Magical Peru #17: Lago Titicaca's Isla Taquile
Magical Peru:
We woke up very early in Puno to go on a boat trip on lake Titicaca! Please watch the morning part of this trip when stopped by the floating islands of the Uros People:
On the afternoon, we continued our boat tour heading to Isla Taquile, the most industrious island in Lake Titicaca. Its walled paths are crowned with rustic arches and dotted with Inca and pre-Inca ruins. Some 350 Quechua-speaking families still live in Taquile island following Inca creeds.
Taquileños are known for their fine handwoven textiles and clothing, which are regarded as among the highest-quality handicrafts in Peru. Knitting is exclusively performed by males, starting at age eight. The women exclusively make yarn and weave. Taquileans are also known for having created an innovative, community-controlled tourism model, offering home stays, transportation, lodging for groups, cultural activities, local guides and restaurants. The economy is based on fishing, terraced farming horticulture based on potato cultivation, and tourist-generated income from the approximately 40,000 tourists who visit each year.
The Uros are a pre-Incan people who live on forty-two self-fashioned floating islands in Lake Titicaca Puno, Peru and Bolivia. The Uros use bundles of dried totora reeds to make reed boats (balsas mats), and to make the islands themselves.The Uros islands at 3810 meters above sea level are just five kilometers west from Puno port.
Puno is in southeastern Peru, located on the shore of Lake Titicaca. It is the capital city of the Puno Region and the Puno Province with a population of approximately 100,000. The city was established in 1668 by viceroy Pedro Antonio Fernández de Castro as capital of the province of Paucarcolla with the name San Juan Bautista de Puno. Puno has several churches dating back from the colonial period; they were built to service the Spanish population and evangelize the natives. Lake Titicaca (Spanish: Lago Titicaca) is a lake in the Andes on the border of Peru and Bolivia. By volume of water, it is the largest lake in South America. It is often called the highest navigable lake in the world, with a surface elevation of 3,812 m (12,507 ft).
When we first arrived in Peru, we spent a couple of weeks studying Spanish in Lima (please watch the vlog Living in Lima) then we headed to the North of Peru and visited Trujillo, Chiclayo and some archaeological sites, such as tombs, pyramids and ancient cities. On the South of Peru, our first stop was in Arequipa, and then we headed to Chivay and its thermal pools (La Calera hot springs) and the Colca Canyon, to do a canyon tour. Now, we go to the country side: Puno, Lake Titicaca, Cusco, Machu Pichu and so on...

Lake Titicaca Travel Guide (Uros, Amantaní and Taquile Islands)
To close off our trip to Peru we headed from Cuzco to Puno with the intention of covering Lake Titicaca (Lago Titicaca) as best we could over the duration of two days. Our trip started from Puno early in the morning when we boarded a boat bound for the Uros Island. The Uros people, who lives on floating reed islands, welcomed us to their floating islands where we had a chance to tour around and purchase some souvenirs.

Afterwards, we took a traditional rowing boat made out of reeds to another island before heading off to Amantaní. Upon arriving our host family greeted us and we headed to our homestay where we had a traditional lunch consisting of Quinoa soup, potatoes, fried cheese and rice. Afterwards we hiked to the top of the Island (Pachamama) where we had incredible 360 degree views. It felt like we could almost touch the clouds. In the evening we dressed up in traditional attire (ponchos) and headed over for a dance party with live traditional music. The following morning we visited our final island (Taquile) before heading back to Puno. Overall, it was an incredible trip and one we recommend highly; however, be sure to do the two day trip and opposed to the one day option for a more relaxed time.

