the Big Print 2018
A mega community event culminated in a day of inking and printing at the Tanks Arts Centre, Cairns, on Tanks Market Day, 29 July. InkMasters artists conducted workshops in primary and secondary schools, and in Indigenous arts centres - Girringun, Yarrabah, and Wujal Wujal. The lino blocks were printed all at once in a 20 metre long line, with a big team of volunteer printmakers, friends and the audience. Printdancing produced the 2018 BIG PRINT with great music and a lot of fun! The BIG PRINT shows at Cell Art Space Gallery, 1-19 August, 109 Lake St and then travels to the schools and communities that created the blocks.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. An insightful talk uncovering some of the myths of the world of lobbying. We are challenged to question whether 'perception is reality' and how and what makes governments act. The talk takes us back 400 years to the first formal use of lobbyists, and pushes us to face the complexity of the 'noise' in today's society. In looking at the work of lobbyists to create, and also go beyond, perceptions, what lessons can we take away for our various professions and our lives in using perception as a helpful and constructive tool?
Maria Laptev is a lobbyist, teacher and trainer, and a leader in her field of Public Affairs. She is a recognised expert among professional lobbyists in Brussels and other European capitals. Few people have the depth of experience which Maria has cultivated in her over thirty years working for some of the largest global public affairs agencies on international campaigns with corporations, non governmental organisations and business associations as well as on single issue topics covering many sectors.
She is a professor at United Business Institutes in Brussels where her students commonly remark on her passion, candour and thoughtfulness in her teaching. She has also taught in Vietnam, Croatia and Serbia and various countries in Western Europe.
She is Executive Director to the European Centre for Public Affairs (the ECPA), a Brussels based think tank/platform for Public Affairs affairs excellence and best practice with a focus on training and skills development.

Shipping Container Home Designed For Sustainable Family Living
In this weeks episode, we explore this lovely family home which has been constructed using shipping containers. Named the South Coast Container House, this home has been sustainably constructed using four shipping containers and has also been extended to enclose communal spaces. At 95 square meters (1000 square feet) this home is capable of sleeping 10 people and has been divided into a main 85 square meter home, with an additional 15 square meter sleep-out made from a single 20ft shipping container.

SIG AK-53: A Truly Weird Forward-Operating Rifle

One of the most mechanically unusual rifles I have had the chance to examine is the SIG AK-53. One of a long line of interested experimental self-loading designs made by SIG between the 1920s and 1950s, the AK53 is a gas operated rifle with a fixed breechblock and a barrel that cycles forward when fired. The gas system compresses a spring rearward first, which then releases and pushes the barrel forward in a system with a few elements in common with the British Farquhar-Hill rifles and machine guns. The magazine is also unique in design to allow rounds to move directly upward so as to have the barrel drop over them in a reverse sort of feeding (the magazine bears some vague similarity to the Madsen and Mendoza LMG magazines in this way...a bit). For reasons which will become very clear upon disassembly (if not already made clear by that description), only prototypes of the rifle were ever made, with no series production.
