Cebu Taoist Temple (Cebu City, Philippines)
I caught a taxi up the mountain to the Cebu Taoist Temple, which is a peaceful escape from the chaotic mess of Cebu City. There are some nice views out over the city.

The Cebu Taoist Temple was built in 1972 by the Cebu’s substantial Chinese community. This temple is composed of two different temples: one is the Phu Sian Temple, built by another Chinese community, which is not open to the public; another is the main temple which is 270 meters above sea level.
The latter is the only temple open to worshippers and non-worshippers. Entrance to the temple is a replica of the Great Wall of China. The temple includes a chapel, library, souvenir shop, and a wishing well. It also has a spacious balcony that has an access to the scenic of the city.
he Taoist Temple is the center of worship for Taoism, the religion which follows the teachings of the ancient Chinese philosopher, Lao Zi. In the temple, devotees perform rituals. One ritual is where one prays to the gods to grant one’s wish. This kind of ritual includes washing hands, going inside the chapel barefoot and dropping two blocks of wood. If the blocks of wood are both face up upon reaching the floor, it means one can make a wish. If not, it means it is not yet time for one’s wish to be granted and needs to come back again to the temple some other time.
Another ritual among the devotees is the climbing of its 181 steps, which represents the 81 chapters of Taoism scriptures, and lighting joss sticks and having their fortune be read by the monks. This kind of ritual is done during Wednesdays and Sundays.
he Cebu Taoist Temple is located in a private subdivision, the Beverly Hills Subdivision, in Lahug, Cebu City. It can only be reached through a private car, taxi, or a motorcycle for hire called the “habal-habal”. But motorcycles for hire are allowed only until the gate of the subdivision and one needs to walk from the gate to the temple which will take for more or less 15 minutes. If you are in the mood for some hiking or exercise, you can just walk from where the jeepney dropped you, in sudlon, and hike or walk till you reached the temple. It will take you more than 30 minutes to reach the temple but it will be a good walk still because you will be passing through tree-lined streets, a perfect way to commune with nature.

