大分市の南北を流れ、別府湾に注ぐ長さ５５km、流域面積６５０平方ｋｍの一級河川。広大な川は、近隣高校生などのカヌーの練習場所になっています。中心部から近く、河川敷ではウオーキングなどで汗を流す人々の姿が。春には、下流付近の約２５０ｍの美しい桜並木が訪れた人を楽しませてくれるなど、市民の憩いの場として親しまれています。
