Taoyuan Valley Hiking Trail (桃园谷远足径) | The Sleeping Dog | The Batanes of Taiwan ????????
Taoyuan Valley Hiking Trail (桃源谷)
(The Sleeping Dog) (The Batanes of Taiwan ????????)
Taoyuan Valley in northern Taiwan has a very large dog sleeping on its beautiful grassland.
This time we returned to the northernmost part of Yilan County, to be exact, the coastal mountains between the villages of Dali (大里) and Daxi (大溪), to visit Taoyuan Valley (桃源谷), a grassy highland area with gorgeous views.
If you start at either Dali or Daxi the whole walk to the other village/railway station takes about seven hours depending on your pace. You’ll have to conquer some steep section with a lot of stone steps but you will be rewarded by probably the best coastal views in northern Taiwan. From high up you can take in the ocean and the coastline below. Make sure to get an early start and only attempt the whole walk if you are in good shape.
After about two thirds of the way (when starting from Dali) you’ll come to what is called Taoyuan Valley. Grazing water buffaloes are responsible for the short cut grass here, similar to the Qingtiangang (擎天崗)area of Yangmingshan National Park (陽明山國家公園) in the north of Taipei City. While this “valley” is quite a distance from Dali and Daxi, it is surprisingly well visited on weekends, thanks to a small access road and a small car park, the road connecting to the town of Gongliao (貢寮), west of Fulong.
We took the train to Daxi Railway Station and started from there. Instead of choosing the more popular route via Mt. Fanshuliao (蕃薯寮山; 456m) we decided to get to Taoyuan Valley on the Stone Guanyin Trail (石觀音線步道), which starts near the coastal highway, about halfway between Dali and Daxi. The trail is named for a temple dedicated to Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, which you will pass on your way up.
To get to the trail head, turn left after exiting Daxi Railway Station. Walk about 25 minutes north along the highway. You will see Guishan Island (Turtle Island) to your right. The river you’ll pass (take the smaller road parallel to the highway to avoid dangerous encounters with gravel trucks on the shoulder-less highway bridge) is presumably the reason for the village’s name, which translates as “Big River”.
At the far end of the valley is a pavilion where you can take a rest and take in the scenery. The area is marvelous. On weekdays you might have the whole place all to yourself, safe for your bovine companions.
Final recommendations. If you are up to the task, do the whole trail from Daxi to Dali or vice versa. I wouldn’t combine it with the Caoling Historic Trail from Fulong. That trail is only interesting once you come to Yakou, which you will pass on your way from Dali or Daxi anyway. Like mentioned before, pick a day when the weather is perfect. You don’t want to walk all the way up only to find out that everything is covered in mist. During the summer, bring plenty of water and sun protection. There is no shadow once you are up there.
The trail stretches approximately 5 kilometers and passes the peak of Mt. Fanshuliao at 456 meters above sea level. It is tougher than all the other trails because it is the steepest. Hikers get occasional breaks as the trail levels off or drops down briefly, then rises again.
However, the hardship is more than revarded as the trail passes through natural forests where hikers can enjoy cooling shade as they savor the expansive and relaxing views of the Pacific Ocean at nearly every turn of the trail. This is a perfect place enjoy an invigorating green shower and a mildly challenging mountain walk.
Slopes flat len near the top of the ridge, where the Taoyuan Valley is located. Taoyuan Valley consists of a wide swath of grass covered slope land that streches about three kilometers and offers 360-degree views that include Turtle Island and the layered peaks of the Toucheng and Gongliao areas. The expansive vistas of Taoyuan Valley uplift the spirits of all who enter here.
How to get there?
There are 3 options to get there:
From Fulong Station, You can hire a Taxi going to the trail. Just show the photo and the name in a Chinese.
From Dali Station, Caoling Historic Trail. You can also start your trail here going to the peak..It takes 3 to 4 hrs of walking going to the peak then you can exit going Daxi Station (5 kilometers).
From Daxi Station, walk around 15 to 20 minutes until you reach the sign Taoyuan Valley Hiking Trail then follow until you reach the peak. It takes 3 to 5 hours of walking.

HIKING @ CAOLING 2008
Novermber 15, 2008
Some classmates and friends @ National Taiwan Normal University decided to hike in Yilan (Northern Taiwan) an hour from Taipei by local train. The place is called Caoling (草嶺) Trail is 8.5 km in length. It lies beetween Gonglia, Taipei County and Toucheng, Yilan County. The trail was an important pathway between Taipei and Yilan (宜蘭), and it has existed for more than two centuries.
Every year of late November, they have a celebration called Silver Grass Festival. The silver grass is in full bloom, and the hilly areas are covered with sleek, satiny grass.Attracting lots of tourist to take a hike in a trail.
I'm glad we experienced it this year. After 6 hours of hiking, whew, it was tiring but fulfilling!