Cebu Taoist Temple
Let’s start within the city area. First off, we have Cebu Taoist Temple in Beverly Hills Subdivision, Cebu City. The Chinese Taoism community built this Chinese style architecture temple in 1972.
This temple had become popular because of its artistic structures. Even non-believers of the Taoism religion pay visit to the place. From there, you can see the striking view of the city and even the Mactan Island. And of course, for Taoists, this is the ideal place to pray or meditate.
2. Temple of Leah
The next attraction is the Temple of Leah which is along Cebu Transcentral highway. Teodorico Soriano Adarna built this temple in 2012.
The temple is a symbol of his undying love for his wife of 53 years, Leah Villa Albino-Adarna. The temple has 24 chambers including a museum, an art gallery and a library.
In addition, Greek and Roman architectures are the inspiration of the temple. Statues of gigantic lions as well as a grand staircase with brass angels are decors of this Taj Mahal of Cebu.
3. Sirao Flower Garden
Heading to the more elevated spot is in the Busay area which is the Sirao Flower Garden.Going there is like experiencing the Netherlands, thus this tourist spot is commonly called, “The Little Amsterdam”. The array of celosia (or ‘Burlas’ by locals) flowers in flaring red, purple, yellow, orange makes it Amsterdam-ish.The put-up windmill and the cool wind complement the scenic view. Hence, this gives the guests the unique, touristy feel.
4. 10,000 Roses of Cebu
Moving to the nearby island of Mactan, you can visit the 10,000 Roses of Cebu. This magnificent spot, which is in Day-as Barangay Rd, Cordova, Cebu, has gone viral on social media.10,000 artificial LED-powered roses surround this certain Roses Café & More. Most guests prefer to go there during dusk to see the beautiful sunset while the roses lit up at night. Moreover, the owner of the café, who is also an interior designer, intends to create a romantic ambiance for couples.
5. Osmeña Peak
Going south, you could climb the Osmeña Peak of Cebu in Mantalongon, Dalaguete (pronounced “Dalaget”).Standing at 1,013 meters above sea level, Osmeña Peak is the highest point in the entire island. Lime stones that have sharp protruding peaks which are perfect for taking pictures make up these hills. The peak is part of the Mantalongon mountain range that stretches as far as the municipality of Badian. It is considered a twin to Bohol’s Chocolate Hills.Further, the main activities here are hiking and camping. Most hikers prefer two hiking trails. The first one begins in Badian, passing by Kawasan Falls. On the other hand, the other one is in the town of Dumanjug, which culminates in Brgy Liong.
6. Kawasan Falls
Still in the south of Cebu is the breathtaking Kawasan Falls in Badian municipality. Some hikers from Osmena Peak traverse to Kawasan Falls after camping, but you can just go directly to Kawasan via Barili. Kawasan Falls is a three-stage cascade of clear turquoise water from mountain springs of Mantalongon mountain range. The waterfalls is a pearl of the Philippines. One of the most popular Cebu tourist spots or activities is Kawasan Canyoneering. The canyoneering adventure starts at Canlaob river downstream going to Kawasan falls. Local accredited guides accompany all tourists and facilitate the activities such as walking, jumping, swimming, climbing and abseiling through the streams.
7. Pescador Island
Pescador Island is in Tañon Strait – few kilometers off the coast of Moalboal in the south of Cebu Island. It is one of the best diving spots in Cebu. Its island reef is a sandy slope covered with soft coral from 5–10 meters (15–35 ft).Further, there is a wall covered with hard corals dropping down to about 40 meters (130 ft). In that wall are tons of different species of colorful sea creatures, including sharks .
Oslob Whale Sharks
On the other side of the island is where you can experience swimming with the Oslob Whale Sharks, locally known as the “Tuki”.Oslob Municipality is known for old churches and beautiful beaches but became more popular because of the gentle giants – the Whale Sharks.Local fishermen would interact with the whale sharks by feeding them…until large number of tourists began to arrive in Oslob to see the whale sharks being fed.
Tumalog Falls
Few kilometers away from the whale shark attraction is the Tumalog Falls. It is also situated in the municipality of Oslob. Locals call this body of water, the “Toslob Falls” or “Mag-ambak Falls”.Tumalog Falls is a curtain like waterfalls that covers the entire cliff with cool and clear water. Moss embraces the rocks of the cliff which filters the water and gives a curtain effect.

Cebu Tourist Taoist Temple
Where to go in the Philippines. What to do in the Philippines. A short video about what is possibly the most popular tourist attraction on the island of Cebu in the Philippines, the Taoist Temple.
The temple comprises of a number of colourful structures, depending on their usage, built in the traditional Chinese style
Some say it is not as impressive as the ones in Thailand for instance but if this is your first experience of a Taoist Temple I would suggest it is not something to be missed.
Built in 1972 by the substantial Chinese community it is the centre of worship for the followers of Lao Zi or Lao Tzu and Taoism.
Fortune telling plays a big part in Taoism and apart from the ritual described in the video another ritual is to climb the 81 steps, which represent the 81 chapters of Taoism scriptures, to light joss sticks and have your fortune read by the monks. This ritual is only available on certain days of the week and it is best to enquire beforehand which days they are.
Some claim there are 99 steps to the entrance but perhaps it depends on which route you take, there are, I believe, three different routes. The route I took had no steps at all. Elderly and infirm people, like me, with walking difficulties are allowed to use the higher entrance which is on flat ground. I presume this entrance is restricted due to the lack of parking facilities at that point. The temple is in a secure residential area.
This is a working Taoist Temple where monks go about their daily prayers and religious duties. As such there are restrictions on taking photos in some areas and other areas require a certain dress code before entry will be permitted, please also observe the notices.
