Château de Tanlay - We visit the Renaissance-style Château de Tanlay
- Visit to Château de Tanlay - We visit the 16th century Renaissance-style Château de Tanlay, nestling serenely within this picturesque village. For more information on the cruise itinerary please see:
We visit the 16th century Renaissance-style Château de Tanlay, nestling serenely within this picturesque village. Also time to wander around Tanlay before returning to the barge for Captain's Farewell Dinner aboard.
Surrounded by rolling hills where white Charolais cattle graze and where mistletoe hangs from poplars, Tanlay seems right out of a picture book. The château at Tanlay, one of the finest in Burgundy, was built in the 15th and 16th centuries and has a beautifully-decorated interior.
Ensconced in a series of moats, arcades and iron grills, the château is actually a petit château and a grand château, all surrounded by a park. Washhouses (les lavoirs) were built in 1821 in the castle moat. The château was once the meeting location for area Protestants.

Inside the 18th c. Château of Villarceaux
This place has always been referred to kind of as The 18th Century Château, even back then. It's part of the Domaine de Villarceaux, which is enormous AND covers a good 900 years of history. The view before this building, which was primarily a hunting lodge, has remained virgin for centuries, and France is keeping it that way. As far as the eye can see, there isn't a pole or a wire, nor a house, castle, highway or anything but nature. Lots of wildlife, and this entire domain is an eco-project, managed without pesticides or high-tech methods. The adjacent farm is profitable, and the restoration of this huge area was completed around 2010. There is no charge to visit, but dogs are no longer allowed -- there were too many problems. Winters out here are harsh, so it's also closed during the coldest months. The rest of the year, it's open and the guided tours use paid humans -- it takes a couple of hours and is strenuous, so be prepared.
This is at the far reaches of Greater Paris and is still, technically, in the Val d'Oise département. One of the reasons this is working so well is that the public is not just allowed in here to roam at their will. Hours are respected and groups go together -- there are huge amounts of water here, and the place is kept more lovely by not having to put up guardrails and crowd control aspects. Considering that there is absolutely nothing charged for the basic visit and that it's already profitable enough to house a social program for local people, artists in residence, music, gastronomy and exotic things, this is all quite something. The focus is on the heritage of the region.
The domaine goes back to the Middle Ages and you get a lesson in the history of human inhabitation here. One of the owners, Charles Jean-Baptiste du Tillet, Marquis de La Bussière, took the remains of the feudal château and had this maison de plaisance constructed IN LESS THAN FIVE YEARS. He introduced the concept of paying all his employees for life, thus creating the concept of retirement pensions, which contributed to him being allowed use of his property during the first French revolution in the 18th c., profits from its production, and, of course, he was permitted to live. There's a lot to know about this place, so have a look at iledefrance.fr.
The dining room here shows two buffets as fixtures in the room -- the buffet was finally going out of style. Before that, people were not served at table in France, but rather got up to help themselves. The table is amusing because it's wood, but painted to look like marble, and was easier to move around and extend for different occasions -- it could be small or large. The sedan chair in the vestibule was for good weather in Paris on the narrow, muddy streets -- paintings by Boucher adorn its exterior. It was carried by four porters and is a mobile work of art, perfectly preserved. Much of France was destroyed during the Revolution, but this place is incredibly intact.

This Photographer Spent 2 Years Taking Breathtaking Drone Pictures That Would Be Illegal Today
Previously, bird’s-eye view photography was only available through expensive plane rides and balloon stunts. Quadcopters and drones changed the equation, and Amos Chapple spent two years travelling the world and taking photos with his remote-control friend. Below you can see 21 of his best pictures of both iconic landmarks and unexpected places of beauty. It seems that exchanging a camera stand for a quad-copter has its merits, as far as landmark photography is concerned.
Amos himself seems to be worried that the public opinion and even law is turning against use of quadros, and that the art is in danger of being choked by privacy laws.
Looking at these pictures, it’s not hard to see that it would be a horrible trade-off.
