the attack in which a British national was killed and his friend, a Russian national, sustained injuries.
The victim Kuram Shaikah Zaman, a British national of Israeli origin, is an ICRC volunteer working in the Gaza strip.
Police spokesman SP Ajith Rohana told BBC Sandeshaya that the post-mortem conducted at Matara hospital was told that the victim has died as a result of being attacked by a sharp weapon and he was also shot at, he said.
British, Russian nationals
It was the assault by the sharp weapon that has caused his death, said SP Ajith Rohana.
Eyewitness said Tangalle Pradesheeya Sabha chairman, Sampath Vidanapathirana, was seen having a row with the couple prior to the attack at Nature restaurant in Medilla.
Police will arrest all suspects who have been identified, said SP Ajith Rohana who declined to reveal the names of suspects.
Victoria Alexandrovna, 23, is being treated in Karapitiya hospital, Galle at the intensive care unit.
Sunil Jayasekara, convenor of Free Media Movement told BBC Sandeshaya that journalists in the area have received threats after reporting the incident.
This incident illustrates the underlying corruption and hidden dangers in Sri Lanka.
Whatever you do, do not cross the thugs around local politicians and businessmen. You may come across them in restaurants, nightclubs, bars and casinos. It seems that this unfortunate couple made the mistake of 'dissing' them. They cannot be seen to lose face in public and so the tragedy took place.
These people have almost complete impunity and can do what they like knowing that the police will do nothing against them.

Hotels in Tangalle
Tangalle is a big town in Hambantota District. The name of the town in Sinhala means projected rock, a reference to the rocks which form the coastline in the town area, which contrasts with the sandy beach of the surrounding areas. Another rationale is that the name is derived from ran-gala or golden rock, which relates to a local legend that a holy man once ate a meal there and the rock was turned to gold. Tangalle is a regionally important fishing port and a center of tourism. In the city center there is an old Dutch fort which is used as a prison today. Tangalle owns some of the best hotels in sri lanka.

_Le Lipton seat d’Haputale

Sri Lanka (from the Sanskrit Venerable Island[citation needed]), officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (pronounced /ˌʃriːˈlɑːŋkɑː/, Sinhala: , Tamil: இலங்கை; known as Ceylon (/sɪˈlɒn/) before 1972 and as Taprobane (/təˈprɒbəniː/) in ancient times), is an island country in South Asia, located about 31 kilometres (19.3 mi) off the southern coast of India. It is home to around twenty million people.
As a result of its location in the path of major sea routes, Sri Lanka is a strategic naval link between West Asia and South East Asia.[citation needed] It has also been a center of the Buddhist religion and culture from ancient times as well as being a bastion of Hinduism.[8] The Sinhalese community forms the majority of the population; Tamils, who are concentrated in the north and east of the island, form the largest ethnic minority. Other communities include Moors, Burghers, Kaffirs, Malays and the indigenous Wanniyala-Aetto people.
The country is famous for the production and export of tea, coffee, coconuts, rubber and cinnamon - which is native to the country.[9] The natural beauty of Sri Lanka's tropical forests, beaches and landscape, as well as its rich cultural heritage, make it a world famous tourist destination.[citation needed] The island also boasts the first female Prime Minister in the world, Sirimavo Bandaranaike.[10]
After over two thousand years of rule by local kingdoms, parts of Sri Lanka were colonized by Portugal and the Netherlands beginning in the 16th century, before control of the entire country was ceded to the British Empire in 1815.[citation needed] During World War II, Sri Lanka served as an important base for Allied forces in the fight against the Japanese Empire.[11] A nationalist political movement arose in the country in the early 20th century with the aim of obtaining political independence, which was eventually granted by the British after peaceful negotiations in 1948.
Every year on or about April 13 Sinhala and Tamil people celebrate Sinhala and Tamil New Year Festival, and Muslims celebrate Ramadan. Esala Perahera (A-suh-luh peh-ruh-ha-ruh) is the grand festival of Esala held in Sri Lanka. It is very grand with elegant costumes. Happening in July or August in Kandy, it has become a unique symbol of Sri Lanka. It is a Buddhist festival consisting of dances and richly decorated elephants. There are fire-dances, whip-dances, Kandian dances and various other cultural dances. The elephants are usually adorned with lavish garments. The festival ends with the traditional 'diya-kepeema'. The elephant is paraded around the city bearing the tooth of Buddha. However the new year for tamils have been established as being on January 14 from this year.
Most Sri Lankan cities and towns are connected by the Sri Lanka Railways, the state-run national railway operator. The first railway line was inaugurated on April 26, 1867, linking Colombo with Kandy. The total length of Sri Lankan roads exceeds 11,000 kilometres (6,840 mi), with a vast majority of them being paved. The government has launched several highway projects to bolster the economy and national transport system, including the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway, the Colombo-Kandy (Kadugannawa) Expressway, the Colombo-Padeniya Expressway and the Outer Circular Highway to ease Colombo's traffic congestion. There are also plans to build a major bridge connecting Jaffna to the Indian city of Chennai.
The Ceylon Transport Board is the state-run agency responsible for operating public bus services across the island. Sri Lanka also maintains 430 kilometres (270 mi) of inland waterways. It has three deep-water ports at Colombo, Trincomalee and Galle. There is also a smaller, shallower harbour at Kankesanturai, north of Jaffna. There are twelve paved airports and two unpaved airstrips in the country. SriLankan Airlines is the official national carrier, partly owned and operated by Emirates Airline. It was voted the best airline in South Asia by Skytrax. SriLankan Air Taxi is the smaller, domestic arm of the national carrier, while Expo Aviation and Lankair are private airline companies. The Bandaranaike International Airport is the country's only international airport, located in Katunayaka, 22 kilometres (14 mi) north of Colombo.
