Tanjong Pagar Railway Station Ceasing Operation - 22Jun2011
SINGAPORE: The food stalls at Tanjong Pagar Railway Station will be moving out by Sunday, as the station prepares for its final week of operations.
The last KTM train will depart on June 30.
For the past few weeks, tickets for the Malaysia-bound trains have been selling out, as Singaporeans savour one final trip on the historic railway.
The Tanjong Pagar Railway Station is as famous for its food, as its art-deco facade.
Many say its teh tarik, or milk tea, is one of the best in Singapore.
But there aren't many days left to get a bite there, as stall operators have to vacate by June 26.
The cafeteria bears the name of chief tenant Mahmoodul Hasan, who has been there since 1976.
Like many of the other operators, he is undecided on his plans.
I feel very, very sad. Because it's like my home, Mr Mahmoodul said.
I'm finding a good place. If I get it, I'll continue. If not, then I'll relax!
He added that his tenants have indicated their interest in following him if a good location is found.
Meanwhile, some Singaporeans are hoping to buy train tickets.
All seats for Wednesday's 8am and 1pm trains have been sold, and tickets for the next day were reportedly gone within half an hour.
Mr Teo Juay Tee, who managed to buy tickets, said: I came four times to try to get the ticket, and on the fourth try I got lucky.
I'm already 27 years old and I've never taken the train before, so that's why I'm here to try out the train.
Others who were spotted at the KTM station included a wedding photographer, who joined other shutterbugs in documenting the station's last days.
There was also a souvenir stall in a corner, selling T-shirts, plastic files and mobile phone accessories with the KTM logo.
A resident who lives in an estate near the station, 53-year-old R Kalaichevan, said: When I was five years old, my father brought me here to practise walking.
This was the only shopping centre we know, and every evening, we come here, we watch the trains come in and go off.
From July 1, trains between Singapore and Malaysia will depart from the Woodlands checkpoint.
All immigration procedures will take place there.
The last passenger train will pull out of Tanjong Pagar station for the last time at 10pm on June 30, and tickets are selling fast online.
Malaysian authorities will also hold a send-off party that night, which will end with the Sultan of Johor driving a special train to Johor as a grand finale.
Tanjong Pagar Railway Station Singapore
Tanjong Pagar railway station (Chinese: 丹戎巴葛火车总站; Malay: Stesen Keretapi Tanjong Pagar), also called Keppel Road railway station or Singapore railway station, is a railway terminus owned by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), the main railway operator in Malaysia. The land on which the station and the KTM railway tracks in Singapore are situated is held by KTM on a 999-year lease.
Following an agreement between the governments of Malaysia and Singapore which was reached on 24 May 2010, railway operations into and from the station will permanently cease from 1 July 2011 onwards. After the cessation, the building will be conserved and may be integrated with future developments on the site. KTM's southern terminus would be relocated to the Woodlands Train Checkpoint.
Singapore will have less than 1 kilometre of main railway line left in operation in the entire country, running from Woodlands to Johor Bahru across the Straits of Johor.
History
Before the Johor-Singapore Causeway was built, the railway in Singapore was exclusively limited to the island. The construction of the Johor-Singapore Causeway across the Straits of Johor began in 1919, and it was opened to goods trains on September 17, 1923 and to passenger trains on October 1, 1923. Previously, passengers and goods train were transferred at Woodlands to a ferry to Johor Bahru and the connecting train on the peninsula. Tanjong Pagar railway station was completed in 1932.

Tanjong Pagar railway station (Malay: Stesen Keretapi Tanjong Pagar; Chinese: 丹戎巴葛火车总站; Tamil: தஞ்சோங் பகார் ரயில் நிலையம்), also called Singapore railway station (Malay: Stesen Keretapi Singapura; Chinese: 新加坡火车站; Tamil: சிங்கப்பூர் ரயில் நிலையம்) or Keppel Road railway station, is a former railway station located at 30 Keppel Road in Singapore. The station was the southern terminus of the network operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), the main railway operator in Malaysia, until 30 June 2011 when the station ceased operations with relocation of the KTM station to Woodlands Train Checkpoint. The land on which the station and the KTM railway tracks stood was originally owned by KTM and over which Malaysia had partial sovereignty.[1] This arrangement lasted until 30 June 2011, when rail service to Tanjong Pagar was ended and the land reverted to Singapore.

