Squeeze Tours The U.S.: “I Think That We're, Probably, a Popular Cult Band”
Squeeze Tours The USA: “I Think That We're, Probably, a Popular Cult Band”
NOTE: Thanks to our subscribers who caught our mistake on Chris' name. I haven't spoken the guys name out loud in 20 years but still got it wrong with a script right in front of me. LOL
August 20, 2019 – It's the 40th anniversary of the two main singer/songwriters and co-founders Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook. The band came in big with their self titled debut album in 1978 but it was their sophomore album, “Cool for Cats” the following year that had some critics comparing Difford and Tilbrook to Lennon and McCartney – this is usually the kiss of death. There were three British hits on that second album, “Up the Junction,””Slap and Tickle” plus the title tune. So far Squeeze has had 12 hits in England and only 2 in the U.S. “Hourglass” from 1987 and “853-5937 the following year though tunes like “Pulling Mussels (From the shell),” “Tempted” and “Cool for Cats” got loads of airplay on FM radio.
Difford told Billboard Magazine they don't always feel that they did the best versions of tunes when they recorded them so expect some changes on their US tour. (they are in Englewood, NJ. Tonight, I don't like looking backwards, mostly, but this being the object of the tour, it was really lovely to do that. To examine the songs and treat them like they were new songs. Some of the versions aren't exactly like the records and probably, where we didn't like the records, they sound a bit different.
Both singer/songwriters have had their own solo careers and that's helped them stay together. Difford said, I think we've managed to get this far by just giving ourselves a lot of space. We don't see each other from one tour to the next and or from one record to the next, and I think that distance and that gap gives you renewed enthusiasm. And a desire to be back in the band that you started when you were 17 years old.” Tilbrook adds, I think that the key to maintaining our partnership is trying our best to work together and I will always be honest with Chris. I've always said that Chris Difford was my biggest influence. I don't believe that any artist can part and parcel themselves up because you either give your all to something or you don't, and we've always given our all to everything we've worked on.
Interestingly Tilbrook, even after 15 albums, doesn't consider Squeeze a heritage act adding, I think that we're, probably, a popular cult band. We never certainly had mass success here at any one time. On the east coast and in the Midwest, maybe Chicago, and the west coast. But we have a hardcore group of people that like us. I'll tell you that there's an interesting thing about streaming now is that there's a whole bunch of kids that are coming to our shows that have nothing to do with parents, I believe. They've discovered us for themselves, because with streaming you just have this whole buffet of stuff.
The guys also said that, Selling records and chart positions is something from the past, like a language I'd almost forgotten about. I suppose as songwriters we're a bit like watchmakers: people don't want new watches anymore but they still want to read the time.” - by John Beaudin

Dolly Parton I Will Always Love You / Hello God Live on Tour 2016
Country stars celebrated Dolly Parton at CMA Awards 50th Anniversary when she took home the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. “Grace and Frankie” star Lily Tomlin presented the award to her “9 to 5” co-star Dolly Parton “for being an iconic artist in country music,” she said. “Dolly is country music, pure and simple.”
Jennifer Nettles and Pentatonix paid tribute to Dolly Parton with an a cappella version of her hit “Jolene.” Reba McEntire then sang “9 to 5” with a full band, followed by Kacey Musgraves, who sang “Here You Come Again.” Carrie Underwood and Martina McBride then came out to join the others for a group rendition of “I Will Always Love You,” which brought tears to Parton’s eyes.
The last time Dolly Parton sang I Will Always Love You was on her Pure & Simple 2016 Tour. The country superstar performed her signature song followed by Hello God/He's Alive on Dolly Parton encore live in concert at sold-out world-famous Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, CA on October 2, 2016. Whitney Houston made Dolly Parton's composition rearrangement of I Will Always Love You her biggest hit from the 1991 film soundtrack The Bodyguard.
Country star Dolly Parton received the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at the 50th annual Country Music Association Awards. Parton receives the CMA award in Nashville on Nov. 2, 2016. Dolly Parton is a nine-time CMA winner, including entertainer of the year.
