Australian Steam Trains: R761 crosses Taradale Viaduct
Echuca is a boarder town of the states of Victoria and New South Wales, It was originally the terminus of the first cross country main line in Victorian Railways History linking the Port of Melbourne to the Warf at Echuca for the transport mainly of wool which had been transported down the Murray River. Over the Easter weekend in 2011 Steamrail Victoria ran a series of shuttles for the locals with steam locomotive R761 and diesel locomotive T356 from Echuca Station to the old station site at Barnes. Here is seen R761 and T356 departing Echuca bound for Melbourne on Easter Monday, Anzac Day. Seen here is R761 leading T356 as they cross the impressive Taradale Viaduct on the way back to Melbourne in beautiful afternoon sunlight. The Viaduct is on a grade and contains the 'Taradale Loop' over it. R761 had just been passed through by a DOWN Bendigo Vlocity.

Taradale Rail Viaduct- 13/6/16
After getting the Northern Weekender crossing the viaduct (see my other uploads for more on this tour) I went and had a bit of a closer look at the viaduct itself, which crosses the Back Creek. Originally constructed as a bluestone viaduct between 1858 and 1862 with wrought iron girders (the construction of which was supervised by Isombard Kingdom Brunel) and a wooden deck. The bridge would be strengthened in 1933-1934 by the addition of wrought iron supports, in order to allow longer and heavier trains to cross. Further info on the viaduct can be found at the links below. Also included are three shots of trains crossing the viaduct as seen from Lyell Street, train numbers 8023, 8034 and 8098, all of which are featured in the Northern Weekender video.

The Malmsbury Viaduct is a large brick and stone masonry arch bridge over the Coliban River at Malmsbury on the Bendigo Railway in Victoria Australia. It was erected as part of the Melbourne, Mount Alexander and Murray River Railway between 1858 and 1861, and was at the time the largest masonry arch railway bridge built in Victoria.
The bridge is over 100m long with five 18.3 metre spans, standing about 25 metres high.132,000 cubic feet of bluestone for the bridge was quarried at the east end of Malmsbury and carted to the site by horse and drays.

There are 4 similar box girder side-by-side each being 2400mm deep by 610mm wide of riveted construction and are continuous through the 5 spans.
The total length of the bridge is 198 metres. The spans are 3 by (39.6 m) in the centre and the end spans adjacent to the abutments are 37.6 m. The highest point above the valley floor is 36 metres. The girders are supported on roller bearings, made up of 13 x 31⁄2 inch wrought iron rollers between cast iron bearing plates on all supports except where they are fixed at Pier No.3.