[KTM] Sayonara Tanjong Pagar (Youtube Version)
A chapter of Singapore's and Malaysia's History is now closed. The railway land between Tanjong Pagar and Woodlands have been given to Singapore. For many years, from the Tank Road Station days of 1910 to the current Tanjong Pagar Railway Station in 1932, trains have plied down this section that is a symbol of Malaysia and Singapore's bilateral ties.
These ties are clearly represented by the railway. Two rails, two countries united by a concrete sleeper, signifying unity and trust. As a train enthusiast myself, it is sad to see Tanjong Pagar go into the pages of history as it had lost it's purpose. Now, it just stands as a work of art; something that has no purpose other than itself.
I have spent a good time of my secondary school days spotting trains at this station. I loved the rumbling of the rails and the smoking clags coming out of the train's exhaust pipe as it makes it's way down the rails. I will miss them. Eventhough the trains still exist between Woodlands and JB, it's no point.
Sayonara Tanjong Pagar and thank you KTMB Malaysia for your presence. Even though we might rumble about trains being late, we still love seeing trains.

Inside the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station
Tanjong Pagar railway station (Chinese: 丹戎巴葛火车总站; Malay: Stesen Keretapi Tanjong Pagar), also called Keppel Road railway station or Singapore railway station, was until 30 June 2011 the southern terminus of the network operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), the main railway operator in Malaysia. The land on which the station and the KTM railway tracks are situated was held by KTM on a 999-year lease. The station closed on 30 June 2011 and the Woodlands Train Checkpoint took over as terminus for KTM's Singapore services from 1 July 2011.
The main building of the railway station was gazetted as a national monument on 9 April 2011, completing one of the objectives of the new Points of Agreement between Malaysia and Singapore.
The building is in a richly ornamented Art Deco style. On its exterior are four reliefs of white marble, allegories of Agriculture, Industry, Commerce and Transport. They are works by Rudolfo Nolli. The hall has a barrel vault roof. Inside the main public hall, the walls bear panels with Malayan scenes: rice planting, rubber tapping, shipping activities, bullock cart transport, copra growing and tin mining. These panels and the original floor slabs were manufactured locally, using rubber to deaden noise.
The two long platforms were capable of accommodating the longest mail trains, covered by umbrella reinforced concrete roofs

Singapore Attractions: Tanjong Pagar Railway Station (Before the trains stop coming)
The Tanjong Pagar Railway Station has been a part of Singapore even before Singapore became an independent nation. It is one of the ways we are linked to Malaysia and vise versa. The land used to belong to Malaysia and it sits in the heart of Singapore's busiest business district, the CBD.
Recently Singapore and Malaysia had a landmark deal to swap land belonging to Keretapi Tanah Melayu with another, thus freeing up land to be used for business and commercial purposes.
Sadly, this historic site will make way for progress and soon the trains will stop coming here. Thus, before this happens I wish to capture a part of history before it all disappears.
I came here this morning with a couple of friends to enjoy some delicious breakfast served by one of the many foodstall located inside the railway itself. It has a cult following of it's own, a diffrent vibe from the rest of the island. You feel you are no longer in Singapore, somewhere else.
I was lucky enough to capture some of the scenes here, just another oasis in modern Singapore soon to be gone, but hopefully through this video, not to be forgotten by generations to come.

Singapore: Understanding Tanjong Pagar
We are a group of architectural students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic and our current project require us to study and gain a better understanding of our site in Chinatown subdistrict 4 - Tanjong Pagar.
Due to urbanization, there have been tall commercialized buildings built lately and we felt that it affected Tanjong Pagar culture and heritage.
Hence, my team and I head down to Tanjong Pagar to share about some of the landmarks and activities that happen on here. We also interviewed workers, tourist and people on the streets to gain their understanding on Tanjong Pagar and how they felt about the changes that have happened here over these couple of years.

Christmas spirit at the closing Tanjong Pagar Railway Station Singapore!
Nostalgia for the masses, took my first video aboard a train disembarking from this exact station when I was 12.
Lots of flea market stores opened by mostly business savvy young adults, and a Christmas gig on the far side of the terminus center. Going there is like walking into a time machine, the classical design of the station architecture is rather intricate and I like it. 11/10 would go there when it opens after refurbishment.
