Tanneries, Marrakech – Quick Tour
Sensible people will avoid the stinking tanneries in the medina of Marrakech. Animal urine and excrement are used here in a tanning process unchanged since the founding of Marrakech in 1062. Despite bunches of mint that were handed to us on our arrival we were overwhelmed by the stench. This was in December (2015).
The tanneries in Marrakech are at the centre of a scam, well documented by Maroc Mama in her article How to Avoid the Tannery Scam in Morocco:

We Get Scammed - Marrakech Tannery Vlog
First time in Marrakech, we thought it would be a good idea to see some sights... Getting lost, a local recommended the tanneries. Whilst this was a good idea, it was also a bad one and we should have waited for Fes.
Everything goes fine with this, until off camera in the shops afterwards. We get it, it was business and we were stupid enough to follow a non-official guide... Only ourselves to blame.
Moral of the story:
1. In Morocco, GET AN OFFICIAL GUIDE
2. Say no to locals if they offer something
3. I get it, it is your local culture and it's your way of selling.
Marrakech Safety: The Tannery Scam!
Fist things first.... is Marrakech a safe city? Absolutely! I've been there many times and would recommend it to anyone traveling to northern Africa. Will locals try to scam you if you give them the chance? No doubt, but... I think it's safe to say they would do that in most cities around the world. I've been scammed in taxis in Spain, markets in Morocco, I've even been scammed over the phone in Colorado. This video wasn't created to scare you out of traveling to Marrakech (or Spain or Colorado), it was designed to help you stay safe by avoiding one of the oldest and easiest Marrakech scams in the book.... the tannery scam.
Here's how it works. You visit Marrakech with your family. You probably don't look like the locals and you're in the Marrakech medina. You're an easy target. A young kid approaches you in very friendly tone. The kid will ask you some questions to get an idea of what you're doing in the city. Usually it ends by him helping you out. This street is closed, I'll show you a shortcut, or let me show you the tannery, it's free of charge. Well, we'd been in Marrakech too long to know that nothing is free.
Let me also mention that the tannery has been around for thousands of years. It's the manufacturing station for making all their leather products. The young kid will walk you to his friend of family member in the tannery who will then give you a tour. The tour was only 5 bucks but the smell was priceless. Let me warn you, the smell is worst than the scam, it is horrific, but hey... how many times do you get to say you've been to the tannery in Marrakech? The tour guide will give you a piece of mint to put up your nose.
Once the tour is over he walks you over to his buddies who work in the actual shop. This is where they get you. You know how you wait forever in a roller coaster line, then you experience the ride, and the overpriced gift shop is waiting for you as you exit? Same concept here. They put all the overpriced items at the end of the tannery experience hoping that you'll pay the ridiculous price because you experienced the whole ride.
Once you've spent an outrageous price, guess who's waiting for you outside? Yep, you guessed it, that same kid. He's there to show you you're way back to the Marrakech medina and this time it's not for free.
Here's my point: Visit Marrakech, experience it all, but stay safe and don't get scammed with expensive merchandise that you can buy for half the price in the market.

MARRAKECH STREET FOOD, SOUKS, KITTENS AND TANNERIES | Morocco Travel Vlog
The first day in Marrakech was full of street foods, Moroccan cats, and visiting the markets and tanneries. We ran around all day eating chicken shawarma and falafel sandwiches, exploring the souks (local markets) and eating there, visiting the tanneries (leather markets), and finding cute cats EVERYWHERE, despite having lost our luggage with Royal Air Maroc.

Marrakech is dangerous!? Tanneries in Medina
This is my first visit in Marrakech and it's also my first time to film a little bit in my trip.
I can't say it's dangerous just because two guys took my phone. Because most of the time I feel safe here and I met a lot of nice people as well. Everywhere in this world could be dangerous if youd never be alert.
But you really need to watch out of the people especially if you are doing the solo backpacking trips like me.
P.S. My laptop have some problems to connect with camera so maybe it doesn't looks so good. There are so many limitations when you do everything by phone.

Tannery industry in Marrakech. Skin of Goat, caw, sheep and camel came from all of Morocco. This factory since 1000years ago. Really traditional work.
This is a film of the one couple who is traveling around the world. We are going central america at first, then going to south america, Europa,Africa, and Asia.

Morocco Trip | Fez Tanneries | How Bad Is The Smell?
For every like, comment and subscribe, we'll adopt a stray cat. This video is about our Morocco trip. A couple of months ago we flew to Marrakech, took a train through the desert to Fez, and went to see the famous tanneries, where artisans make leather from hides. The process involves mixtures of bird droppings and cow urine, and of course a tonne of fresh animal hides. We were told before going that the smell is unbearable and has the occasional unwary tourist faint. But how bad does it really smell?

Tannery Tour in Fez, Morocco | Top Attractions Travel Fez
Tannery Tour in Fez, Morocco | Top Attractions Travel Fez
Morocco is known for their leather exports.
So when in a medieval city like Old Fez, a popular tourist attraction is often to take a tannery tour. What are tanneries? A seven century age-old way of making leather products from belts to bags, cushions, etc...through the skinning, shearing, drying and dyeing of animal skins with the help of laborious manpower and big vats of all-natural dyes.
Now guide books will be-cry the relationship between the tanneries and its smell as a forewarning, such that a post-911 New York resident and vegetarian like myself, immediately began drawing notions of the deathly odor as being from rotting carcasses. I admit, I was a bit reluctant to tourist this territory. Nevertheless, my curiosity is stronger than fear or stench, and pinching my nostrils and breathing through the side of my mouth held work-around solutions for opening this bejeweled Fez-ian Pandora's prize.
Well, honestly,... the smell was nowhere near the scariness I had imagined.
Pigeons...
