Tangjia River: Safe haven for Eurasian otter
China's rivers and lakes once saw wide distribution of the Eurasian otter, an apex predator found in aquatic ecosystems. This cute but ferocious mammal had disappeared from our sight due to overhunting and habitat destruction.
Sichuan Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve, one of the best places to observe wildlife in China, discovered the surprising existence of Eurasian otters within its territory, sparking a series of efforts to protect the species.
Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve is located in Qingchuan County, Sichuan Province. It is adjacent to Dongyanggou Provincial Nature Reserve in the East and Pingwu County in Mianyang City in the west. With an area of 40,000 hectares, a provincial nature reserve was established in 1978 and promoted to the national level in 1986. The main protected objects are giant pandas and forest ecosystems.
Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve is located in the northern foot of Minshan and the northern part of Longmen Mountain. Its highest peak is 3837 meters above sea level, with a relative height difference of more than 2400 meters. Its topographic conditions are quite complex. There are abundant animal and plant resources in this area, including Davidia involucrata, Lilian incense tree and aquamarine tree. There are more than 20 kinds of animals under national protection, such as giant panda, golden monkey, antelope, clouded leopard and green tail pheasant.
In January 2015, it was selected as the first IUCN Green List.

Injured wild panda undergoes successful operation after life-threatening accident
A wild panda suffering from stomach injuries underwent surgery on Monday and is now said to be in good condition, according to a nature reserve taking care of the mammal in southwest China's Sichuan Province.
The three-year-old male panda, cared for at an improvised ward belonging to Tangjiahe Nature Reserve in Qingchuan County, is receiving regular fluids and is able to move around slowly, nature staff said on Tuesday.
After the emergency surgery, we gave him some antibiotics and an IV infusion. He is doing well at the moment, even though he is a little bit weak due to malnutrition. We have been feeding him with honey water, he can drink around half a litre on his own now, said Chen Limin, deputy director of the reserve's administrative office, who revealed that the panda received around a hundred stitches for his wounds.
