europalia.china event: Tangshan Chinese Shadow Puppet Company
The art of Chinese shadow theatre, whose origins go back to the Wanli period of the Ming dynasty, rose to its heights at the end of the Qing dynasty. The Tangshan company, created in 1943, breathed new life into the vast repertoire of Chinese shadow theatre.
At all of its performances, the company and its traditional silhouettes (made of donkey leather) are enthusiastically received by audiences. In 1985, the company took part in the Disney World Show in Florida, the 8th World Theatre Festival in Monaco, and the 7th International Puppet Theatre Festival. In 1987, it took part in the First China National Festival.
In 1992, the company was invited to the Arts Festival of the 11th Asiatic Games in Beijing. This award-winning company is considered to be one of the best shadow theatre troupes in the world.

Tangshan New Town Phoenix
The distinctive and key feature of this proposal is its public core. It provides a signature experience to showcase the site's urban essence intended to make New Town Phoenix a preeminent address of prestige in Tangshan. Parks and squares extend a welcome gesture to visitors and the city of Tangshan in general. Semi-public spaces act as points of encounter for residents and visitors and also serve as green curtains drawn along busy arterials, enhancing the feeling of privacy on the site.
New Town Phoenix represents a joint effort between studio LFA in association with OAD for Vanke's development along with a team of local and international consultants.
Return to Tangsan: Part 3
I was invited to return to Tangshan, China in July 2006 for an exhibition of photos I took of the city in March-April 1972. In July 1976, Tangshan was hit by a devastating earthquake that leveled the city and killed at least 240,000 people according to the official estimate. Unofficial expert estimates put the death toll at about 650,000. My photos were perhaps the only surviving color images of daily life in Tangshan in the years just before the earthquake. In 1972, China was still in the midst of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, Chairman Mao Zedong's ideological crusade to purge the country of all counterrevolutionary and bourgeois elements and to keep the People's Republic on the path to his radical vision of socialism and communism. In that way, too, my photos capture a time long past in China's modern history.
This documentary was made by a crew from China Central Television to be shown on the program Society in the News as part of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the earthquake. It never aired on CCTV because the censors judged it to be too nostalgic...

Steam in China 1997 Part 1
Some of the scenes on Steam in China 1997 parts 1 & 2 were uploaded to YouTube in 2009, size restrictions at that time meant they were only a minute or two long. I have now re-uploaded those scenes together with extra material.

Tangshan colliery.
Anshan steelworks. This massive and heavily polluted steelworks had a rare class PL2 class 2-6-2 and a fleet of SY class 2-8-2s. There was also a selection of steeple cab electric locos.
Yebaishou: Many QJ class 2-10-2 locos were still in action in the Yebaishou area on passenger and freight trains on the CNR main line in 1997. Spirited running by the QJs was often seen. But diesel traction had started to appear.
Pingzhuang mine, a rare KD6 class loco is briefly seen in action.

A Journey to Xiangtangshan
A clip from a video featured in the exhibition Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan, on view at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Feb. 26-July 31, 2011. The four-minute documentary illustrates how the caves thrive as sites of visitation and worship today. Filmed from the perspective of a first-time visitor, it leads viewers from the nearby industrial town of Fengfeng to the centuries-old footpath up to the northern Xiangtangshan caves. It ends with footage of worshipers and tourists at the entrance to the northern group's South Cave. Visit to learn more.
The video was directed and edited by Judy Hoffman, with assistance from Lec Maj, videography; Leslie Simmer and Manol Georgieff, editing; and Jim Morrissette, color correction. Post-production facilities were provided by Kartemquin Films.
