Exploring Stratford in Taranaki - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 52: Today we are heading into Stratford in Taranaki to explore the town that calls itself the Shakespeare Town of New Zealand!
Yesterday - Day 51 -
Tomorrow – Day 53 –
About this video:
Today we are continuing our trip around the Taranaki region of New Zealand by checking out the town of Stratford. Stratford is famous for being the Shakespeare town of New Zealand thanks to street names after various characters from Shakespeare, as well as the Stratford Glockenspiel that does a performance four times a day.
First thing we do when we arrive in Stratford in Taranaki is check out the famous Stratford Glockenspiel for ourselves. It does a performance of Romeo and Juliet every day at 10m, 1pm, 3pm and 7pm. You can find the Stratford Glockenspiel right in the centre of Stratford.
After that, we look around a few shops and art galleries then settle in cafe in Stratford called Cafe x.o.x which is super quirky and a great way to stay out of the rain.
Finally, we check in at the Stratford Holiday Park before making our way to some walks around the Patea River including a swing bridge.
So what do you think of Stratford in Taranaki? Let us know in the comments below!

Kings of Hāwera - Roadside Stories
Author Ronald Hugh Morrieson famously once commented that he hoped he wouldn't be discovered after his death - but, sadly, that was exactly what happened. Never popular in his home town of Hāwera - which was recognisably skewered in his novels - Morrieson gained a strong following after his death in 1972. Hāwera is also home to Kevin Wasley, a dedicated Elvis Presley fan who runs a museum celebrating 'The King' - and sometimes dresses as his hero.

Christchurch
Christchurch (/ˈkraɪstʃɜrtʃ/; Māori: Ōtautahi) is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, and the country's third-most populous urban area. It lies one third of the way down the South Island's east coast, just north of Banks Peninsula which itself, since 2006, lies within the formal limits of Christchurch. The population of Christchurch City at the 5 March 2013 census was 341,469.
The city was named by the Canterbury Association, which settled the surrounding province of Canterbury. The name of Christchurch was agreed on at the first meeting of the association on 27 March 1848. It was suggested by John Robert Godley, who had attended Christ Church, Oxford. Some early writers called the town Christ Church, but it was recorded as Christchurch in the minutes of the management committee of the association. Christchurch became a city by Royal Charter on 31 July 1856, making it officially the oldest established city in New Zealand.

Lake Tekapo - Natural wonder of New Zealand
The wonderful Lake Tekapo, New Zealand.
Lake Tekapo is the second-largest of three roughly parallel lakes running north–south along the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin in the South Island of New Zealand (the others are Lake Pukaki and Lake Ohau). It covers an area of 83 square kilometres (32 sq mi), and is at an altitude of 710 metres (2,330 ft) above sea level.
The lake is fed at its northern end by the braided Godley River, which has its source in the Southern Alps to the north.

A Volcano and a Christmas Village
015 - New Plymouth
Exploring the area on a budget:
Mount Taranaki: This is a pretty obvious one for New Plymouth but I can’t stress enough how impressive this volcano is. The size and stature of it across a relatively flat landscape is amazing. You can drive up to a number of different view points on the volcano or for those who have the correct equipment/go at the right time of year can climb to the summit. There are also a number of shorter walks that go from the different view points for those not looking to reach the summit.
Dawson Falls: From Dawson Falls Visitor Centre there is a short walk down to Dawson Falls. There are also awesome views of Mount Taranaki from the visitor centre.
Christmas Village: Probably not worth the drive out to the ‘Village’ however if you want to try and get in the Christmas spirit while in the Southern hemisphere it is a pretty good place to start!

Startup Taranaki Meetup - AGTRACT - 27.04.2016
The first Taranaki Startup Meetup on 27 April was a great success. The Meetup was attended by 34 people and we had Chris and James West from AgTract, talk about their first steps as a Startup and future plans. There was a great Q&A session after the lecture. Questions were thoughtful and interesting and the answers from the guys were honest and insightful. We think it was a great first Meetup but we are keen to include your ideas for topics of future Meetups.

STRATFORD - OKAHUKURA RAILWAY
stratford to okahukura railway is known as the SOL, is goes from the township of stratford in central taranaki and heads east inland going through some remote farmlands till it gets to okahukura, a small seattlement a few kilometers north of taumarunui on the north islands main trunk line.check out the article about finding the forgotten at taranakidailynews.co.nz , there is a lot of history with the railway running through this area and was somewhat the main backbone for transporting people, cattle & sheep + supplies to the remote area as road access was very poor in early days. you can see on tunnels #8-9 & 10 there all build about the 1927-29 erea. theres about 25 tunnels on this line over the distance of around 150 kilometers, however due to a derailment in november 2009 damaging about 8kms of track, it is still not sure if it will be reopened. its has been poorly mantained over the years and need alot of dollars and work put into it. being used for 1 return trip most weeknights and as a detour when maintance or derailments happen between Marton and Taumarunui. still yet to be decided about its future, there is a group that if it does close want to rip up the rails and turn it into a biking trail. what will be the outcome??? only time will tell at present. pictures are between stratford and just past tangarakau. when i have more time i will photo the whole line **** since i first put this vid on here the line has been mothballed by kiwirail for a couple of years, then they well try and decide what more to do, theres a steam train AB being restored in stratford and the group have been talking with kiwirail about possible future usage running passanger / tourist out to whangamomona and return, but theres still along time before the train is restored anyway****