Backup plan emerges to improve rail transit between Taipei and Yilan
A backup plan to reduce rail transit time between Taipei and Yilan emerged today. But the bureau responsible for construction says this backup would only be used if a more ambitious plan for a direct line fails to pass environmental review. Even the fastest Puyuma express train takes more than an hour to travel between Taipei and Yilan. The Railway Reconstruction Bureau has therefore proposed a new, faster line between the localities. If that plan doesn’t pass, improvements could be made to the current route.Shih Wen-hsiongRailway Reconstruction BureauNothing that we’ve done is finalized. It hasn’t formally received approval from the Cabinet. It must pass review. The bureau calls the improvement plan the worst possible solution, only to be used if plans for the new line fail to pass environmental impact assessment. That new linewould go around the Feitsui Reservoir, traveling from Nangang to Shuangxi then Toucheng. Environmental groups are most concerned about the section between Xizhi and Shuangxi. It would require a 21.6-kilometer-long tunnel through the Hsuehshan Range.Ko Wen-jeTaipei MayorThe Taipei-Yilan direct rail line is a technical problem that requires a technical solution. Analysis must be done of the environmental impact of different routes. I hope that these technical problems and solutions are given numerical answers. The direct line would reduce travel time by over 30 minutes. The backup improvement plan would save fewer than 10 minutes.
Taipei MRT system begins track replacement work after 19 years of operation
After opening 19 years ago, the Taipei MRT is now undergoing its first track replacement project. Follow our report as we take a closer look at the people responsible for this difficult work which is carried out each evening. It’s midnight and this group of repairmen working for the Taipei MRT is just going to work, undertaking important maintenance operations to ensure safety.Fang Chen-weiTrack ManufacturerEach wheel applies pressure equal to 16 tons every day. If the (track) is deformed then one day it will break and a train will derail.Every day two million people travel on the Taipei MRT. This leaves little room for error, as rail wear more than 16 mm means the whole section of track needs to be replaced. At night, these workers saw through the track. A typical 140-meter rail section can weigh 8.4 tons. This requires a machine to precisely lower the track section into place. It is linked with special welds heated to 900 degrees Celsius.Work on the track takes place between 1:30 and 4:30 in the morning so as not to affect the first train at 6 am.Lu Jya-hsingTrack ManufacturerWorking at night for many years is difficult because you don’t have much time to be with your family. For this reason, we ask families to please be understanding. This work can only be done in the evening. The dedication of this group of individuals is allowing all of Taipei’s residents the opportunity to enjoy convenient and safe passage on the MRT system.

Taoyuan Valley (桃源谷), located at the border of Gong Liao Hsiao (貢寮鄉 Township) of Taipei County and Toucheng Town (頭城鎮) of Ilan County, is a 3-km long grass hill. Its landscape is quite like the Cingtiangang grassland of the Yangmingshan National Park, but the view is much more beautiful than the one at Cingtiangang. A small offshore island named Turtle Island is just in sight when the weather is clear.
The valley was named Cowboy Mountain because cowboys raised their cows in this grass valley during the farming off-season in the old times. Now visitors are still able to see some cows eating grass in the valley.
Since the valley is administered by the Northeast National Scenic Area Administration (東北角風景區管理處), a 4.5-km well-constructed stone trail was built several years ago, linking the Caoling Historical Trail (草嶺古道) in the north and a 5-km stone trail to Tasi (大溪) in the south. In total, the stone trail is about 10 km long.

Meihua (Plum Blossom) Lake (梅花湖風景區), Yilan, Taiwan, 05/28/2011
Meihua Lake, located in De-an Village of Dongshan Township, was originally named Dapi (Great Lake). In the 1970s, President Chiang Ching Kuo visited the area, including the lake, and was impressed by its beautiful surroundings including the lake's resemblance to a plum flower with five pedals. Hence he named it Meihua (plum blossom) Lake.
Meihua Lake occupies a wide expanse of land and is bordered by verdant mountains on 3 sides, featuring outstanding scenery. The total lake surface is about 20 hectares. Circling the lake is a trail allowing visitors to stroll tranquilly around while enjoying the picturesque scenery. Cherry and willow trees are planted along the trail, adding more charm to the lake. A small island sits in the middle of the lake with a suspension bridge connecting it to the circular trail, providing an exquisite view.