So we are taking a really fun overnight trip from Puno today to visit Lake Titicaca. Yeah, we're going to visit several islands and do a homestay overnight. Yeah, and we'll get to meet the different communities that live here because we have Aymara people and Quechua people. So we've just arrived at our first island. And this one is called Corazon de Lago which means the heart of the lake. And this is an Aymara community that lives on a floating reed island so let's go have a look around. Let's check it out.
So it is a bit of a strange sensation walking on the reed islands because it is not solid ground and your feet do sink in a little bit but not to the point where you feel like you're going to fall through and you know go in the water. But still kind of interesting.
Okay, so what have we learned so far on this floating reed island? So we've visiting the Uros floating reed islands and there is approximately 80 to 90 of them. And the people who originally came here were escaping hostile neighbors.
So this is quite a secluded environment for them.
We've made it to our third island of the day. This one is called Amantani and this island is actually home to Quechua people whereas the first two that we visited were home to the Aymara people.
So aside from meeting our host families, what I'm most excited for is food. Because it is already lunchtime. It's a little bit past our lunch time actually. And we forgot to pack snacks. Yep. So I'm starving. So before we settle in we're going to get some local food. Yeah, and apparently they are vegetarian on this island, so we're going to be having a Quinoa soup and then just like potatoes and roots and different vegetables. Cheese and stuff like that. Cheese, yes. So it should be good.
So are you doing okay? A little bit out of breathe? Yeah, a little bit out of breath. We're still feeling the altitude. Actually Lake Titicaca is higher than Cuzco if you can believe that.
Sopa de Quinoa. Ah, sopa de quinoa. Quinoa soup. Ah, que rico.
So we reached the top of Pachamama. How are the views? Oh, we sure did. The views are insane here. It is almost like you're touching the clouds. It is like you can reach up and touch them.
So we're all dressed up, we've had our dinner and now it is time to go to the party. And we are dressed up in traditional outfits. Party!
Alright, so it is a new day and we are visiting a new island. Yes, this is our last stop on Lake Titicaca. This is Taquile Island and we're just going to take a wander around and see what we find. Yes, maybe we'll find our guide and she can tell us a bit of the history of the place. Let's go find her.

Taquile (Spanish: Isla de Taquile; Quechua: Intika) is an island on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca 45 km offshore from the city of Puno. About 2,200 people live on the island, which is 5.5 by 1.6 kilometres (3.4 by 1.0 mile) in size (maximum measurements), with an area of 5.72 km2 (2.21 sq mi). The highest point of the island is 4,050 metres (13,287 feet) above sea level and the main village is at 3,950 metres (12,959 feet). The inhabitants, known as Taquileños, speak Puno Quechua.

Captured Planet visits Taquile Island on Lake Titicaca
The Taquile Island has been populated in pre-Incan times. In the middle of the lake Titicaca, at about 4 000 metres in altitude, lives a community whose textile art has been proclaimed Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
PERU Puno LAGO TITICACA LAKE Amantani Isla Taquile Island
The island is circular and about 9.28 km² in size. It has two mountain peaks, Pachatata (father earth) and Pachamama (mother earth), with ancient Inca and Tiwanaku ruins on top of both. The hillsides, are terraced mostly worked by hand and planted with wheat, quinoa, potatoes, and other vegetables. Livestock, including alpacas, also graze the slopes.
The temples at the top of the peaks are generally closed during the year. Entrance is permitted on January 20, the annual feast day, at which time the island's population divides in two, with each group gathering at its respective temple. A race is then held from each peak to a point somewhere between the two, and a representative of each group is chosen to run. According to tradition, a victory for Pachamama portends a bountiful harvest in the year to come. Fuente: Wikipedia.org

In Andean belief, Titicaca is the birthplace of the sun. Set between Peru and Bolivia, it’s the largest lake in South America and the highest navigable body of water in the world. Bright days contrast with bitterly cold nights. Enthralling, deep-blue Lake Titicaca is the unifying, longtime home of highland cultures steeped in the old ways.
Pre-Inca Pukara, Tiwanaku and Collas all left their mark on the landscape. Today the region is a mix of crumbling cathedrals, desolate altiplano (Andean plateau) and checkerboard fields backed by rolling hills and high Andean peaks. In this world, crops are still planted and harvested by hand. Campesinos (farmers) wear sandals recycled from truck tires, women work in petticoats and bowler hats, and llamas are tame as pets.
It might at first appear austere, but ancient holidays are marked with riotous celebrations where elaborately costumed processions and brass bands start a frenzy that lasts for days.
Islas Uros
These human-made islands constructed from reeds are a fascinating half-day trip from Puno. Each islet is home to between one and ten Uros families, who fashion the buoyant totora reeds into huts, boats and even play equipment. Lying just 5km east of Puno, they are the most visited site of Lake Titicaca but still a highlight of the region.
The islands are constructed from many layers of the totora, which are constantly replenished from the top as they rot from the bottom, so the ground is always soft and springy. (Be careful not to put your foot through any rotten sections!)
Isla Taquile
Miniscule Taquile may be only 7-sq-km, with a population of merely 2000 people, but this island has a distinct culture famous for its colorful textiles. Beautiful landscapes of hills, stone archways and, of course, the blue lake, reveal themselves at every turn. You can pass through in a day or take your time and visit interesting sights with a host family, such as monuments to Pachamama (Mother Earth), which are especially fascinating during Taquile's wild festivals.
Puno:
With a regal plaza, concrete-block buildings and crumbling bricks that blend into the hills, Puno has its share of both grit and cheer. It serves as the jumping-off point for Lake Titicaca and is a convenient stop for those traveling between Cuzco and La Paz. But it may just capture your heart with its own rackety charm.
Puno is known as Peru’s capital folklórica (folkloric capital) – its Virgen de la Candelaria parades are televised across the nation – and the associated drinking is the stuff of legend. Its urban center can feel contaminated and cold. But Puno’s people are upbeat, cheeky and ready to drop everything if there’s a good time to be had.
As a commercial (and contraband) hub, its colonial and naval identity can be glimpsed in its spots of old architecture, the colorful traditional dress worn by many inhabitants and the scores of young cadets in the streets.

In 2005, Taquile and Its Textile Art were honored by being proclaimed Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Taquileños are known for their fine handwoven textiles and clothing, which are regarded as among the highest-quality handicrafts in Peru. Knitting is exclusively performed by males, beginning in early boyhood. Women spin wool and use vegetables and minerals to dye the wool to be used by the community. Women are also the weavers of the Chumpis, the wide belts with woven designs worn by everyone in the community of Taquile. Taquileans are also known for having created an innovative, community-controlled sustainable tourism model, offering home stays, transportation, lodging for groups, cultural activities, local guides and restaurants. Ever since tourism started coming to Taquile in the seventies, the Taquileans slowly lost control over the mass day-tourism operated by non-Taquileans. Taquile community have their own Travel Agency Munay Taquile has been established to regain local control over tourism.
Taquileños run their society based on community collectivism and on the Inca moral code ama sua, ama llulla, ama qhilla, (Quechua for do not steal, do not lie, do not be lazy). The island is divided into six sectors or suyus for crop rotation purposes. The economy is based on fishing, terraced farming horticulture based on potato cultivation, and tourist-generated income from the approximately 40,000 tourists who visit each year.
Taquile's families own rams, sheep, cows, chickens and sometimes guinea pigs. Taquile offers a wide range of typical dishes. Breakfast consists of two pancakes with sugar or bread with eggs, with a cup of tea made from either Muña or Coca. For lunch, dishes are a vegetable soup, fish with rice, and a tomato and onion salad. For dinner, the Taquilean people serve vegetable soup with bread.
The majority of the inhabitants of Taquile are Catholic. They adapted this religion, harmonizing Andean religion with the syncretic Christian culture. The mother earth (Pachamama), the principal Andean deity, directly controls harvesting and fertility; the island is home to four Apus, Andean mountaintop deities. People make several offerings to these deities each year, and they offer three coca leaves prior to each activity or trip. God is present throughout the year in the festivities. The two Catholic churches are in Centre and Huayllano; a Seventh-day Adventist church is located in Huayrapata.
Taquile has a radio station and is equipped with generators. Islanders have elected to use solar panels to generate energy.
Flowers and trees on the Island include Kolle, the tree used to roof the houses and for firewood, the Cantuta flower (the national flower of Peru), the Chukjo (used as detergent), and Muña, used as natural medicines. Coca leaves are not cultivated in Taquile

Day two of our exploration on Lake Titicaca, Peru!
By visiting three different Lake Titicaca islands - Uros Island, Amantani Island and Taquile Island - we have a good grasp of this iconic lake. Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world, with 12,500 feet elevation (3,810 metres) above sea level.
